No overview replaces the list on the page of the tour you have chosen, but the underlying logic is the same everywhere: stay warm, keep the wind and the sun off, move confidently on snow, and have a set that works for a night start.<\/p>\n<h2>Dressing in layers<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A base layer that moves moisture away from the skin.<\/li>\n<li>An insulating fleece or something equivalent.<\/li>\n<li>A waterproof, breathable jacket and overtrousers against wind and precipitation.<\/li>\n<li>A warm jacket for stops and for the summit day.<\/li>\n<li>Thin gloves, plus separate warm mitts.<\/li>\n<li>A hat, a balaclava or a neck gaiter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Try the layers on together. The jacket must not get in the way of the harness or the rucksack, and the trousers must not shorten your stride in crampons. Cotton is a poor choice for a base layer: once wet, it takes a long time to dry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boots and crampons<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mountaineering boots are chosen for the season and for what the programme requires. Try them on with the socks you will actually wear, and test them on an ascent and on a long descent. Your toes should not press against the end, and your heel should not move freely. Fit the actual crampons to the actual boots before you set off; the binding type on its own is no guarantee of compatibility.<\/p>\n<h2>Technical kit<\/h2>\n<p>The list may include crampons, a classic ice axe, a helmet, a harness and karabiners. What you need and how it is used is decided by the route and the guide. It is worth reading in advance about <a href=\"https:\/\/mountainguides.pro\/2026\/08\/04\/ice-axe-for-elbrus\/\">why an ice axe matters<\/a>, but the skill itself cannot be picked up from an article.<\/p>\n<h2>Your personal set<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A head torch, with spare batteries for it.<\/li>\n<li>Sunglasses and ski goggles.<\/li>\n<li>Trekking poles, if they are listed.<\/li>\n<li>A vacuum flask and a water bottle.<\/li>\n<li>A rucksack of the right size, with the contents kept dry.<\/li>\n<li>A personal first-aid kit and toiletries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Rucksack sizes differ from programme to programme. Do not buy one on the strength of a universal figure from the internet; check against the tour page and against how much you will actually be carrying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Buy or hire<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For specialist items you will use on one trip it is often sensible to hire, while underwear, socks, sunglasses and gloves are better owned. Hiring does not remove the need to try things on and look them over. Check the straps and the buckles, look for cracks and for play, and make sure the set is complete when you collect it.<\/p>\n<h2>The final check<\/h2>\n<p>A week beforehand, lay everything out against the list, photograph the set and note what is missing. Boots, crampons, torch and gloves are checked in use, not on paper. Check how they sit together with a balaclava and a hood. Sun cream goes on exposed skin before you start and is reapplied as the manufacturer directs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to pack the set<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anything you will need on the first day should not go deep into the hold luggage. Keep the key personal items, your documents and a minimum of warm clothing within reach. In the rucksack, clothing and electronics are protected from damp in separate bags, and crampons travel in a cover.<\/p>\n<p>Draw up two lists: all the luggage, and the day set. Note the hired items separately, along with the date they are due back. Do not dry boots or waterproofs over a naked flame or hard against a heater.<\/p>\n<h2>What a universal list will not tell you<\/h2>\n<p>The exact temperature rating of a sleeping bag, the size of the large rucksack, the rope equipment and the way personal food is handled all depend on the programme. If a list from the internet contradicts the tour page, ask the organiser and get confirmation before you travel. You must not drop an item you do not understand on your own initiative.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do not go by the brand alone.<\/strong> A well-known maker does not make up for the wrong size, for incompatibility or for wear. With technical kit what counts is what it is for, what condition it is in and whether you can use it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>After the trip.<\/strong> Dry the set as instructed, note any damage and return the hired items on time.
