The classic Elbrus route is higher than most of the popular overnight stops on the treks and it calls for crampons, but it is technically simpler than a big Himalayan expedition. Decide on the particular objective first.

Elbrus and the trek to Everest Base Camp

On Elbrus you are preparing for one long summit day on snow and ice. The trek to Everest involves no technical climbing, but the effort is spread across many consecutive days and nights spent high up. Elbrus requires mountaineering boots and crampons; the Nepali trek requires steady walking fitness and well broken-in trekking boots.

Elbrus and a Himalayan pass

A high pass may be lower than the summit of Elbrus, but the remoteness and the length of the route make the consequences of illness or injury more serious. Conditions on any particular pass depend on the snow and the season. There is usually no cable car and no quick descent to the valley.

Elbrus and climbing a peak

Nepal’s trekking peaks add a glacier, ropes and camps. Experience on Elbrus is useful here, but it is not sufficient: you have to demonstrate the skills the particular route calls for.

Which is harder physically

Elbrus concentrates the effort into summit day. A Himalayan trek demands recovery between repeated days of walking. Someone who moves well for one day may cope less well with a fortnight in a row, and the other way round.

Acclimatisation

In both cases a gradual gain in height is what matters. An earlier Elbrus climb can show you how your body responds, but acclimatisation does not last indefinitely and it does not replace the schedule of a new trip. Medication does not turn a fast route into a safe one.

Living conditions and logistics

on the south side of Elbrus you use a hotel, the cable car and a high hut;

in Nepal the journey may involve a domestic flight, lodges and porters carrying the bags;

on an expedition peak you add tented camps and group equipment;

insurance has to match the country, the altitude and the activity.

Which to do first

If you want to try a snow-and-ice summit and a short high-altitude programme, consider Elbrus. If what matters more is a long journey with no obligatory summit, choose a trek in Nepal. To progress after that, it is worth pairing time at altitude with separate technical training.

Four different things the word «Himalayas» can mean

A lodge trek means walking between settlements with no technical summit. A high pass adds a long day and a dependence on the snow. A trekking peak calls for crampons, ropes and camp logistics. An expedition to a seven- or eight-thousander means weeks of acclimatisation and a fundamentally different level of risk. Without saying which of these you mean, a comparison with Elbrus has no practical value.

Which skills carry over from Elbrus

What helps is experience of early starts, layered clothing, controlling your pace, crampons and watching how you react to altitude. What does not carry over automatically is working on fixed ropes, living across several camps, moving on a crevassed glacier and setting up a supplementary oxygen system for yourself.

After Elbrus, write down what worked: the pace of acclimatisation, your sleep, your appetite, the boots, the gloves and how you recovered. An honest diary is worth more than a summit certificate when you come to choose the next objective.

How to train

For Elbrus what matters is the long summit day; for a trek it is repeated effort. A plan combines an aerobic base, long days out, climbs with a loaded rucksack and strength endurance in the legs. Before a technical peak you add work in crampons, on a rope team and on fixed rope. A week before the flight is not the time to carry the full weight for the first time.

How to compare the cost

The price of Elbrus is usually concentrated in a short programme. In Nepal the tour also carries an international flight, domestic transport, permits, insurance, services on the trek and a reserve for delays. Compare the whole trip, door to door, rather than two headline prices on a website.

Ways to choose

a first go at crampons and a summit: the classic south side of Elbrus;

a long journey and the culture: a lodge trek in Nepal;

a test of several days at altitude: a base camp or a circuit with acclimatisation;

raising your technical level: a course and a lower training peak;

an expedition objective: a sequence of several stages you have actually completed.

The choice does not have to move only upwards. Sometimes a lower technical route does more for a future Himalayan trip than another high mountain of a kind you already know.

Insurance. A policy for Elbrus does not always work for Nepal. Check the country, the altitude, whether trekking or mountaineering is covered, helicopter evacuation, search operations and the exclusions for long-term conditions. The assistance service and the procedure for approving costs matter more than a marketing label about extreme sport.

The season. Elbrus and the Himalayan route you choose may have quite different best windows. Going straight from one to the other is not always sensible in terms of weather or recovery. Look at the calendar for each objective separately, allowing for visas, the monsoon, snow on the passes and whether the transport is running.

A sensible next step. Start by naming the skill you are short of: tolerance of altitude, days of walking on end, glacier travel or self-sufficiency. Then choose the route that develops exactly that. Taking them in that order reduces the risk and makes each trip an objective in its own right rather than a formal step towards Everest.

The first step: for a first experience of altitude, set the requirements in this article against the nine-day programme for climbing Elbrus from the south; a Himalayan project is chosen separately, on the merits of its own route.

Comparing Elbrus with «the Himalayas in general» does not work: the Himalayas contain lodge treks, high passes, trekking peaks and eight-thousanders.
