The shorter programme climbs the northern valley to Pangpema and returns the same way. The full route carries on beyond the north base camp, crosses a series of passes and continues to the south side of the massif. Calling both of them simply «the base camp trek» is not enough: they differ in length, in the tiredness they leave you with and in what you come away having seen.

Kanchenjunga stands on the border between Nepal and India and is the third-highest mountain in the world. The Nepali programmes cross a remote conservation area with simpler infrastructure than the Everest and Annapurna regions. What matters here is not only altitude and fitness, but your readiness for long road journeys, unreliable communications and basic accommodation.

The two routes to Kanchenjunga in Nepal

Criterion

Shorter programme

Full route

Main objective

Pangpema, the north base camp

Pangpema, the passes and the southern valley

Highest confirmed objective

Pangpema, 5388 m

Pangpema, 5388 m

After the north camp

Return down the northern valley

On to Cheram, Ramche and the Yalung glacier

Nature of the effort

Altitude and a long descent back

Altitude, passes and more accumulated fatigue

Who it suits

Those who want Pangpema and have fewer days

Those who want to see the massif from both sides

Both versions use the same northern line as far as Pangpema. The difference begins after the visit to base camp, so choose your programme on the second half of the route rather than on first days that look alike.

The short trek to the north base camp

The short Kanchenjunga programme goes through Amjilosa, Gyabla, Ghunsa and Kambachen. After acclimatising, the group climbs to Lhonak at 4800 m and then to Pangpema, 5388 m. The night at the north base camp is spent in a simple shelter with minimal comfort.

From Pangpema the group returns down the northern valley. The programme does not include the crossing of the Sele La and the other passes to the south side of the massif. That shortens the trip and removes a whole block of hard stages, but it does not remove the main risk factors: a high overnight stop, moraine ground, remoteness and a long descent.

This version suits a walker who wants to see the north face of Kanchenjunga but does not have time for the full route. Experience of multi-day walking and good fitness are still required. The short programme is not a lightweight sightseeing trip.

The full route around Kanchenjunga

The full Kanchenjunga trek begins by repeating the northern section: Kambachen, Lhonak and Pangpema. The group then returns to Ghunsa, recovers after the high stage and starts the crossing of the passes towards the southern valley.

The second half brings you out at Cheram, Ramche and the Oktang viewpoint by the Yalung glacier. That way you see not one approach but two sides of the massif. The price of the variety – extra days, a second climb after a descent, and a greater demand on your knees and your stamina.

The full version is worth choosing for more than the number of places it visits. It suits people who cope confidently with long stages day after day and who can keep working after the first big objective has been reached. Pangpema is the most important stage here, but it is not the end of the journey.

How the acclimatisation is built

Both programmes keep a separate day at Kambachen, at around 4100 m. It comes before the move up to Lhonak and a night considerably higher. That day is not meant to be spent lying in the lodge: if conditions allow, the guide arranges a short walk to a viewpoint or glacier within reach, returning to the same sleeping altitude.

The next step up – Lhonak, 4800 m. From there the group walks out to Pangpema. The pace is set by how people feel and by safety, not by athletic ambition. Headache, nausea, unusual weakness, loss of coordination or any marked deterioration must be reported to the guide at once.

The underlying programmes mention a possible excursion to roughly 5900 m, but neither the summit nor the exact line is named. So it cannot be treated as a guaranteed part of the tour. Whether it is permissible, what it requires technically and what equipment it needs are all confirmed separately; the main result remains the safe completion of the trekking route as advertised.

What actually makes Kanchenjunga hard

The standard trek is not a technical climb, but it does combine several serious demands:

High overnight stops at Lhonak and Pangpema

Moraine, rocky trails and broken ground

Sections prone to landslides

Long descents that punish the knees

Distance from any developed tourist infrastructure

Roads and domestic flights that depend on the weather

On the full route the passes and the fatigue accumulated after the north base camp add to the difficulty. The short programme has fewer days, but the high section is the same. For both versions it helps to have walked trips where you spend several days on rough ground managing your own pace, food and clothing.

Logistics: why you need time in hand

The mountain part does not begin the moment you land. First you fly from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, then spend a long time in jeeps heading towards Taplejung, and reach the start of the walk after one further transfer. How long it actually takes depends on the state of the road and on the weather.

A chain like that leaves no room for a tight connection with an international departure on the same day. Book your tickets once the internal logistics are confirmed, and leave a sensible reserve before the flight home. The general requirements for entry, insurance and tickets are collected on our page about the documents you need for a trip to Nepal.

Accommodation, food and communications

The mountain section uses simple lodges, and at Pangpema a very basic shelter. A private bathroom, heating, a hot shower and reliable electricity are not guaranteed. Charging may cost money or be unavailable for several days at a time, so take a power bank, spare batteries and a head torch.

Internet and mobile coverage are unreliable. On the remote part of the route they may be absent for long stretches. Do not plan on doing any real laundry at altitude: things dry slowly, and a stock of dry socks and underwear matters more than an extra set of town clothes. The full picture of day-to-day life in the mountains is described in our article on lodges, food and connectivity in Nepal.

Weather and seasons

The programmes are usually planned for spring or autumn, when the high section is more often passable and visibility is more settled than during the monsoon. But the season does not guarantee the weather. In the lower valleys you can meet rain, humidity and landslides; at Kambachen, Lhonak, Pangpema and on the passes – snow, ice, wind and a sharp drop in temperature.

The guide may shorten a high-altitude walk, move a stage to another day or drop a section altogether if conditions are unsafe. Before you fix your dates it is worth reading our page on the seasons in Nepal, and then checking the state of the Kanchenjunga route in particular.

How to prepare

Preparation should include long walks on rough ground, stairs, weekend hikes and regular aerobic training. Pay particular attention to descending: on the way back, tiredness and the load on the knees are often felt more keenly than on the climb.

Break your boots in well in advance. Your clothing has to work in layers and protect you both from rain in the lower valleys and from cold high up. Agree the models of boots, sleeping bag and outer layers with the guide before you travel. Detailed recommendations are collected on our page about preparing for trekking in Nepal.

Which version to choose

Choose the short programme if your main objective is Pangpema, the north base camp, and your days are limited. Choose the full route if you want to see both sides of the massif and are ready for the passes and the extra effort after the northern stage.

If this is your first trip to the country, start with our article on how to choose a first trek in Nepal. For a comparison with the more developed infrastructure of the Khumbu, see our breakdown of the four programmes to Everest. Kanchenjunga does not suit every newcomer: the remoteness and the basic infrastructure matter more here than the absence of technical climbing. Confirm the format of the support, the language of the guide and the porters, and the final logistics before you book. The main programmes with Russian-speaking support are collected on the page of tours to Nepal with a Russian-speaking guide.

Where to read next

See the programme: Trekking to Kanchenjunga Base Camp (India)

Trekking to Kanchenjunga in Nepal comes in at least two fundamentally different shapes.
