The highest mountain in Russia is Elbrus. Its west summit stands 5642 metres above sea level and its east summit 5621 metres. Both summits lie inside the Russian Federation, in the Greater Caucasus, so Elbrus’s place at the top of the national ranking does not depend on how the Europe-Asia boundary is drawn.<\/p>\n

Which mountain is the highest in Russia<\/h2>\n

First place goes to the west summit of Elbrus, at 5642 metres. The Russian Geographical Society<\/a> puts Dykhtau second, at about 5200 metres. The gap between the two is roughly 442 metres. Most of the highest Russian peaks are in the Caucasus, but none of them reaches the height of Elbrus.<\/p>\n

Why two heights are given for Elbrus<\/h2>\n

Elbrus is a twin-summited massif. The west summit is the higher one, which is why 5642 metres is the figure used when answering the question about the highest point in the country. The east summit stands 5621 metres. They are separated by the saddle, for which the Russian Geographical Society<\/a> gives a height of 5325 metres.<\/p>\n

Both summits are proper mountaineering objectives in their own right. Reaching the east summit does not mean reaching the highest point in Russia, even though the difference in height looks small. Always check which summit a route description actually names.<\/p>\n

Where Elbrus is<\/h2>\n

The massif lies in the Greater Caucasus, on the border between Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia. The coordinates and the figure of 5642 metres are given by the Smithsonian Institution’s Global Volcanism Program<\/a>. The tourist infrastructure of the classic south route is tied to the Baksan valley, Terskol and the Azau meadow.<\/p>\n

Is Elbrus a mountain or a volcano<\/h2>\n

Elbrus is both a mountain and a volcanic massif. The Smithsonian Institution classifies it as a complex stratovolcano. The west and east summits have cones of their own, and traces of volcanic processes survive on the slopes. The database dates the last confirmed eruptive phase to approximately AD 50, with an error of about 50 years.<\/p>\n

Calling it a volcano describes the origin and structure of the massif, not its day-to-day activity. It does not change the main practical risks for an ordinary expedition: altitude, weather, glaciated ground and long hours of effort.<\/p>\n

Is Elbrus the highest mountain in Europe<\/h2>\n

The answer depends on where the line between Europe and Asia is drawn. If the boundary follows the Main Caucasus ridge or runs south of it, Elbrus is placed in Europe and counted as its highest peak. That same qualification is used by the Russian Geographical Society<\/a>. Under a different geographical model, the highest point in Europe is said to be Mont Blanc.<\/p>\n

For the question about Russia, that debate does not matter: Elbrus is in Russia and remains the highest point in the country under either scheme.<\/p>\n

Why 5642 metres matters if you are climbing<\/h2>\n

Altitude affects more than the record books; it affects your physiology. Pressure and the available oxygen both fall, and the body needs time to acclimatise. The CDC Yellow Book<\/a> states that being fit does not in itself prevent altitude sickness. If symptoms appear you must not keep gaining height; if things get worse at the same altitude, you have to descend.<\/p>\n

That is why a short programme does not become safer simply because the infrastructure is good. The cable car and the snowcat cut out part of the walk, but they can also move you to a much greater altitude very quickly. The schedule of overnight stops and acclimatisation days out matters more than any promise of a quick ascent.<\/p>\n

Which summit do people climb more often<\/h2>\n

The classic programmes from the south are usually aimed at the west summit, at 5642 metres. The east summit can be an objective in its own right on other programmes. Routes from the north, and traverses, differ in logistics, in how self-supported they are and in the experience they demand. Choose not only by the side of the mountain but by the length, the acclimatisation, the number of guides and what the price includes.<\/p>\n

The short answer<\/h2>\n

The highest mountain in Russia is Elbrus, at 5642 metres.<\/strong> That is the height of the west summit. The east summit reaches 5621 metres. Elbrus stands in the Greater Caucasus and is a glaciated stratovolcano.<\/p>\n

What is the height measured from?<\/strong> The figure of 5642 metres is the height above sea level, not the ascent from the start of the walk. How much height you actually gain depends on the side of the mountain, on the transport and on the height of your overnight stops.<\/p>\n

Can the east summit count as the highest point in Russia?<\/strong> No. It is a separate summit of the massif, but it is 21 metres lower than the west summit.<\/p>\n

Why do different sources disagree?<\/strong> Sometimes the heights of the two summits get mixed up, sometimes the figure is rounded, and sometimes different geographical classifications of Europe are used. For Russia the base figure stays the same: 5642 metres for the west summit.<\/p>\n
