It does not replace a base layer, fleece and a waterproof outer layer; it adds warmth at stops, before the start and while you are moving slowly at altitude. The current list for the nine-day ascent from the south specifies a thick, warm jacket with a hood. Leaving it at home simply because it is warm down in the valley is not an option.

Why it is colder up high than the forecast suggests

Summit day usually starts at night. Temperature, wind and walking speed all change as you gain height, and you yourself move more slowly than you would lower down. When you stop, your body produces less heat, while the inner layer you have soaked on the way up carries on cooling you. That is why the daytime temperature in Terskol, or a single weather icon, is not something to plan around.

A down jacket earns its place at the moments when movement slows: while the group gathers at the hut, while you are waiting for the others, on a short break, and after a decision to turn back. It has to be reachable in your rucksack, not sitting in luggage left down in the valley.

How a down jacket fits into a layering system

A working clothing system is not built around the single warmest item you own. The base layer moves moisture away from the skin, fleece adds moderate insulation, the down jacket holds heat in, and a waterproof shell keeps out wind and precipitation. Depending on the weather, your guide will ask you to take a layer off, add one or swap them round. Put everything on at once while you are still indoors and you can easily be sweating before you leave.

A ski jacket sometimes covers part of the job, but it does not always replace a separate down jacket and an outer shell. That depends on the insulation, the cut, the ventilation and what will fit underneath. There is a separate discussion in the article on ski clothing for Elbrus.

What to check when choosing

What matters on Elbrus is not the wording on the label but how the jacket works as part of the full set. Before you travel, check that:

The hood goes over your head with a hat on and does not restrict your view

A base layer and fleece fit underneath without being squashed

The sleeves do not leave your wrists bare when you are using poles

The zip and pockets can be worked in thick gloves

The jacket has not become tight once a harness is on over it

Packed down, the jacket fits into a summit pack

Clothing that is too tight compresses the insulation and gets in the way of movement. Clothing that is too loose creates dead space, lets the wind in and snags on equipment. Try the down jacket on over the layers you are actually going to take up the mountain.

Why weight alone is a poor way to choose

The equipment list for the nine-day programme from the south gives a working benchmark: a suitable thick down jacket usually weighs from about 700 grams. That is neither a universal standard nor a guarantee of warmth. Two jackets of the same weight can differ in the quality and quantity of insulation, in fabric, length, hood and fit.

A light expedition model may turn out to be warmer than a heavy town coat. The reverse happens too. So look first at what the model is designed for and at your full set of clothing, and only then at weight and packed size. If you are in any doubt, send the organiser photographs and the exact model name.

Buy or hire

Buying makes sense if you go to cold mountains regularly and know what fit suits you. For a single trip it is worth considering hire. At Rock and Rent the set is chosen for conditions on Elbrus, but the size and availability need booking in advance. Once there, you should still try the jacket on together with the rest of your clothing.

Do not set out on summit day in something new that you have never worn as part of the full set. Go for a training walk: check the hood, the zips, how freely your arms move and how the jacket packs into your rucksack. The general list of what to bring is collected in the Elbrus equipment list.

Down or synthetic insulation

Down holds heat well for its weight and packs down small, but it has to be kept dry. Synthetic insulation is usually heavier for a comparable loft, but copes better with damp. In conversation the Russian word for a down jacket often gets used for any bulky warm coat, so what matters is not the category name but what the model is actually designed for.

It is more useful for the organiser to have a link to the product and a photograph of the label than the answer “I’ve got a winter coat”. If the insulation has already gone flat, the fabric lets the wind through or the zip is temperamental, the rated warmth of a new model tells you nothing about the state of yours.

How to look after the jacket during the programme

In your rucksack, protect the down jacket from water with its own bag or a waterproof liner. After a day out, dry it fully, but do not put it right up against an open heater. A wet jacket should not spend the night tightly compressed in its stuff sack.

In the morning, check the pockets, the zip and the hood before the start. A small fault that goes unnoticed at the hotel becomes a serious one when the jacket has to go on quickly in the wind. Pack it in your summit pack so that you can get at it without unloading everything.

Related programmes

Clothing requirements depend on the season and on the exact route. The cards below lead to two programmes from the south; before booking, check the list on the page you have actually chosen.

<ul
class="products grid
