Among all the peaks in the world, though, Everest holds a special place — the highest point on the planet, and one that thousands of climbers dream of standing on. So what does it mean to reach Everest? For most people in the world an Everest expedition is out of reach, both physically and financially, yet admiring the summit of Everest from base camp, where climbers begin their route, is an entirely achievable dream.

The history of climbing Everest

Everest was first reached — or rather, first climbed to the summit — in 1953, when Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay made their historic ascent. Their achievement opened the way for many others, and ever since, the routes to the top have stood as a symbol not only of conquest but of respect for the mountain environment. For most climbers, reaching Everest means becoming part of that legend.

How the journey begins

Reaching Everest is impossible without thorough preparation. The essential stages are physical training, acclimatisation and sound route planning. Most expeditions start from Lukla, a small settlement in Nepal at roughly 2840 m above sea level. Trekkers fly in on a small aircraft from Kathmandu, the Nepalese capital. Lukla’s distinguishing feature is Tenzing-Hillary Airport, considered one of the most demanding in the world to land at and take off from because of its extremely short runway.

Routes to the mountain

Because Everest sits on the border between Tibet and Nepal and can be seen from both countries, there are two main routes that let you reach it: from Nepal and from Tibet. The Nepalese side offers the better trekking experience on the way to Everest Base Camp — comfortable lodges, authentic villages, the hospitality of local people, rice terraces and, of course, spectacular mountain views that surround you for the best part of two weeks. The Tibetan side, by contrast, allows you to drive to Everest Base Camp in a few hours, but offers a less impressive view of the famous eight-thousander.

Acclimatisation is the key to success

Acclimatisation plays a decisive part in the Everest trek. Without it, reaching Everest is simply not possible, because the body has to adapt to the lack of oxygen. Trekkers spend several days at intermediate altitudes, making day walks to higher points and gaining height gradually. This approach reduces the risk of altitude sickness and allows you to carry on safely and with genuine enjoyment.

The role of the Sherpas

The Sherpas — the indigenous people of Nepal’s mountain districts — are central to the success not only of ascents but of treks in the Himalaya as well. Their experience and knowledge of the routes make trekking safer, and their remarkable stamina allows them to work as high-altitude porters. Many climbers admit that without the Sherpas‘ help, reaching Everest would be impossible, given how much clothing for every kind of weather each person has to carry. They help carry equipment, set up camps on ascents and keep the group safe.

Difficulties and dangers

Reaching Everest comes with a number of challenges, and the most common one trekkers meet on the way to Everest is altitude, or mountain, sickness. It is caused by ascending to high altitude too quickly without proper acclimatisation. The usual symptoms are headache, nausea, fatigue and dizziness. Altitude sickness can be prevented, however, and experienced climbers recommend gaining height gradually, taking acclimatisation days, staying well hydrated and, where necessary, using medication (acetazolamide, for example). You can read more here about medication for altitude sickness.

Kit and equipment

Preparation includes choosing good-quality equipment. To reach Everest you need specialised mountaineering boots, protective clothing, oxygen cylinders and dependable gear. Well-chosen equipment considerably improves your chances of a trouble-free trek or ascent. For every trekking or climbing programme in Nepal our guides put together a careful kit list — for the Everest trek, for instance, or the trek to Everest and the Gokyo lakes.

The single most important item is a suitable pair of trekking boots, since participants cover around 150 km over two weeks, and this is one area where compromises really are unacceptable. We have written in more detail about how to choose trekking boots.

Motivation and mental resilience

Motivation is one of the main factors in success. Many people dream of reaching Everest to prove their strength to themselves and to the world. On the way to base camp, though, moments of doubt and fatigue are inevitable. Mental preparation matters just as much as physical training. The support of the team, the right frame of mind and the ability to cope with stress all play a key part.

The nature and culture of the region

The road to Everest runs through the scenic landscapes of the Himalaya. Along the way trekkers cross valleys, forests and glaciers, and get to know the distinctive culture of the local people. Temples, monasteries and rituals add depth to the journey. For many, reaching Everest means touching not only the natural world but the region’s rich spiritual heritage.

The lessons Everest teaches

For anyone who decides to reach Everest, it is not just an adventure but a real lesson in life. Going into the mountains teaches patience, mutual support and respect for the forces of nature. Every step towards the summit becomes a step towards understanding yourself. Many climbers say they come back from this mountain changed — more aware, stronger and more grateful for every moment of life.

Closing thoughts

Reaching Everest is a challenge only the best prepared and most determined can take on. This trek demands not only physical effort but deep inner work. For those willing to take the risk, though, the reward is not just the mountain scenery but the sense of having overcome their own fears. Everest goes on inspiring and drawing in everyone who dreams of testing themselves and reaching Everest, becoming part of its story.

Turning the dream into a concrete plan is easier with our guide to trekking to Everest, which compares the routes, the altitudes and the fitness they require. Read the main article on the subject.

Mountains have always drawn people in, beckoning with their majestic beauty and their harsh inaccessibility.
