Elbrus programmes are not run out of a base camp. They are run out of the Baksan valley, and the valley accommodation is where the acclimatisation days, the briefings and the gear checks happen \u2014 usually more nights than are spent on the mountain itself.<\/p>\n

Where it is<\/h2>\n

The company’s base is in Terskol, the village at the head of the valley. The practical advantage is proximity to everything a climber needs before going up: the post office, cash machines, the bus stop, a medical station and the main shops of the gorge are all within walking distance. Azau, where the cable car up the mountain starts, is 3.5 km away; Cheget is 1.5 km; the Narzan valley is about 3 km.<\/p>\n

What is in the building<\/h2>\n

Equipment rental is available in the same building, in the basement, along with a laundry. That combination matters more than it sounds: on the day a group discovers that a jacket is not warm enough or a boot does not fit, the fix is downstairs rather than a drive away. Why the company runs it directly<\/h2>\n

The hotel is under the company’s management for the whole climbing season. That is the reason changes can be made quickly \u2014 a group held down by weather, a client descending early, an extra night added at the last minute \u2014 without a booking negotiation with a third party. Higher up, the mountain refuges<\/a> follow a similar logic and are compared separately.<\/p>\n

Booking without a programme<\/h2>\n

Rooms and meals can be booked by independent climbers as part of support services for independent climbers<\/a>, alongside the transfer, border-zone permit, registration and forecasting services listed there. For travellers who want the valley without a summit attempt, the non-summit programmes in the valley<\/a> are built around the same base.
