It consists of climbing to both summits on one side of the mountain and descending on the opposite side. This is one of the most famous routes, which allows you to test your abilities before attempting higher peaks.

The “cross” of Elbrus can be climbed from north to south (more difficult) or from south to north. It is also possible to climb to the east summit of Elbrus and descend from there by three different routes – the Motorcycle Col (a Land Rover that was taken up there in 1997 is still there), along the rock of Elbrus Saddle (the western slope of the east summit of Elbrus) or on the south side (the easiest route).

We can recommend climbing the “cross” of Elbrus as a training program for climbing as a training program for climbing Lenin Peak, Korjenevskoj Peak, Khan-Tengry, Island Peak, Mera Peak, Aconcagua and Ojos del Salado. The trip begins on the self-supported northern slope, includes the ascent of the East summit, 5621 m, and the West summit, 5642 m, in a single long day at altitude, and finishes with a descent to the southern side of the mountain.

The route suits physically prepared participants for whom a classic ascent of one summit is not enough. The Cross of Elbrus from north to south lets you see both sides of the mountain, gain experience of long work above 5000 m and test your readiness for more serious high-altitude expeditions.

Why climb Elbrus with us? First of all because of the Mountain Guide team. The lead guide works with participants throughout the trip, and assistant guides join for summit day, strictly at a ratio of one guide to three participants.

The number of group summit attempts on the trip is not limited. If the weather, the state of the route or the readiness of the group make it impossible to complete the ascent on the main day, the reserve day can be used for a further attempt at no extra charge.

On the northern slope participants stay in mountain shelters at Emmanuel Glade and at about 3700 m. After both summits the group descends to the high-mountain shelter on the southern slope of Elbrus. Tents are not required during the trip. Three meals a day are provided on the mountain part of the route, and after the descent participants stay at a hotel in Mineralnye Vody.

All published departures run with a minimum group size of two participants.

For partners, family and friends who want to spend the holiday with you but are not climbing, we can arrange a separate holiday trip in the Elbrus region.

Would you prefer to climb the Cross of Elbrus from north to south with your own group only? We arrange a private trip on convenient dates subject to guide availability, adapt the length of the acclimatisation and select the support according to the composition, experience and preparation of the participants.

Important

All published departures run with a minimum group size of two participants.

The order in which the East and West summits are climbed, whether the route can continue and which descent is used are decided by the lead guide, taking account of the weather, the state of the slopes and the readiness of the group.

Any departure from the shelter on summit day counts as a summit attempt.

If the whole group did not reach the summit, the reserve day may be used for a further attempt at no extra charge.
