Everest does not stay in view the whole way from Kathmandu to Base Camp. The terrain and the neighbouring peaks hide it for long stretches, and cloud can take the view away even from the right spot. So it is worth separating the wish to see Everest from the goal of reaching Base Camp: the two are related, but they are not the same thing.<\/p>\n

The first views around Namche<\/h2>\n

After the climb up from Lukla and into the Namche Bazaar area, the trail reaches viewpoints where, in clear weather, you can pick Everest out among the surrounding peaks. The acclimatisation day here is not just for the photograph: you walk higher and come back down to sleep.<\/p>\n

Tengboche and the Khumbu valley<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the way to Base Camp the angle on Ama Dablam, Lhotse and Everest keeps changing. What matters at Tengboche is not a single frame but the combination of the mountain landscape and the cultural setting. The view depends on the weather, and no programme can promise a clear window at a particular hour.<\/p>\n

Why Base Camp is not the best angle on the mountain<\/h2>\n

Base Camp sits at the foot of the Khumbu Icefall, and the summit itself is partly hidden by the surrounding terrain. The value of the place is its position at the start of the expedition route and the sheer scale of the glacier. For the wide panorama people usually walk up Kala Patthar, if the weather and their own condition allow it.<\/p>\n

Kala Patthar and Gokyo Ri<\/h2>\n

Kala Patthar gives the classic close view of Everest and its neighbours, but the walk up is at high altitude and is not an easy stroll after Base Camp. Gokyo Ri offers a different angle and the Gokyo lakes. The route through Gokyo is longer and may include the Cho La pass.<\/p>\n
