Crampons, an ice axe, a helmet, a harness and warm high-altitude boots do not have to be bought for the sake of one ascent. Socks, base layers, basic gloves, sunglasses and personal toiletries are better owned.

Start from the list for the exact programme

The set differs from route to route. The programme from the south specifies a 30-40 litre rucksack, while {link(NORTH, ‘the programme from the north’)} calls for 50-60 litres and adds further items. That is why the phrase “a full Elbrus kit” guarantees nothing until it has been checked against the page for the programme you have chosen.

Copy the list into a table and mark each item: have it, buy it, hire it, or check it. That is quicker and more reliable than assembling your kit from whatever reviews you happen to find. Send any models you do not recognise to the organiser in advance.

What is usually convenient to hire

Mountaineering boots, if a suitable pair is not needed regularly

Crampons, once compatibility with the boot has been checked

A classic ice axe of the required length

A helmet and a harness in the right size

A down jacket and a large rucksack for the particular route

A sleeping bag with the comfort rating the season needs

The list is not a promise of availability. Sizes and particular models are confirmed with the hire shop before the trip. If a key item is needed in an unusual size, booking on the last evening creates a risk you do not need.

What is more often worth buying

Base layers, socks, thin gloves, headwear and the other things that sit against the skin are easier to own. How they fit and how they work can be checked in training. Sunglasses and a head torch will also be useful after the trip, and should be thoroughly familiar to their owner.

Trekking poles, shell clothing and a summit rucksack are worth buying if you intend to keep going to the mountains. Buying before a first trip is justified only after a fitting and a check that the item works with the rest of the set.

Boots and crampons are checked together

A pair that is the right length can still pinch across the width or hold the heel too loosely. Boots are tried on with the socks that will be worn on the route, then walked on stairs and on a slope. Your toes should not press into the front on the descent.

Once the boots are chosen, the actual crampons are fitted to them. Check the front and the rear fastening, the straps and the absence of play. A salesperson’s word that the binding type is compatible is no substitute for physically fitting the pair.

How to check the equipment you are given

The helmet has no cracks, and the adjustment holds the size you set

The harness has no cuts, melted patches or damaged buckles

The crampons are not bent, the straps are intact, the anti-balling plates are fitted

The ice axe has no play in the head and no visible bend in the shaft

The zips on the clothing and on the sleeping bag run their full length

Every item issued and every return time is written into the order

Technical equipment with an unknown history must not be repaired by you with tape or wire. If in doubt, the item is replaced before you set off. The manufacturer’s markings and a sound general condition matter more than cosmetic newness.

When hiring stops being the cheaper option

If several similar trips lie ahead, hiring repeatedly can come close to the price of owning the item. But the sum is more than the payment: buying brings storage, transport, care and an understanding of service life. For a helmet, a harness and crampons the history of use matters.

Do not buy an expensive model out of a fear that hiring looks unprofessional. What counts on the summit is that the item works, that it is the right size and that you know how to use it, not who owns it.

How to write the hire request

In the request give the programme, the dates, your height, your weight, your usual shoe size and any peculiarities of fit you know about. For boots, foot length in millimetres and information about width are useful, but they do not remove the need for a fitting. For clothing, list the layers that will be worn under the hired item.

Ask for every item to be confirmed, not merely a general “set”. Note separately the crampons for the boots you have chosen, the comfort rating of the sleeping bag, the volume of the rucksack and the size of the harness. Keep the final list on your phone and on paper.

Return and liability

Before you collect anything, check the return time, what cleaning is acceptable and the terms if something is damaged. After the route, do not dry boots or clothing over an open flame or hard against a heater. Report any breakage honestly: the next participant should be given equipment that works. Photograph the set when you collect it and keep the paperwork until the account is finally settled.

Where to hire and when to book

Mountain Guide works with its own hire shop, Rock and Rent. The request is best drawn up once the programme is chosen and sent in advance, particularly if you need an unusual size. The full list can be checked against the Elbrus equipment list.

Related programmes

The cards below help you compare what the two sides of the mountain require before you write the hire request.

<ul
class="products grid grid-cols-1
