The routes start from Terskol, Cheget, Azau and the side gorges, and they differ in height gain and in the state of the trail. A cable car can be part of a walk, but it is no substitute for acclimatisation.

Short walks

The area around Terskol is well suited to getting to know the region and to a first day out. Even a short route calls for boots with proper grip, a waterproof and enough daylight in hand. After rain, rocks and tree roots turn slippery.

Cheget

The slopes of Cheget give you a view of Elbrus and the Main Caucasus Range. Lift operations and trail access change with the season. In winter the route crosses avalanche terrain and is nothing like an ordinary summer walk.

Azau and the high-mountain zone

The cable car lifts you quickly. The upper stations are colder and windier, and you may start to feel unwell. Do not walk out onto a glacier without a guide and equipment simply because you can see other people nearby.

The side gorges

Adyl-Su, Adyr-Su, Irik and the other valleys offer routes of varying length. Roads, permits and conservation restrictions need checking for your dates. The details are gathered in the article on the gorges of the Elbrus region.

When to go

Summer and early autumn tend to suit walking routes best, though snow and thunderstorms are still possible. In spring the trails are in mixed condition; in winter you need separate skills and avalanche judgement. The calendar is no substitute for a forecast and local information.

Equipment

broken-in boots;

poles;

clothing in layers;

protection from rain and sun;

water and a snack;

an offline map and a charged phone;

a personal first-aid kit.

On your own or with a guide

An experienced walker can manage a waymarked, accessible trail alone after checking conditions. A guide is needed for unfamiliar terrain, for anything approaching a glacier, for winter conditions, or when you want the walk to fit into an acclimatisation plan.

Other journeys are collected in the Mountain Guide catalogue. Summit routes are kept separate, in the Elbrus climbing section.

Acclimatisation. A walk can form part of a climbing plan if the altitude and the effort have been agreed. A long outing taken at random on the first day sometimes sets your recovery back. After riding the cable car up, it pays to watch how you feel rather than to prove your fitness.

Navigation. Even on a popular trail you need an offline map and an eye on the clock. Tracks can branch off towards climbing objectives. Do not cross a river or a snow patch merely because another group went ahead of you.

Conservation. Do not leave the firm trail without good reason, take your rubbish with you and do not pick plants. Any permits and restrictions in the side valleys should be checked in advance.

Children and beginners. Choose a route that allows an early return, and do not use the cable car as an altitude contest. A child may be less able to describe symptoms. If anyone feels unwell, go down.

Transport. The start and finish of a trail may be in different places. Check your transport back and the last cable car. Do not count on flagging down a car late in the evening in a remote gorge.

Insurance. An ordinary trek and a glacier outing can carry different terms of cover. State your real activity and altitude, not just the name of the region.

How to put together a route over several days

Alternate a higher or longer day with a quiet one. Use the first outing to test your boots, your pace and your reaction to altitude, not to set a record. Then pick the next objective according to how you actually feel and what the forecast says. A spare day lets you postpone a viewpoint route if cloud or rain closes it in.

For each outing, note down the starting point, the height gain, your turnaround marker, the transport back and the offline map. Tell someone who is not on the route what you plan to do. If you are going without a guide, avoid sections where a navigation error puts you on a glacier, on steep snow or on technical ground.

When you get back, take stock not only of how tired you are but of how well you recover: sleep, appetite, headache and steadiness on your feet. Do not automatically make the next day harder. Approached this way, you get to see several different parts of the Elbrus region without turning a holiday into a series of endurance tests.

Trekking programmes in the Elbrus region

Trekking and holidays in the Elbrus region, 9 days

Holidays in the Elbrus region, 7 days

Trekking in the Elbrus region lets you see the Caucasus without committing to an ascent of Elbrus itself.
