The gorges of the Elbrus region let you see the Caucasus without climbing a summit: mountain rivers, pine forest, alpine meadows, glaciers and the side valleys off the Baksan gorge. The walks vary enormously in length and height gain. Some suit a short stroll; others lead to mountaineering camps and take a full day on foot.<\/p>\n

The Baksan gorge<\/h2>\n

This is the main transport axis of the region. The road to Terskol, Cheget and Azau runs along it, and the side gorges branch off from it. Baksan works well as the base for a trip: you stay in one place and pick each outing according to the weather and your level of fitness.<\/p>\n

Adyl-Su<\/h2>\n

This gorge is known for its mountaineering camps and for the views of the glaciated peaks. The road and the paths lead deeper into high mountain terrain, so decide on the format in advance: a scenic walk in the lower part and a push up to the high-mountain features are two different undertakings. Do not step onto a glacier without the relevant experience and equipment.<\/p>\n

Adyr-Su<\/h2>\n

The Adyr-Su valley is associated with climbing routes and camps. Getting in has its own quirks, and the state of the road and the access rules can change. Before you travel, check with official local sources on the operation of the vehicle lift, any restrictions and whether you can drive in at all.<\/p>\n

Irik and Irikchat<\/h2>\n

This route starts near the village of Elbrus and climbs steadily up a side valley. A short outing along the lower section and a push into the high-mountain terrain cannot be treated as the same level of difficulty. The long version calls for navigation, time in hand and an understanding of the state of the passes.<\/p>\n

Terskol and the walks nearby<\/h2>\n

Popular outings to waterfalls and viewpoints start from Terskol. The village being close by does not cancel out the height gain, the wet rock or the sudden changes in weather. Even on well-used paths you need boots with good grip, water, a waterproof and the discipline to turn back before dark.<\/p>\n
