It begins at night or in the early morning, it takes place at altitude, and it only ends once everyone is safely back. The exact line, the start time and whether a snowcat is used depend on the programme and on the conditions.

Getting ready the evening before

You pack the rucksack, adjust the crampons, check the torch and lay out dry layers. Boots, mitts and water are not things to try for the first time in the morning. Tell someone how you are feeling before you set off, not after it gets worse.

The start

The first hours are spent in darkness and cold. Keep the pace even: a fast burst simply spends your strength. If a snowcat is part of the programme, it cuts out part of the route, but it does not replace acclimatisation and it is no guarantee of a ride back down.

Gaining height

The group moves over snow and ice in crampons. Wind and visibility change how hard it feels. Stops are kept short, and you put another layer on before you get properly cold.

Kosaya Polka and the saddle

These sections come at a considerable altitude, where the pace drops. Reaching the saddle is no guarantee of the west summit: there is still height to gain and there is still the time needed to get down. The guide assesses how each person is doing.

The summit

Time on the summit is limited. Photographs must not hold the group up in the cold or in worsening weather. The highest point is the middle of the route, not the end of the work.

The descent

Tiredness costs you coordination, the snow may have softened, and concentration slips. Crampons and spacing still matter. Nobody goes on ahead alone, and you say if you have pain, numbness or weakness.

Reasons to turn round

A control time, the weather, a slow pace, altitude symptoms and equipment failure are all sufficient reasons. The guide’s decision is binding. There is a fuller account in the article on turning back on Elbrus.

The particular schedule is published in the south route climbing programme. Compare the acclimatisation, the number of guides and the reserve day as well.

Food and water. Snacks are prepared in advance and stowed so that you can eat during a short stop. Water can freeze in the cold; how to carry it is something to discuss with the guide. Summit night is not the time to try a new energy product for the first time.

The mental side. Darkness and a slow pace make the route feel endless. Break the task down into the next few checkpoints, but do not lose sight of the overall time. Motivation helps you keep moving; the decision about safety stays a rational one.

After you get back. Get warm, eat, and say if any symptoms are still there. Alcohol is not a recovery method. Going over your kit and your pacing is better done after some sleep, writing down the conclusions for the next trip.

The snowcat. Where it drops you off, if the service is included, depends on the state of the slope. A cancellation must not leave the group without a contingency plan. You still have to be ready to walk both up and down, as the programme requires.

Photographs. Cameras and phones come out only at a safe spot. A glove taken off chills the hand quickly, and a stop holds people up. The guide may limit the time spent on the summit.

The outcome. Summit day is judged by a safe return and by good decisions. The highest point matters, but it does not justify hidden symptoms, a broken pace or descending on your own.

A personal checklist

Before you sleep, lay out your clothing in layers, along with the head torch, water, food, eye protection and spare gloves, so that you are not hunting for them in the dark. Check the batteries and the crampon adjustment with the guide. Do not use a new piece of equipment for the first time on summit day if you can try it earlier.

While you are moving, report symptoms straight away and answer questions honestly. Do not break away to keep your own pace, and do not change the order of the group without being told to. If the decision is made to turn round, the task becomes a safe descent; the argument about the summit waits until you are back.

After the day out, leave time for sleep and recovery before any long journey. Pain, breathlessness, loss of coordination or unusual weakness after the descent all need a specialist’s assessment. A summit photograph only finishes the story once the whole team is back somewhere safe.

Summit day on Elbrus is the longest and most demanding stage of the programme.
