It is a different sport with a different season, a different skill set and a different failure mode, run on several of the same mountains that appear elsewhere in this catalogue. Everything on this page is a spring objective: the snowpack has to be deep enough to ski and settled enough to be sensible, which is a much narrower window than the summer climbing season on the same peaks.

What the sport actually asks for

Two competences matter and they are independent of each other. The first is uphill: moving efficiently on skins for long days, managing kick turns on steep traverses, and carrying skis on your pack where the ground is too steep or too rocky to skin. The second is downhill: skiing controlled turns on variable, unpisted snow while tired, at altitude, with a pack on. Strong resort skiers are frequently surprised by how different the second one feels, and strong mountaineers are frequently surprised by the first.

Neither is exotic, but both take time on snow to develop, and no ski-touring programme on this site is a place to learn to ski. If you can descend confidently off-piste in poor snow, the rest is trainable.

Caucasus objectives

Elbrus from the south on skis is a ski-mountaineering route on the highest summit in the range. The mountain is a broad, uniform snow dome with thousands of vertical metres of continuous descent and a cable car that removes the lowest and least interesting part of the climb — which is what makes the descent so long and so consistent.

Kazbek from the south on skis is a different kind of day: more glacier, more route-finding, less infrastructure. Kazbek and Elbrus in one trip combines the two into a single spring expedition, which is the efficient way to do both given that the seasons and the region coincide.

Volcanoes

One of the most rewarding ski descents in this catalogue is on a volcano, for the obvious reason that volcanoes are conical, uniform and unbroken by cliff bands. Ararat on skis gives long, consistent fall-line snow on a mountain that carries deep cover well into the early summer.

High-altitude ski mountaineering

Muztagh Ata on skis is the serious end of this page and the highest ski objective in this catalogue. The mountain’s western flank is a long, low-angled snow slope from above 7,000 m — a sustained but low-angled line by 7,000 m standards, which is why skis make so much difference on the way down. It is a full expedition, and it assumes prior high-altitude experience rather than just ski competence.

Why spring

The window for all of these objectives is set by snow rather than by temperature. Too early and the snowpack is deep but unconsolidated, the approaches are long and the days are short. Too late and the lower slopes have melted out, which turns a continuous descent into a series of disconnected patches with a long carry between them. The good weeks sit between those two states, when there is still snow to the road head and the upper mountain has settled.

That window is narrower than it sounds and it moves from year to year, which is why ski-touring plans need more flexibility than summer climbing plans. It is also why a ski programme and a climbing programme on the same mountain rarely share anything but the summit: they are built around entirely different conditions.

A sensible order

If you are new to ski mountaineering but experienced on skis, the Caucasus objectives are the reasonable starting point — the vertical is large, the terrain is uniform, and the infrastructure simplifies access and logistics — though it does not reduce the mountain hazards themselves. Ararat is a step further from home with less support, on terrain whose character changes considerably with conditions. Muztagh Ata is a genuine expedition and belongs at the end of that sequence rather than the start, regardless of how good a skier you are, because the limiting factor there is altitude rather than snow.

The same mountain, a different trip

Elbrus, Kazbek, Ararat and Muztagh Ata all appear in this catalogue twice: once as a summer climb and once as a spring ski tour. These are not two names for one departure. The season differs, the equipment differs, the daily distances differ, and the descent — which is the point of a ski tour and merely the way home on a climb — changes how the whole itinerary is built. If you want the walking version of these mountains, the summer Elbrus programmes and the Caucasus hub are the right starting points.

Equipment

Ski touring needs touring bindings, skins, boots that walk as well as they ski, and avalanche equipment. Some of this can be hired rather than bought — what can be hired locally sets out the current rental range — but ski boots in particular are worth owning, because a boot that fits badly ends a tour faster than any other single piece of kit.

Ski touring is not climbing with skis attached.
