After the two main objectives, the group walks back to Lukla.

What you see from Base Camp and from Kala Patthar

Base Camp lies beside the Khumbu glacier and shows you where the climbing route begins, but the summit of Everest is not fully visible from there. That is exactly why Kala Patthar is in the programme: it gives a more open view of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse and the glacial landscape.

Weather can close the panorama down at the planned moment. The guide chooses when to set off according to conditions and how the group is doing, but a clear view cannot be guaranteed. The value of the journey lies in the whole walk through the Khumbu, not in a few minutes at the top.

Why two nights in Namche Bazaar

An acclimatisation day is not a free day that can be cut to shorten a holiday. The group walks higher and comes back down to the same overnight stop. That pattern helps to gauge how your body is responding before the stages to 4000 and 5000 m.

Being in good athletic shape does not prevent acute mountain sickness. If you have a headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual weakness or loss of coordination, tell your guide immediately. If you are getting worse, gaining more height is out of the question.

What preparation is needed

There is no technical climbing on the classic route. What you need is endurance, confidence on rocky trails and the ability to recover after several days of walking. Training should include an aerobic base, long walks and height gain with a light pack.

The final stages go more slowly because of the altitude. Trying to walk faster than the recommended pace does not improve acclimatisation. You carry a day pack with water, warm and waterproof clothing, documents and a personal first-aid kit, even if your main bag has gone to a porter.

Khumbu lodges

This is a lodge-based route. The choice of services is wider in Namche Bazaar, while conditions in Lobuche and Gorak Shep are simpler. A hot shower, charging, Wi-Fi and heating in the room may be unavailable or charged for separately. At altitude, a warm sleeping bag, dry clothing and a decent meal matter more.

The class of lodge does not change the general realities of high-mountain living. A single room and upgraded accommodation are not available everywhere and are confirmed separately.

Flights to Lukla

Departures may be from Kathmandu or from Ramechhap depending on the arrangements in force. Weather can delay or cancel a flight. The exact departure point, group transfer, ticket cost and baggage allowance must all be confirmed before you buy your international flights.

Do not book your international flight home tight against the planned return from Lukla. You need a margin even in the main trekking season.

Who the classic trek suits

People with no climbing experience who are ready for altitudes above 5000 m

Walkers with a regular aerobic training habit

Those who want to cover the whole Khumbu route in both directions

Those willing to accept the guide’s pace and decisions

How to choose a different version

The route via Gokyo adds Cho La and a second valley. The VIP programme changes the level of service but not the altitude load. The short version cuts the return logistics with a helicopter leg and calls for particularly careful scrutiny of the acclimatisation schedule.

A comparison of all four options is published in our article on which Everest trek to choose. Before you travel, also read up on preventing altitude sickness.

Frequently asked questions about Everest Base Camp

Can you see Everest without going up Kala Patthar?

Glimpses appear earlier, but Kala Patthar provides the programme’s main open view. Whether you go up depends on the weather and on how you are feeling.

Is supplementary oxygen needed?

It is not part of a standard trekking format. Any need for medical support is determined by specialists, not by marketing copy.

Can you go for the summit after the trek?

No. The trek introduces you to the region and to altitude, but it does not provide the technical and expedition experience needed to climb Everest.

In short: Everest Base Camp is a high-altitude objective in its own right. It should not be sold as preparation that is automatically sufficient for an ascent of the summit.

The trek to Everest Base Camp is a high-altitude journey through the Khumbu valley, not a lightweight version of climbing the mountain.
