In the Mountain Guide programme that sequence takes in Ajusco at 3900 m, Nevado de Toluca at 4680 m, a night at the Iztaccihuatl huts at 4000 m, a climb to 5230 m and the descent to Tlachichuca before Orizaba.

Why one acclimatisation peak may not be enough

Short programmes often use a single summit before Orizaba. For someone who arrives already acclimatised that can work, but it is not the equivalent of a gradual nine-day scheme. The body’s response shows up not only in the highest point reached in a day but in sleep, appetite, recovery and the ability to work again the following day.

Several stages give you more to go on. That is not a mathematical guarantee of success; it is a way of seeing a problem sooner.

Day 1 — Mexico City, 2300 m

The first night is already at altitude but asks for no mountain effort. This stage lets adaptation begin after the flight. Do not turn the first evening into a training session or a contest of impressions: sleep, water and a quiet routine are worth more than extra fatigue.

Day 2 — Ajusco, 3900 m

The first outing raises the day’s high point to 3900 m, with a return to sleep in Mexico City at 2300 m. This is where pace, drinking, clothing and the first individual reactions are tested. Ajusco is not a warm-up to be got through as fast as possible.

The part played by Ajusco and by the next summit is examined in more detail in the article on the first acclimatisation outings.

Day 3 — Nevado de Toluca, 4680 m

The second outing brings you close to the 5000 m mark. After it the programme drops lower again, to sleep in Cholula. That sequence gives a higher daytime stimulus without an immediate night high up.

If pronounced symptoms appear at 4680 m, they cannot be put down to tiredness alone and hidden. It is precisely at the intermediate stages that there is a chance to change the pace and reconsider the plan.

Day 4 — a night at Iztaccihuatl, 4000 m

Sleeping altitude changes the demand. The body has to recover and sleep at 4000 m, not merely go up there briefly. Sleep quality, headache, appetite and how you feel in the morning all matter for the decision to go to 5230 m.

Day 5 — Iztaccihuatl, 5230 m

Iztaccihuatl is the main altitude test in the programme before Orizaba. A participant goes above 5000 m, and after the descent transfers to Tlachichuca at 2900 m. There is a separate article about what this summit is for, “Iztaccihuatl in the Mexican volcanoes programme”.

The point of the day is not to prove your readiness at any cost but to gain altitude experience and keep something in reserve. Spending too much on an intermediate summit can spoil the stage that follows.

Day 6 — recovery and the Orizaba base, 4200 m

After the night at 2900 m the programme allows a day for rest and for the move up to the Orizaba base camp at 4200 m. Here recovery after Iztaccihuatl is assessed, equipment is prepared and the decision about the final push is taken.

Rest does not mean doing nothing until the last minute. Eat calmly, drink, lay out your layers, your head torch, your water and your technical kit, and then go to bed as early as the plan allows.

Which symptoms must not be hidden

A severe or worsening headache, marked nausea, loss of coordination, unusual breathlessness at rest, confusion and a sharp drop in capacity all have to be reported to the guide at once. An article on the internet does not make a diagnosis and does not replace medical care.

Sound high-altitude tactics include a readiness to stop or to go down. The summit plan always comes second to the state of the person.

Daytime altitude and sleeping altitude

When you look through a programme it helps to keep two columns. The first is the day’s highest point, the second is where you sleep. An outing to 4680 m followed by a descent to Cholula and a night at Iztaccihuatl at 4000 m have different effects. That is why the advertising line “we were almost at 5000” says nothing about the quality of the acclimatisation.

In the nine-day scheme the daytime altitude rises in steps, while the nights alternate between gain and recovery. After Iztaccihuatl the programme deliberately drops to 2900 m before moving up to the Orizaba base camp.

Can you arrive already acclimatised

Recent time at altitude can help, but how much depends on the highest point reached, the sleeping altitude, how long you stayed and how long ago you came down. “I was in the mountains a month ago” is not enough to change a programme. You need to give the specific dates and altitudes.

Even with fresh acclimatisation there is still the flight, the change of routine, new conditions and several climbs in a row. Speeding the programme up on your own initiative, on the spot, is not an option.

Pace, water and food

On acclimatisation outings the aim is steady movement, not a record. Bursts of speed add fatigue and make your condition harder to judge. Water and food are spread across the whole day, rather than waiting for real thirst or a complete loss of energy. No universal ration can be set without taking account of the person, the weather and the effort.

It is worth choosing in advance the food a participant can actually eat in the cold and at altitude. Finish any experiments with new sports nutrition before the trip.

A daily record of how you feel

A short note in the morning and the evening helps you see the trend: sleep, appetite, headache, nausea, unusual weakness and capacity for work. This is not self-diagnosis; it is a way of telling the guide more precisely what has changed.

Feeling unwell must not be hidden, but nor should a single symptom be interpreted from an article. The decision is taken on the whole picture and on a professional assessment.

What to ask the organiser

What sleeping altitude is planned for each day

How the programme changes if one of the volcanoes closes

Where the recovery after Iztaccihuatl takes place

How the reserve day is used

What insurance is required for an altitude of 5636 m

Which symptoms have to be reported immediately

What to do next

Check the full nine-day programme, prepare your equipment and tell the guide the highest point you have reached and slept at on previous trips.
