Asia covers a broad span of guided mountain objectives on this site: lodge-based treks in Nepal, glacier expeditions in the Karakoram that assume several seasons of prior mountaineering experience, and a group of 5,000 m and 7,000 m peaks in between. This page groups the Asian programmes by the decisions that usually shape the choice \u2014 how high, how long, and how much technical ground you are willing to cover.<\/p>\n
Nepal is a common starting point, because the country supports a lodge-based trekking network that removes camp logistics from the equation. The Everest Base Camp trek, 14 days<\/a> is the reference itinerary; the Everest Base Camp via the Gokyo Lakes, 15 days<\/a> adds the Gokyo valley and a pass crossing for people who would rather not walk the main trail in both directions, and the one-week Everest option<\/a> is a distinct compressed itinerary whose travel and acclimatisation plan should be read in full on its own programme page. These are three different products for three different trips, and they are deliberately not interchangeable.<\/p>\n West of Khumbu the character changes. The Annapurna Circuit<\/a> is a long valley-to-pass traverse through several climate zones; Annapurna Base Camp<\/a> is a shorter sanctuary walk into an amphitheatre of peaks. The Manaslu Circuit<\/a> is quieter and more remote than either. Further east, Kanchenjunga Base Camp<\/a> and Makalu Base Camp<\/a> are the long-format options for trekkers who have already done the popular routes and want distance and solitude rather than altitude records.<\/p>\n If the goal is to stand on a summit rather than under one, Nepal also holds the classic first climbing peaks. Island Peak, 18 days<\/a> and Mera Peak<\/a> both combine a Khumbu approach with a guided ascent, and Island Peak and Mera Peak together<\/a> is a single expedition that takes in both. Ama Dablam<\/a> is a genuine technical step up and should be read as a climbing objective, not a trek with a summit attached.<\/p>\n Pakistan’s Karakoram is the other end of the scale. Approaches involve travel from Islamabad to Skardu, then by road toward Askole, and then on foot along the Baltoro Glacier \u2014 several days of glacier walking before any climbing begins. The K2 Base Camp and the Baltoro<\/a> trek follows that approach to Concordia and is the right programme for travellers who want to see the 8,000 m amphitheatre without attempting anything on it. It is a separate product from the K2 climb and should not be confused with it.<\/p>\n For expedition climbers, Broad Peak<\/a> and Gasherbrum I and II<\/a> are the two Karakoram programmes with full itineraries on this site. Both share the Baltoro approach, both require prior experience above 7,000 m, and both are long trips by any measure \u2014 the drive-in and the walk-in alone account for a week before base camp.<\/p>\n Central Asia is where the site’s own record is deepest. Lenin Peak<\/a> is often described as one of the more approachable 7,000 m peaks: the route is not technically sustained beyond a crevassed section between the 4,400 m and 5,400 m camps, and the main difficulties are the length of the expedition and the altitude itself. Razdelnaya<\/a> is a separate, lower objective on the same mountain for climbers who want the acclimatisation and the experience without committing to the main summit.<\/p>\n Khan Tengri<\/a> is a different proposition. Base camp sits on the North Inylchek Glacier and is reached by helicopter; the itinerary runs to roughly three weeks, involves carrying loads, and the upper mountain is severely cold. It is a technical high-altitude climb and the programme page says so plainly. In the Pamir, Korzhenevskaya<\/a> and Ismoil Somoni (Communism) Peak<\/a> are the two 7,000 m objectives most readily combined in a single season, since they share an approach, and Muztagh Ata<\/a> in western China is among the least technically sustained of the 7,000ers on snow, which is also why it is so often skied.<\/p>\n Ararat<\/a>, 5,137 m in eastern Turkey, is the natural first big climb in this region: a walking ascent in high summer and a genuinely serious one early in the season, when a metre of soft snow can change the day completely. It is permit-dependent, and the route options are compared in more detail on the Ararat programme comparison<\/a>.<\/p>\n Not every Asian programme is about altitude. The Kailash kora<\/a> is a pilgrimage circuit rather than a climb, and the Druk Path trek in Bhutan<\/a> is a short high-plateau route between Paro and Thimphu.<\/p>\n One possible progression through this region, rather than a prescription, is: a Nepal teahouse trek to learn how your body handles 5,000 m, a guided climbing peak such as Island Peak or Mera Peak to learn glacier travel and fixed-line work, then Lenin Peak or Muztagh Ata as a first 7,000 m expedition, and only then the Karakoram or the 8,000 m tier<\/a>. Each step is a different product on this site for a reason: the skills, the trip length and the failure modes are not the same.
