The final budget consists of the ground programme, the international flight, visa and insurance costs, personal equipment, tips to the mountain team and any continuation of the trip. Two programmes at the same price can differ in the number of days on the mountain, the guiding arrangement, the accommodation and the range of services.

Mountain Guide publishes the price of every current programme on the pages for Lemosho, Machame and Marangu. This article contains no general prices that go out of date quickly. What it sets out is the mechanics of the budget, so that you know which lines to compare before you pay.

The short answer

Compare what is in the programme first, and the price second

A longer route usually means more days of the team’s work and more park fees

Flights, visa, insurance, tips and personal equipment are counted separately

A private group is costed on its make-up and on the Russian-speaking guiding arrangement chosen

A safari and Zanzibar must have a confirmed estimate of their own

The main ground programme

The price of a programme usually covers only the services listed explicitly under “Included”. On the current Mountain Guide routes that means the local mountain team, permits and national park fees, the ground transfers in the programme, food and accommodation on the mountain, and the nights in Moshi that are specified.

A Russian-speaking trek leader is included from the group size given on that particular product page. For a smaller group there is a private costing. The terms of one programme cannot be carried over to another simply because both lead to Uhuru Peak.

Before paying, ask for the list of services as a single table: meetings, nights, meals, permits, transfers, who accompanies the group, tents or huts. A line that is missing is not included by default.

Why the route affects the price

Lemosho spends seven days on the mountain, Machame six, and the basic Marangu five. Every extra day means work for the guides, the cook and the porters, food, camp service and park fees. Comparing the headline figure alone, without the duration, is therefore wrong.

A long programme does not buy a guarantee of the summit. It gives more time to gain height gradually and to watch how people are doing. A short one saves holiday days but makes the schedule tighter. The difference in cost has to be weighed against the difference in acclimatisation.

Route

Days on the mountain

Accommodation

Main trade-off

Lemosho

7

Tents

More time and a higher cost of service

Machame

6

Tents

A tighter schedule and fewer holiday days

Marangu

5

Huts

The fastest gain in height in its basic version

Group size and the Russian-speaking guide

Some costs are shared between the group: transport, certain elements of the organisation and the work of the accompanying team. A costing for two people is therefore different from a costing for six. You cannot take the unit cost of a large group and promise it to a single client.

On the standard programmes a Russian-speaking Mountain Guide trek leader is included with a group of four or more. On a private format they can accompany any group, but their flights, work and ground costs have to be in the costing.

For a corporate group it is not only the price per person that matters but the contract, payment by bank transfer, the accounting documents, the rules for substituting a participant, and additional guides where the team’s fitness varies.

Costs before the programme starts

The international ticket depends on the departure city, the season, the baggage and the fare. Mountain Guide does not include the airfare in the price of the climb. With separate tickets, allow a margin for the connection, because the next carrier may not be liable for a delay by the previous one.

The visa depends on your nationality. Insurance must cover high-altitude trekking to 5895m and evacuation. A policy being described as travel insurance does not in itself mean that altitude and mountain activity are actually covered.

Equipment can be bought or hired in part, but only once the list is confirmed. Economising on waterproofs, a sleeping bag, boots and a head torch usually causes problems on the route, and unnecessary purchases happen when the list has not been checked in advance.

Personal costs on the mountain

Tips to the mountain team are paid separately. The guideline amounts and the rules for dividing them are published in the article on tipping on Kilimanjaro. That sum has to go into the budget before you fly, not be discovered after the descent.

Single occupancy, hire of personal equipment, drinks and food outside the included menu, communications, souvenirs and medical costs are all personal. The exact list depends on the particular programme.

A reserve for changes

A trip to altitude can change because of health, weather, flights or an official decision. An extra night, a new ticket, a separate transfer or an early descent may not be in the original price. How large a financial reserve to hold is decided by each person after reading the terms of the contract.

Cancellation and curtailment insurance needs checking separately from the medical policy. Even good medical cover does not necessarily refund the cost of a missed safari or a new airline ticket.

Safari and Zanzibar

A safari after Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar are separate parts of the trip. They may involve different hotels, transport, domestic flights, meals and conservation fees. The sum is confirmed once availability has been checked.

If an add-on is offered as one lump figure, ask for it to be broken down by service. That helps you understand what happens if the date you come off the mountain, or the international flight, changes.

How to compare offers

Break the offers down into line items rather than marketing descriptions. Compare the same dates, the same group and the same duration.

A checking procedure:

Fix the route and the number of days on the mountain

Compare who accompanies the group and whether a Russian-speaking guide is included

Check the hotel, the nights, the meals, the permits and the transfers

Write down the flight, visa, insurance, tips and equipment separately

Add a reserve for changes

Only then compare the totals

Three estimates instead of one figure

It is more practical to split the trip budget into three parts. The first is the confirmed Kilimanjaro programme: the mountain team’s work, the park fees, the food, the overnight stops and the transfers, in the form set out on the route page. The second is personal costs before and after the mountain: the flight, the visa, insurance, equipment, tips and food outside the programme. The third is a financial reserve for changing tickets, an extra night and other costs that can arise from a delayed flight or a change in your own plans.

That split stops you spending the reserve by accident on a better hotel or an excursion. The money for the unexpected has to stay available until you are home. The size of the reserve depends on the airline fare, the insurance terms, the season and the rest of the trip, so naming a universal figure without knowing a particular traveller’s details would be wrong.

For a family, a corporate or a small closed team, ask separately for a costing for a private Kilimanjaro climb. It sets down the make-up of the group, the chosen route, the dates, the guiding arrangement and every additional service. A private costing cannot be compared with a place in a scheduled group on the bottom line alone: they are different products in their organisation and in the attention people get.

Red flags in an offer that is too cheap

A low price does not on its own prove there is a problem, but it does call for a closer look. Ask how many days are actually spent on the mountain, which permits and fees are included, who meets you, where the services begin and end, what accommodation is provided and who pays if the programme changes. Pay particular attention to the words “all inclusive” without a detailed list.

The offer does not state the exact number of days on the route

Park fees and permits are pushed into vague supplements

The mountain team’s work and the Russian-speaking arrangement are not described

There is no clear division between group and personal equipment

Insurance is called included, but the risks and the altitude are not stated

The price of a safari or Zanzibar is given with no route and no list of services

A convenient place to start comparing is the page listing all the Kilimanjaro routes. Open the programmes you are considering side by side and check the duration, the overnight stops, the rate of acclimatisation and the “Included” and “Not included” sections. Only then does the final price mean anything.

Budget the whole trip, not the tour.

It helps to split the budget into three parts. The first is the trip you cannot avoid: the chosen programme, the international flight, the visa and insurance. The second is personal readiness: clothing, boots, sleeping bag, first-aid kit, hire of anything you are missing, and tips. The third is the continuation: safari, Zanzibar, extra nights and domestic flights. That division shows where the real saving is, and where a cost simply has not been counted yet.

If you are comparing two offers, write out the matching lines first. How many days are spent on the mountain, where people sleep, who meets you at the airport, how many hotel nights are included, who leads the group, which fees are paid, what is provided at camp and what you bring yourself. Only then compare the totals. Otherwise the cheaper offer may simply be the less complete one.

Duration has a cost of its own.

An extra day on Kilimanjaro means another day of park charges, food, work by the guides, the cook and the porters, use of the camp equipment and expedition logistics. A long Lemosho or the Northern Circuit therefore cannot be compared with a short option on the price of the trip alone. What you are buying is not a spare night for comfort but a more spread-out altitude profile and extra time inside the programme.

Shortening the route reduces some of the costs, but it does not shorten the summit’s 5895m. The international ticket, the visa, insurance, preparation and a large part of the ground logistics all stay the same. Saving one mountain day may turn out to be small against the trip as a whole and much too expensive in acclimatisation terms. That is exactly why Mountain Guide presents the short programmes as a deliberate choice for well-prepared people, and not as a general way of making Kilimanjaro cheaper.

Price per person and the price of a private group are different models.

In a scheduled group the shared costs are divided between the participants. On a private programme the vehicle, the dedicated team, the Russian-speaking guide and part of the organisational cost are calculated for that particular group. The price per person in a pair and in a group of six can therefore differ noticeably even on the same route. For an honest costing, a manager needs the dates, the group, the route you want, the guiding arrangement and your accommodation requirements.

A Russian-speaking Mountain Guide leader is not a decorative extra. Their flights, accommodation, food, park entry and work all have to appear in the estimate. If a Russian-speaking guide is provided only at a certain scheduled-group size, the programme must say so plainly. For a private climb their participation is costed separately. The phrase “Russian-speaking support” with no description of the terms makes offers impossible to compare.

The costs most often left out of the first figure.

The international flight and any separate domestic segment

The visa and the documents connected with the flight routing

Insurance with a permitted altitude of at least 5895m and suitable evacuation terms

Personal equipment, and hiring or buying whatever you are missing

Tips to the local mountain team, where they are not included

Single occupancy and extra hotel nights

Food and drink outside the period the programme explicitly covers

Costs arising from changed flights, illness or leaving the route early

Safari, Zanzibar and extra excursions

This list does not replace the “Included” and “Not included” sections of a particular tour. It is there as a check. If a line is not described, ask about it before paying rather than assuming it is included. The hotels before and after the mountain, the airport transfers, drinking water, the porter’s baggage allowance and single occupancy all matter particularly.

Currency, method of payment and reserve.

Ground costs in Tanzania are set in foreign currency, so the rouble equivalent can change. Compare an offer in the currency it is fixed in, taking bank charges and conversion rules into account separately. The payment schedule affects the risk too: check the deposit, the date of the final payment and the consequences of cancelling or postponing.

An organisational reserve is not the same as optional entertainment. It is there for an extra night, a change to a domestic flight, food outside the programme or replacing something that has been damaged. Its size depends on the flight routing and on the rest of the trip. Mountain Guide does not substitute an invented universal figure for that line: you are given a list of scenarios, and you then choose a sensible margin.

Checks before paying a deposit.

Before paying you should have the name of the route, the exact dates, the length of the mountain part, the make-up of the group, the guiding arrangement, the list of included and excluded services, the baggage rules, the hotels, the single-occupancy policy and the cancellation terms. If a safari or Zanzibar has been added, they need a separate programme with their own flights, transfers, accommodation and rules for changes.

The last check is to set the written offer against the tour page. If the duration, the hotel nights or the participation of a Russian-speaking guide differ between the email and the website, get written confirmation of which version applies. That is how a budget turns from a marketing figure into a plan you can manage.

Single occupancy and personal requests.

A single room in town and a tent to yourself on the mountain are two different services. Availability and the supplement are confirmed separately. On Marangu the accommodation is in huts, so the hotel logic of a single room does not apply. If sleeping alone matters to you, discuss it before booking the route, not after you arrive.

Dietary restrictions, extra baggage, equipment hire and an early arrival can all change the costing too. Mentioning a preference does not mean it has been included. The final offer has to show what the operator has actually confirmed and what remains a personal cost.

Why price per day is the wrong comparison.

Dividing the total by the number of days creates a false precision. One day may include a hotel and a transfer, another a full camp and a large mountain team, a third only a drive. What matters more is how much time you get for acclimatisation and which services support each stage. The lowest price per day is no indicator of safety or quality.

A final estimate counts as agreed only once it is confirmed in writing. Verbal promises, correspondence without the exact programme name and old price lists should not be used as grounds for payment.

The final formula for choosing.

Decide on the route and on a sufficient number of mountain days first. Then choose between a scheduled and a private format, check the Russian-speaking guide arrangement, and only after that add the standard of accommodation, the safari and the island. That order protects the central element of the trip — its altitude logic. Start from the lowest price and you risk buying a different product from the one you had in mind.

Frequently asked questions

Below are short answers to common questions about what a Kilimanjaro climb costs. They add to the discussion above but do not replace checking the conditions of a particular departure.

Why is there no single average price on the page

An average price goes out of date quickly and hides the differences between routes. The current price is on the page of each active tour, and a private programme is costed for the group.

Is the cheapest route always the best value

No. A shorter programme can save money and holiday time, but give less time to acclimatise. Value is judged together with the risk and with what is included.

Can you skip the tips

Read the rules and the guideline amounts before you travel. On the current programmes, tips to the mountain team are listed as a separate mandatory cost.

Is a safari included in the price of the climb

No, unless the programme you have chosen says so explicitly. A safari and Zanzibar are confirmed by a separate costing.

How do I get a costing for 2-6 people

Send us the group, the route, the month, your experience and whether you need a Russian-speaking guide. We will get the unit cost for each group size and come back with a transparent estimate.

The next step

Choose the route first, on the Kilimanjaro page, then ask for a costing for your group.
