The classic route from the south needs no hard rock climbing, but it goes to 5642 metres. The real difficulties here are the lack of oxygen, the cold, the wind, hours of sustained effort, and the need to give up the summit at the right moment.

How hard is it to climb Elbrus

The technical difficulty depends on the route and on the state of the slope. On the classic south side people walk in crampons, use an ice axe and a harness, and learn to move on snow and ice. Other routes can demand more self-supported experience, movement on the glacier and setting up camps.

Physically, the summit means many hours of effort after several days of acclimatisation. Being in good athletic shape helps you cope with the load, but it does not protect you from altitude sickness. According to the CDC Yellow Book, the risk is set above all by the altitude you start from, by how fast you gain height and by how susceptible you personally are, rather than by how well trained you are.

What most often stops a climb

Altitude. A headache together with nausea, dizziness, weakness or loss of appetite may point to acute altitude sickness. If symptoms appear you must not keep gaining height. If things get worse at the same altitude, you have to descend.

Weather. Conditions on the summit and the saddle are markedly harsher than in Terskol. Strong wind, poor visibility, snow and cold can make going on unsafe even for a well-prepared group.

Pace. Starting too fast spends your strength before the upper part of the route. Moving steadily, keeping stops short and respecting the control time all matter more than trying to gain a few minutes at the start.

Equipment. Unsuitable boots, frozen gloves, faulty crampons or a faulty torch are each reason enough to turn round. The kit has to be tried on and checked before summit night.

Can a beginner do it

Experience of hard climbs is not always essential for the classic south route, but a beginner has to train beforehand, take the instruction offered on the spot, and tell the operator honestly about their health and any previous time at altitude. The decision is not made on age or on how much someone wants it, but on the whole picture: preparation, acclimatisation, how they feel, the weather and whether they can get down safely.

The guide helps to judge conditions, teaches the technique and organises how the group moves, but cannot guarantee either safety or the summit. Turning back because of how someone feels, because of the pace or because of the weather is a normal decision, not a failure.

How to prepare

Over several months it is worth building aerobic endurance, walking on rough ground with height gain, and gradually increasing the length of your sessions. Before the trip you need to break your boots in, check your clothing as a layered system, and learn to use your own mountaineering equipment.

The programme has to leave time for acclimatisation and for instruction. Medication does not replace a gradual gain in altitude; its use is something to discuss with a doctor who knows high-altitude medicine. If you have a long-term heart or lung condition, or anything else that affects how you cope with effort and with low oxygen, get that advice before you book.

When comparing programmes, look at more than the price and the number of days advertised. What matters is the altitude of the overnight stops, the acclimatisation days out, the reserve for weather, the group size, the number of guides on summit day and what happens when someone has to be taken down. Ask in advance which items of equipment are provided, where the instruction takes place and who makes the final decision to turn round. A short route saves days on the calendar, but it does not speed up the body’s adaptation to altitude.

Is the summit realistic

Elbrus can be a realistic objective for a well-prepared climber, but no honest programme promises the result in advance. A successful trip is not only the photograph on top; it is proper acclimatisation, skills learned and the whole group getting back safely.

Compare the Elbrus routes and programmes. For a first attempt people usually look at the classic ascent from the south, checking the length, the number of acclimatisation days, what the price includes and the turnaround rules.

Elbrus is often called an accessible first big mountain, but the word “accessible” is easy to misread.
