A first trip to Mount Elbrus does not have to end on the summit. People come to the Elbrus region for the climb, for trekking, for the cable cars, for skiing and simply to get to know the Caucasus. The mistake is to mix those aims into one plan and assume that a few walks will automatically prepare someone for 5642 m.<\/p>\n

Decide on your main aim first<\/h2>\n

A climb needs a full programme with acclimatisation, instruction and a summit day. A walking holiday needs routes that return to the valley and spare time for the weather. For a sightseeing trip you can base yourself in Terskol, Cheget or Azau and plan one main activity a day.<\/p>\n

Where to stay<\/h2>\n

Terskol, the Cheget meadow and the Azau meadow are three different places. The choice depends on where the group meets, on the cable car, on meals and on transport. \u201cClose to Elbrus\u201d in a hotel description does not mean you can walk to the start you need. Check the exact address and the route on a map.<\/p>\n

How much time to allow<\/h2>\n

Do not book the flight home for the moment the last activity ends. The drive to Mineralnye Vody, the weather and the cable-car operating hours can all move the schedule. On a climb the reserve is set by the programme; on an independent trip it helps to have one day you can shift.<\/p>\n
