It is not a route to the summit. The trek ends at the glacier, and the best view of Everest usually comes from a separate walk up Kala Patthar.

Lukla and the first stage

Getting into the mountains depends on the weather. After the flight the group does not try to gain maximum height straight away: the first stages let you settle into a rhythm. Your rucksack, boots and poles are checked here, while a mistake can still be put right.

Namche Bazaar

Namche is the logistical and acclimatisation hub. The extra day is spent walking higher and coming back down, not simply resting. A fast walker should not skip this step: how quickly your legs move and how quickly your body adapts are two different things.

Tengboche, Dingboche and Lobuche

As you climb, the vegetation, the temperature and the standard of the lodges all change. The overnight stops get higher, while the phone signal and the menu get simpler. Another acclimatisation stage is often planned in Dingboche. The exact stops may vary with the state of the group and with what accommodation is available.

Gorak Shep and Base Camp

Gorak Shep serves as the starting point for the walks to Base Camp and to Kala Patthar. The two do not have to be done on the same day. Visibility, wind and how people feel determine the order. In spring, Base Camp looks quite different from how it looks outside the expedition season.

Kala Patthar

This is a high viewpoint, not a compulsory proof that you have finished the trek. The climb is cold and takes strength after several days on the trail. If symptoms of altitude appear, it is dropped. The panorama also depends on the cloud.

The way back

The descent goes faster, but it still takes several days. Knees and feet take a heavy load, so poles and a sensible pace remain important. The scheduled flight out of Lukla may be delayed; keep a buffer before your international departure.

Variations on the route

The classic line can be extended with the Gokyo lakes or with high passes, but that adds altitude and difficulty. Alternatives cannot be bolted on at the last minute without extra days and extra preparation. A comparison of the itineraries can be found in the article «Trekking to Everest: which itinerary to choose».

The exact commercial terms, services and dates are set out in the Everest Base Camp itinerary.

Distance. The final mileage depends on where you start, on the acclimatisation walks and on any additional viewpoints. That is why a single number from a fitness app may differ from the one in the itinerary. For your training, the number of consecutive days and the total ascent matter more than the overall length.

Food and water. Lodge menus change with altitude. Choose food you know and do not count on constant variety. Ask the operator how drinking water is treated; a clear-looking source is no proof that it is safe.

Changes to the plan. Weather, health or a closed section of trail can alter the order of the overnight stops. That is acceptable as long as the rate of ascent stays safe and everyone is kept informed. An itinerary should follow a clear logic for such decisions rather than promise that every hour is fixed.

Clothing. The lower valley and the high overnight stops call for quite different set-ups. Layers work well, together with a warm jacket, mittens and sun protection. Pack spare gloves and dry socks separately from anything wet.

Boots. The classic trek calls for well-worn trekking boots, not double expedition boots. The choice depends on the season and the snow. Test a new boot on a long descent, where pressure on the toes usually shows up first.

How to read the itinerary. The altitude where you sleep matters more than the highest point of the day. Compare the sequence of sleeping heights, not just the impressive summits. An optional side walk does not have to be done if you have not recovered well.

Why the length of the route cannot be judged in kilometres alone

On the map the distances between lodges look modest, but the pace is set by altitude, ascent, staircase-like sections, oncoming traffic on the trail and your own condition. A day with a short stage may be an acclimatisation day rather than a «wasted» one. Speeding up to save a single night changes more than the schedule: it changes the whole shape of your adaptation.

When you compare itineraries, write down the altitude of every night and the highest point reached each day. A good route shows a gradual profile and leaves room to watch how people are doing. The name of a village on its own is not enough: stops with similar names can lie at different altitudes or in different parts of the valley.

The way back is usually quicker, but it is not a formality. After the high point you are left with tiredness, long descents and a dependence on the weather in Lukla. Booking an international flight for the day you are due out of the mountains creates needless risk, so leave a realistic buffer in Kathmandu.

The classic route to Everest on the Nepalese side runs from Lukla through Namche Bazaar and the upper Khumbu valley to the southern Base Camp.
