South America offers something no other continent does: 6,000 m summits that a fit, well-prepared person can reach without technical climbing, on mountains dry enough that the route is mostly a very long walk at very high altitude. That makes the Andes a natural place to step up from 5,000 m to 6,000 m \u2014 and the region also holds serious technical ice routes for climbers who want them.<\/p>\n

The Andean high points<\/h2>\n

Aconcagua, 6,961 m in Mendoza province, is the highest mountain outside Asia. It is offered here in several formats that differ in acclimatisation days rather than in route, and the choice between them is one of the most consequential decisions on the trip. Ojos del Salado<\/a>, 6,893 m on the Chile-Argentina border, is the highest volcano in the world and the natural companion objective. The Atacama approach is drier, higher and more vehicle-supported than Aconcagua’s, the summit is a short scramble rather than a walk, and the whole trip has a different feel \u2014 desert rather than mountain valley. Because the two mountains sit in the same season and only a few hundred kilometres apart, Aconcagua and Ojos del Salado in one trip<\/a> exists as a single combined expedition. It is a separate programme from either standalone climb and is deliberately kept that way.<\/p>\n

Volcanoes<\/h2>\n

Further north the volcanoes come in a more forgiving size. Chimborazo and Cotopaxi<\/a> in Ecuador are glaciated peaks close enough to Quito that a two-week trip covers both with acclimatisation between them. Their standard routes are not steep technical climbs, but they cross glaciers and still require rope and crampon skills and guiding \u2014 they are a shorter route into 6,000 m climbing, not an easier kind of mountain. The Mexican volcanoes<\/a> work the same way at slightly lower altitude and in a different season, which makes them a useful alternative when the Andean window does not fit your calendar.<\/p>\n

The Cordillera Blanca<\/h2>\n

Peru is where the Andes become technical. Huascaran<\/a>, the highest peak in the country, is a glaciated expedition with real objective hazard and a proper summit day; it is a step up from the Ecuadorian volcanoes rather than a variation on them. Alpamayo<\/a> is the other end of the spectrum \u2014 a short, steep, ice-fluted face that is climbed for the quality of the climbing rather than for the altitude, and one of the few mountains on this site where technique matters more than endurance.<\/p>\n

Trekking and travel<\/h2>\n

Not everything here is a summit. The Inca heartland<\/a> combines the archaeological sites of the Cusco region with high-altitude walking, and Patagonia<\/a> is a wind-and-granite trekking destination with no altitude at all and an entirely separate season. On the travel side, Machu Picchu with an Amazon extension<\/a>, the Pantanal, Iguazu and Rio<\/a> and Chile from the Atacama to Tierra del Fuego<\/a> are itineraries rather than expeditions; they pair naturally with a climb, before or after, since the long-haul flight is already paid for.<\/p>\n

Two seasons, not one<\/h2>\n

South America runs on a southern-hemisphere calendar, and it holds two distinct mountain seasons rather than one. The high Andes of Argentina and Chile \u2014 Aconcagua and Ojos del Salado \u2014 are generally attempted in the southern summer, when the peaks are driest. Peru’s Cordillera Blanca is generally attempted in the opposite half of the year, during the drier winter months. Weather windows vary from year to year in both. Ecuador, sitting on the equator, has weather windows rather than seasons.<\/p>\n

This matters more than it sounds. It means Huascaran and Aconcagua do not normally fall in one trip, while Aconcagua and Ojos del Salado do. It also means that a climber who wants two Andean objectives in a calendar year is looking at two separate journeys to the continent, and is usually better off pairing each summit with the trekking or travel itinerary that shares its season. The programme pages state the operating window for each objective; this page deliberately does not, because departure planning belongs on the programme itself.<\/p>\n

How to sequence a South American trip<\/h2>\n

One workable pattern is a two-step: Ecuador or Mexico first, to find out how you actually perform above 5,500 m on a short trip, then Aconcagua or Ojos del Salado the following season with that knowledge. Going straight to Aconcagua also works for many climbers, but the failure mode is expensive \u2014 a three-week expedition is a long way to travel to discover that you acclimatise slowly.<\/p>\n

The second thing worth planning around is that the Andean climbing season and the Patagonian trekking season overlap, so a single southern-summer trip can reasonably contain both a summit and a trek.
