It is not a tour package and not a set of identical expeditions dropped into a calendar. Every mountain calls for its own decisions on route, season, acclimatisation, technical preparation, high-altitude support and acceptable risk. Many years often pass between a first eight-thousander and a fourteenth.<\/p>\n<p>Mountain Guide offers current programmes for Everest, Manaslu, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I and Gasherbrum II. For the other summits we do not create the appearance of a product where no separate published programme exists. First ascents, winter climbs, supplementary oxygen and the role of partners are compared in the article <a href=\"https:\/\/mountainguides.pro\/50-great-mountaineers-of-the-world\/\">\u201c50 great mountaineers of the world\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"classic\">The classic 14 eight-thousanders<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theuiaa.org\/8000m-peaks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) uses the established list of fourteen mountains above 8000 metres<\/a>. The classic system counts independent main summits, not every subsidiary point of a massif. That is why the South Summit of Everest, Lhotse Shar, Broad Peak Central and other high secondary summits are not added to the fourteen.<\/p>\n<p>On this page we look only at the classic list. Modern debates about the geographical independence of particular summits matter for science and for sporting records, but they do not change the historically accepted programme. When someone says they are collecting the 14 eight-thousanders, this is normally the list they mean.<\/p>\n<p>The first person to complete all fourteen was Reinhold Messner, in 1986, and he did so without supplementary oxygen. His achievement became a reference point, but not a compulsory standard for everyone. Today expeditions are made in different styles: with oxygen and without, with high-altitude workers or more self-sufficiently, on classic or alternative routes. Results can only be compared together with their context.<\/p>\n<p>Completing the list requires reaching the true high point of every mountain. On a long ridge a point that looks close by may not be the summit. K2 is lower than Everest, but its classic route is more technical and objectively more dangerous in character. Annapurna I is only tenth by height, yet it is historically known for serious avalanche risk. Cho Oyu and Manaslu are often called relatively accessible eight-thousanders, but \u201crelatively\u201d means a comparison within an extreme class of mountains, not ordinary accessibility.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"all-peaks\">A short profile of each of the fourteen mountains<\/h2>\n<h3>Everest &#8211; 8848.86 m<\/h3>\n<p>Everest is the highest summit on Earth above sea level and the best-known mountain on the list. Classic expeditions go from the Nepalese or the Tibetan side, but the availability of each side, the permits and the logistics change. The climb requires long acclimatisation, several trips up to the high camps, waiting for a weather window and confident work on fixed ropes.<\/p>\n<p>Popularity does not make Everest easy. On the summit stage you spend a long time in the extreme-altitude zone, dependent on your own condition, on the team, on the oxygen system where it is used and on the quality of the decisions taken. A queue on one section, cold, wind or a loss of pace can change the plan quickly.<\/p>\n<p>For most people Everest should not be a first eight-thousander but the culmination of several high-altitude expeditions. Exceptions are judged on the quality of the CV, not on ambition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mountainguides.pro\/tours\/climbing\/climbing-mount-everest\/\"><strong>Everest expedition<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>K2 &#8211; 8611 m<\/h3>\n<p>K2 is the highest summit of the Karakoram and the second highest mountain in the world. It combines enormous altitude with sustained technical difficulty. Its classic line has no long \u201ceasy\u201d high-altitude section where weak technique can be made up for with endurance alone. Rock, ice, steep terrain, rockfall and fast-changing weather call for a very strong team.<\/p>\n<p>K2 should not be seen as the automatic next objective after Everest. A climber needs separate Karakoram experience, technical routes, the ability to work quickly at altitude and a mature assessment of objective risk.<\/p>\n<p>There is currently no separate up-to-date Mountain Guide programme for K2 on the site.<\/p>\n<h3>Kangchenjunga &#8211; 8586 m<\/h3>\n<p>Kangchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world, a massif on the border between Nepal and India. The expedition is known for its great length, its remoteness and serious high-altitude terrain. The tradition of respect for the summit and the actual turnaround point on historic ascents have given rise to separate debates about records, but the modern goal of a classic programme is a documented high point in accordance with the rules of the particular climb.<\/p>\n<p>This is a summit for someone with substantial 8000+ experience, not a starting objective for the collection. There is currently no separate up-to-date Mountain Guide programme.<\/p>\n<h3>Lhotse &#8211; 8516 m<\/h3>\n<p>Lhotse stands next to Everest. On the classic Nepalese side a considerable part of the approach and of the lower high-altitude infrastructure is shared, but the upper route and the summit are separate. Being close to Everest does not turn Lhotse into a short appendix.<\/p>\n<p>The main summit of Lhotse belongs to the fourteen; Lhotse Shar and Lhotse Middle are separate points of the massif and are not added to the classic figure of 14. Mountain Guide has no Lhotse programme at present.<\/p>\n<h3>Makalu &#8211; 8485 m<\/h3>\n<p>Makalu is recognisable by its severe pyramidal shape. It is a technical and remote Himalayan expedition with great altitude, difficult upper terrain and less infrastructure than Everest. You need experience of confident work on mixed ground and the ability to keep up a pace on a long expedition.<\/p>\n<p>Makalu is rarely chosen as a first eight-thousander. No separate programme is published on the Mountain Guide site.<\/p>\n<h3>Cho Oyu &#8211; 8188 m<\/h3>\n<p>Cho Oyu is often called one of the more accessible eight-thousanders in terms of the technical profile of its classic route. That reputation needs care: an altitude above 8000 metres, strong wind, glacier, crevasses and seracs keep the task an extreme one.<\/p>\n<p>In practice, access to Cho Oyu depends heavily on permits and on whether the side is open. Old descriptions of the logistics cannot be treated as a promise for a new season. There is currently no separate up-to-date Mountain Guide programme.<\/p>\n<h3>Dhaulagiri I &#8211; 8167 m<\/h3>\n<p>Dhaulagiri I is the highest summit of the massif of the same name in Nepal. The mountain is known for difficult weather, avalanche terrain and a highly self-sufficient expedition. The Roman numeral matters: it is the main summit, Dhaulagiri I, that belongs to the classic fourteen.<\/p>\n<p>It calls for established experience of several high-altitude expeditions. There is no separate Mountain Guide programme at present.<\/p>\n<h3>Manaslu &#8211; 8163 m<\/h3>\n<p>Manaslu is one of the most popular first eight-thousanders. Classic expedition infrastructure and the technical profile of the route have made the mountain a frequent choice for the step from seven-thousanders up to 8000+. But popularity does not remove the avalanche danger, the crevasses, the seracs or the long time spent at altitude.<\/p>\n<p>The true summit is especially important here. The upper ridge can create a false sense of a completed climb before the actual high point. A participant has to follow the team&#8217;s decisions and must not turn confirming the summit into a dangerous race.<\/p>\n<p>Before Manaslu, a well-climbed seven-thousander and experience of high camps, crampons, an ascender and long acclimatisation are all useful. Admission in a particular case is decided individually.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mountainguides.pro\/tours\/climbing\/climb-manaslu\/\"><strong>Manaslu expedition<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Nanga Parbat &#8211; 8126 m<\/h3>\n<p>Nanga Parbat is the western eight-thousander of the Himalaya, in Pakistan. Its enormous vertical relief, its long walls and its serious weather have given the mountain a severe reputation. The choice of route changes the character of the expedition fundamentally, so the general phrase \u201cclimbing Nanga Parbat\u201d is not enough to judge by.<\/p>\n<p>It is not a typical first 8000+ objective. There is no separate up-to-date Mountain Guide programme on the site.<\/p>\n<h3>Annapurna I &#8211; 8091 m<\/h3>\n<p>Annapurna I was the first eight-thousander to be climbed, but today it remains one of the most serious mountains on the classic list. The main problems come from avalanche terrain, seracs and objective danger. A low place in the table does not reduce the risk.<\/p>\n<p>For Annapurna what matters is not only personal technique and fitness but also the ability to judge a section that cannot be made safe by care alone. There is no separate Mountain Guide programme at present.<\/p>\n<h3>Gasherbrum I &#8211; 8080 m<\/h3>\n<p>Gasherbrum I, also known as Hidden Peak, stands in the Karakoram. It is higher than Broad Peak and Gasherbrum II and is usually regarded as more technically demanding than GII. The expedition takes place in the remote area of the Baltoro Glacier and calls for a good level of self-sufficiency.<\/p>\n<p>Mountain Guide publishes a combined programme for the Gasherbrum I and II region. Whether an attempt on a particular summit, or on both, is possible depends on the format of the expedition, the permits, the acclimatisation, the weather and the participant&#8217;s condition; the name of the combined programme is not a guarantee of two summits.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mountainguides.pro\/tours\/climbing\/gasherbrum-i-and-ii\/\"><strong>Gasherbrum I and II expedition<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mountainguides.pro\/2026\/08\/14\/gasherbrum-i-vs-ii\/\">Gasherbrum I and II compared: altitude, routes and preparation<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Broad Peak &#8211; 8051 m<\/h3>\n<p>Broad Peak stands in the Karakoram not far from K2. Its name reflects the long upper massif. To count the classic summit you have to reach the main high point rather than finish the attempt at a nearer point on the long ridge.<\/p>\n<p>Broad Peak is sometimes chosen as a first Karakoram eight-thousander. It does not become safe for the absence of the figure 8500: the long approach, the remoteness, the altitude, the weather and the upper ridge all demand strong preparation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mountainguides.pro\/tours\/climbing\/broad-peak\/\"><strong>Broad Peak expedition<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mountainguides.pro\/2026\/08\/14\/broad-peak-height-route-and-difficulty\/\">The big guide to Broad Peak: altitude, route and difficulty<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Gasherbrum II &#8211; 8035 m<\/h3>\n<p>Gasherbrum II is one of the most frequent candidates for a first eight-thousander in the Karakoram. Its classic route is usually judged less technical than Gasherbrum I, but you will still need high-altitude experience, glacier skills and the ability to live self-sufficiently on a long expedition.<\/p>\n<p>The Baltoro area adds long approaches and complex logistics. The expedition does not end the moment the summit push is over: you have to descend safely and walk out of a remote area.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mountainguides.pro\/tours\/climbing\/gasherbrum-i-and-ii\/\"><strong>The Gasherbrum I and II programme<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Shishapangma &#8211; 8027 m<\/h3>\n<p>Shishapangma is the lowest of the classic eight-thousanders and the only one lying entirely in Tibet. Its reputation as a relatively accessible mountain again needs an important qualification: the central summit and the main summit are not the same thing, and the traverse to the high point can be technically and objectively serious.<\/p>\n<p>To complete the fourteen you have to reach the true main summit as recognised in sporting records. Whether an expedition is possible depends on permits. There is no separate Mountain Guide programme at present.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"geography\">The Himalaya and the Karakoram: where all the eight-thousanders are<\/h2>\n<p>The eight-thousanders are concentrated in a few countries and regions. Nepal remains the main centre of Himalayan expeditions: routes on Everest, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, Dhaulagiri I, Manaslu and Annapurna I start from its territory. Some of the massifs lie on the border with China.<\/p>\n<p>The Pakistani part of the programme covers K2, Nanga Parbat, Gasherbrum I, Broad Peak and Gasherbrum II. The four Karakoram summits are reached through the large Baltoro area, but shared geography does not make them one standard product. Permits, camps and the high-altitude strategy are arranged for the particular expedition.<\/p>\n<p>Shishapangma lies entirely in China. Cho Oyu, Everest and some other border massifs have Tibetan sides whose accessibility depends on state policy and permits. Information about a route that was open several years ago is no guarantee that you can enter the area today.<\/p>\n<p>For a project spanning years, geography affects your skills. Nepalese expedition infrastructure, the long approaches of the Karakoram and the permit regime of Tibet all set different tasks. Someone used to one area has to learn how another is organised from scratch.<\/p>\n<p>When planning several summits one after another, you cannot look only at how close they are. The body may be worn down after the first attempt, and the permits and season of the second mountain may not fit your recovery. Geographical efficiency must not override medical and sporting logic.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"first\">How to choose a first eight-thousander<\/h2>\n<p>A first eight-thousander is chosen neither by the lowest altitude nor by an advertised ranking of the \u201ceasiest\u201d. First you assess the person&#8217;s experience, then what the route demands, and only after that the calendar.<\/p>\n<p>The mountains most often discussed are Manaslu, Gasherbrum II, Broad Peak or Cho Oyu when that side is open. Each has its own constraints:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Manaslu<\/strong> &#8211; developed expedition infrastructure, but substantial avalanche and glacier risk.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gasherbrum II<\/strong> &#8211; a logical way into the Karakoram, but remoteness, altitude and a high degree of self-sufficiency.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Broad Peak<\/strong> &#8211; a long upper ridge and the need to reach the main summit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cho Oyu<\/strong> &#8211; comparatively moderate technique on the classic line, but accessibility depends on permits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Everest can be a first eight-thousander for a strong and thoroughly prepared participant with serious seven-thousanders behind them, personal support and a full expedition system. But for most people it is more sensible first to climb a lower 8000+ summit, see how the body responds and only then move on to 8848.86 metres.<\/p>\n<p>Before booking it helps to answer:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>what is the highest altitude you have reached and what was your highest night out;<\/li>\n<li>have you successfully climbed a seven-thousander without critical symptoms;<\/li>\n<li>can you work on fixed ropes, in crampons and roped up;<\/li>\n<li>how do you cope with several weeks of living in tents;<\/li>\n<li>do you have experience of very cold and very long summit pushes;<\/li>\n<li>how quickly do you recover after high-altitude rotations;<\/li>\n<li>are you ready to turn back on the guide&#8217;s decision or because of your own condition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"progression\">The path from your first mountains to 8000+<\/h2>\n<p>Gaining altitude has to be matched by gaining skills. The simple ladder of \u201cElbrus &#8211; seven-thousander &#8211; eight-thousander\u201d is far too crude: two people with the same names on their CV can have completely different experience.<\/p>\n<p>A working progression might include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Five-thousanders.<\/strong> First multi-day routes, crampons, roped travel, life at altitude and observing your acclimatisation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Six-thousanders or non-technical summits of almost seven thousand metres.<\/strong> A longer schedule, high camps and self-sufficiency.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A seven-thousander.<\/strong> Experience of sleeping and working in a zone where recovery is already severely limited.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Technical routes.<\/strong> If the mountain ahead calls for rock, ice and fixed ropes, the skill is built separately rather than picked up at altitude.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A first eight-thousander.<\/strong> Chosen on your preparation profile and on the quality of the team.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A review of the result.<\/strong> Even a successful summit does not mean you are ready for K2, Kangchenjunga or Annapurna.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The classic <a href=\"https:\/\/mountainguides.pro\/snow-leopard-mountaineering-challenge\/\">\u201cSnow Leopard\u201d<\/a> can be a strong high-altitude school: five seven-thousanders show how your body reacts and build self-sufficiency. But for the technically difficult eight-thousanders you also need routes of the corresponding character.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"oxygen\">Supplementary oxygen and climbing style<\/h2>\n<p>Whether to use supplementary oxygen is one of the key decisions of an expedition. It affects speed, how you feel, tactics, the make-up of the team, the logistics and the cost. At the same time oxygen does not cancel the altitude and does not turn an eight-thousander into an ordinary mountain.<\/p>\n<p>The system requires:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a correctly fitted mask and regulator;<\/li>\n<li>training in switching over and monitoring consumption;<\/li>\n<li>calculating the cylinders and the reserves;<\/li>\n<li>an understanding of what to do if it ices up or fails;<\/li>\n<li>coordinated work by the high-altitude team.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Climbing without oxygen makes substantially higher demands on your physiology, your speed and your altitude experience. The decision must not be taken for the sake of status at the start of a mountaineering career. It has to rest on previous results at great altitude and on an honest assessment by the team.<\/p>\n<p>When comparing achievements you need to state the style: oxygen, personal high-altitude support, route preparation, use of ready-made camps, the actual summit reached. These details do not devalue a climb &#8211; they make the description accurate.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"preparation\">Preparing for an eight-thousander expedition<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Aerobic endurance.<\/strong> You have to move economically for many hours and repeat the work after incomplete recovery. Training is built over months: regular volume, hills, long days and a sensible taper before departure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strength endurance.<\/strong> Legs and trunk carry the ascent, the descent and the load. Shoulders and arms are needed for the ascender and the technical sections. What matters is keeping moving after fatigue, not just completing one hard session.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Technique.<\/strong> Crampons, ice axe, harness, ascender, descender, fixed ropes and roped travel all have to be automatic. At eight thousand metres no time should go on hunting for a karabiner or working out how the regulator works.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Living at altitude.<\/strong> Sleep, water, food, foot care, hygiene, batteries, clothing and order in the tent all become part of safety. Mistakes accumulate over weeks and show up in the summit cycle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cold.<\/strong> High-altitude boots, down clothing, mitts and the layering system are tested beforehand. Frostbite often starts with something small: tight boots, a damp glove, slowing down, dehydration or being unable to fix a fault quickly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psychological resilience.<\/strong> An expedition consists of waiting and uncertainty as much as of movement. Weather can destroy a perfect plan, and the summit may stay out of reach after weeks of work. A participant has to keep to a routine and accept turning back without trying to make up for the disappointment with risk.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Compatibility within the team.<\/strong> At great altitude one person&#8217;s problems affect everyone else. Clear communication, keeping to agreements and respect for the leader&#8217;s decisions are all needed. Heroic independence without coordination is dangerous.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"altitude\">The death zone, acclimatisation and medicine<\/h2>\n<p>The term \u201cdeath zone\u201d is usually applied to altitudes above 8000 metres. The oxygen pressure is so low that the body cannot fully adapt and keeps deteriorating even at rest. The task of an expedition is to acclimatise well lower down, spend the minimum necessary time high up and descend safely.<\/p>\n<p>An acclimatisation strategy may involve rotations between camps or the preliminary use of another mountain and hypoxic training. No scheme guarantees the summit. The body is judged by actual sleep, appetite, pulse, pace, coordination and symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>Warning signs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>loss of coordination and changes in behaviour;<\/li>\n<li>breathlessness at rest, a worsening cough, crackles in the chest;<\/li>\n<li>severe headache with nausea that does not respond to rest;<\/li>\n<li>unusual slowing, confusion and an inability to carry out simple actions;<\/li>\n<li>loss of vision, marked weakness or signs of frostbite.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At altitude you must not hide symptoms in order to keep your chance. Descending too late can cost not only the summit but your health. A medical consultation before the expedition, personal medicines and a communication and evacuation plan are all essential, but they do not replace an early decision.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"risk\">Risk, objective dangers and turnaround criteria<\/h2>\n<p>Statistics from past decades help you understand a mountain&#8217;s reputation, but they do not predict a particular season. A route can become more dangerous because of snow, heat, a glacier collapse or changes in the seracs. So you cannot choose \u201cthe safest eight-thousander\u201d once and for all.<\/p>\n<p>The turnaround criteria are set in advance:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>cut-off times at key points;<\/li>\n<li>the minimum oxygen reserve and the state of the system;<\/li>\n<li>the weather and how fast it is deteriorating;<\/li>\n<li>the participant&#8217;s pace against the plan;<\/li>\n<li>symptoms of altitude sickness, frostbite and exhaustion;<\/li>\n<li>the state of the route, the ropes, the glacier and the camps;<\/li>\n<li>the possibility of descending safely before dark or before the weather changes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The summit is only half the journey. A significant proportion of accidents happen on the descent, when the goal has been reached, attention drops and reserves of strength are at their lowest. A good team measures success not by a photograph at the top but by everyone getting back.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mistakes\">Typical mistakes in planning the fourteen<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Choosing a mountain by its place in the table.<\/strong> Shishapangma and Gasherbrum II are lower than the rest, but height says nothing about the availability of permits, the upper terrain, the true summit or the state of the route. K2 is lower than Everest but requires a different level of technical readiness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Treating summits as equivalent certificates.<\/strong> A successful Manaslu does not turn a participant into someone ready for Annapurna or K2. After each expedition you have to work out which skills you have genuinely gained and which are still missing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hiding the style of the climb.<\/strong> Oxygen, personal high-altitude support, ready-made camps and a prepared route are important context. Stating them honestly does not diminish the result; it lets you plan the next objective correctly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Booking a series too early.<\/strong> Dates, permits, health and political access all change. A contract for several future eight-thousanders cannot guarantee that they will remain the right sequence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Underestimating recovery.<\/strong> After 8000+ you may face loss of muscle mass, anaemia, a flare-up of old injuries, disturbed sleep and emotional exhaustion. The next expedition should not begin simply because its season has come round.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Treating a turnaround as a failure.<\/strong> In a long project, health preserved is worth more than a calendar record. Sometimes the best contribution to a fourteenth summit is giving up on a third when conditions go beyond the plan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Losing your verification.<\/strong> The true summits and the secondary points of some massifs are different things. Keep your tracks, photographs, reports and the names of witnesses straight after the expedition.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"time-budget\">How many years and how much money the 14 eight-thousanders take<\/h2>\n<p>There is no single timescale. History records speed projects by professional mountaineers, but for most people the fourteen is a programme spanning years. After every big expedition you need recovery, analysis and preparation for the next type of route.<\/p>\n<p>The financial scale depends on the style and on the mountain. The cost is affected by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the permit and state fees;<\/li>\n<li>international and domestic flights;<\/li>\n<li>transport to base camp and load-carrying logistics;<\/li>\n<li>the work of guides, high-altitude workers and personal support;<\/li>\n<li>oxygen, masks, regulators and high-altitude cylinders;<\/li>\n<li>tents, food, communications, forecasts and medical cover;<\/li>\n<li>personal technical and high-altitude equipment;<\/li>\n<li>insurance and a reserve for evacuation;<\/li>\n<li>preliminary expeditions and training.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A single advertised price rarely shows the whole budget. When comparing programmes, check what is included at base camp and higher up, how much oxygen is allowed for, who sets up the camps, whether there is individual support, how refunds work and what happens if a permit is deferred or a side is closed.<\/p>\n<p>Planning all fourteen to specific dates in advance is not rational. It is enough to have a strategy for several years and to prepare the next mountain in detail.
