The classic approach starts via Skardu and Askole, then works its way out to Paiju camp, the Baltoro glacier and Concordia. On the Mountain Guide programme the route continues to K2 Base Camp, returns to Concordia and crosses Gondogoro La to finish in the Hushe valley.

This format is fundamentally different from the Everest trek in Nepal. There is no chain of lodges here, no daily access to shops and no easy way to cut a stage short. The group lives in tents, moves with a local crew and spends several days on moraine and glacier. It is one of the great treks to an eight-thousander, but you should choose it on the basis of genuine readiness, not just a photograph of K2.

Where the route to K2 runs

K2 stands in the Karakoram, in the Gilgit-Baltistan region. The region’s official tourism portal describes the traditional approach via Skardu, Shigar, Askole, the Baltoro glacier and Concordia. Skardu is the last major logistics hub, and Askole is the starting point of the self-sufficient part of the trek.

The first stages follow the Braldu river. After Paiju the group moves onto the stone-covered surface of the Baltoro. The glacier often looks like a valley made of moraine, but there is ice beneath the layer of rock. The uneven ground demands more attention and more energy than an ordinary dirt trail.

Concordia lies where several major glaciers meet and is the key point of the central Karakoram. K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum IV and other peaks are all visible from there. On the Mountain Guide programme Concordia is not the finish: the group continues along the Godwin-Austen glacier to K2 Base Camp and spends a night there.

What the full route via Gondogoro La adds

The classic version to Concordia may return to Askole by the same path. The through-route goes back to Concordia after K2 Base Camp, heads for Ali Camp, crosses Gondogoro La and descends via Khuspang and Saicho into Hushe. The official Gilgit-Baltistan portal also lists this crossing as the link between the K2 area, Concordia and the Hushe valley.

The advantage of the through-route is a different landscape on the way out and no full repetition of the Baltoro. The price of that advantage is a technical pass day. On Gondogoro La you use crampons, a harness and fixed ropes. Whether the crossing is possible depends on snow, ice, rockfall conditions, weather and the guides’ decision.

A detailed account of this key stage is in our article on the difficulty of and equipment for Gondogoro La. If the pass is not open, you cannot insist on continuing merely because that item appears in the itinerary.

How the 18 days of the programme are structured

The time in the cities is not just for rest. In Islamabad and Skardu the team checks documents, permits and baggage and sets up the working relationship with the local crew. The drive to Askole takes the group to the start of the self-sufficient section, after which there is no quick way to change your boots, add a missing layer or sort out a paperwork problem.

The first walking days, Askole – Jhula – Paiju, lay the foundation for acclimatisation. The rest day at Paiju is there for recovery and for preparing yourself for the glacier. Khoburtse, Urdukas and Goro then raise the altitude of the overnight camps step by step up to Concordia.

The night at K2 Base Camp, at a stated altitude of around 5100 m, is the highest of the programme. Returning to Concordia brings the altitude down again before Ali Camp and the pass. That sequence helps adaptation, but it does not rule out mountain sickness and it does not guarantee safe clearance for the technical day.

What physical preparation is needed

You need experience of multi-day mountain trips, the ability to keep going for several hours at a stretch and to recover in a tent overnight. Long walks over rough ground, stair work, weekend hikes and a steady increase in time on your feet are all useful preparation.

The main mistake is training only for height gain. On the Baltoro your ankles, knees and stabilising muscles work constantly. Rocks shift, the surface keeps changing angle, and the going demands concentration even where there is little gradient. The long descents after Gondogoro La add further strain on the knees at a point when you are already tired.

Before the trip you need to test your boots, trekking poles, rain and cold weather clothing and your own pack on genuinely long outings. For the pass, practise separately with crampons, harness, self-belay and a descender. Technical kit must never be put on for the first time at Ali Camp.

Altitude and acclimatisation

Height is gained gradually, but several nights above 4000 m and the push to 5100 m are still a serious load. Being fit is no protection against mountain sickness. An unusual headache, nausea, loss of coordination, breathlessness at rest or a sudden drop in pace must be reported to the guide immediately.

The rest day at Paiju, the shorter stage to Urdukas and the return from K2 to Concordia each have a specific job in the schedule. They cannot be dropped to shorten your holiday. The decision to continue rests with the guide, based on how you are doing, not on a determination to see Base Camp or the pass at any cost.

Daily life on the Baltoro

The mountain section is spent in tents. The local crew handles catering, the group camp and the transport of agreed baggage, but you keep your own day pack and remain responsible for warm and dry clothing, water, a head torch and your documents. Having a porter does not turn the route into a stroll without a load.

There is no ordinary hotel infrastructure on the glacier. Showers, permanent electricity, mobile internet and daily laundry are not provided. You will need power banks and spare batteries for charging, and dry bags for clothing. What each base camp can actually offer is confirmed before departure.

Weather, the Skardu flight and contingency

Mountain aviation and the roads both depend on weather and current conditions. The domestic leg cannot be connected to an international departure without a buffer. If the Skardu flight is postponed, the receiving team adjusts the logistics within the options available, but the whole chain cannot be guaranteed to stay unchanged.

On the Baltoro the weather can change during the day. Rain lower down, and snow, wind and poor visibility higher up, affect your pace and the state of the pass. Dates, the road plan and the feasibility of Gondogoro La are confirmed for each specific trip.

Documents and insurance

Entry and permit requirements depend on your citizenship and can change. Check them before buying tickets and again before departure. Documents for the local permit are submitted by the deadline and in the format the operator specifies.

Your insurance must cover high-altitude trekking to the maximum altitude of the programme, search and rescue, and emergency evacuation. What matters in the policy is not the marketing name of the package but the actual exclusions, the geographical scope and the procedure for contacting the assistance service.

Russian-speaking or local guide

The main programme includes a Russian-speaking leader. This format suits someone who wants tactics explained, their preparation checked and help in dealing with the local crew without a language barrier.

The version with a local guide keeps the same 18-day route but is intended for an independent traveller who takes instructions confidently in an agreed language and is ready to handle day-to-day matters without a Russian-speaking leader on hand. Choose on the basis of genuine independence, not price alone.

What to check before booking

You have experience of multi-day mountain trips and sleeping in tents

You understand the longest stages and the strain of moraine terrain

You have already learned to use the technical equipment for Gondogoro La

You have checked the maximum altitude and the altitude of the overnight camps

The language of the leader and the baggage weight limit are confirmed

Your international tickets leave a margin for the domestic logistics

Your insurance covers the altitude, rescue work and evacuation

To understand the central part of the route, read our separate article on the Baltoro glacier and Concordia.
