What the 2012 archive report preserved<\/h2>\n

What the Aconcagua 2012 report actually recorded<\/h3>\n

This is a short note about an expedition that has finished, not a general guide to the mountain. It records the essentials: the team completed the trip, the climb took real effort, the members went their separate ways afterwards, and the author’s own journey through South America continued. Every other conclusion – about the weather, the state of the route, how the camps were run or what a climb costs today – cannot be extrapolated from a few lines.<\/p>\n

Archive reports are valuable precisely because they are specific. They show that behind the phrase “an Aconcagua ascent” there is always a particular team, its own pace, the weather of one particular season, and decisions taken on the spot. But a report like this cannot be used in place of the current 17-day Aconcagua programme<\/a> or the trip conditions that apply now.<\/p>\n

Why an old report should not be turned into a forecast<\/h3>\n

One expedition’s success does not prove that the same dates, the same length of trip and the same conditions will suit another group. On Aconcagua the wind, the depth of snow, the state of the trail, the temperature at each altitude band and the available weather window all change. Even within a single season, two neighbouring teams can meet quite different mountains.<\/p>\n

That is why Mountain Guide does not merge an archive report with a general article about the season. Choosing dates is covered separately, in the article on the weather and the climbing season on Aconcagua<\/a>, while personal observations from different years are collected in the note “Mountain weather changes”<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What changes, and what still matters<\/h3>\n

Since this expedition, the cost of the permit, the way it is issued, the make-up of the ground services, the hotels, the camp infrastructure and the commercial terms may all have changed. Before a trip these details must always be taken from the current programme and the official documents, not from a post written in 2012.<\/p>\n

What does not change is the underlying logic of a big high-altitude expedition: the outcome depends not on any promise of the summit but on preparation, gradual acclimatisation, the ability to spend several weeks in the mountains and the willingness to call off a summit attempt when conditions are unsafe. How to use the archive when planning today<\/h2>\n

How to choose an Aconcagua format now<\/h3>\n

For a first expedition to almost 7000 m, the 17-day programme remains Mountain Guide’s core product. It is designed for a climber with previous high-altitude experience and it keeps the sequence of acclimatisation rotations, load carries and contingency decisions set out on the tour page.<\/p>\n

The shorter formats exist not to save on acclimatisation but for people who arrive with suitable, recent altitude behind them. The comparison between the options has been moved into a separate article, “Aconcagua in 7, 12 or 17 days”<\/a>. That way every search question gets its own answer and the expedition archive stays an archive.<\/p>\n

Questions the 2012 post does not answer<\/h3>\n

This short note does not state the ascent route, how the days were divided, the altitudes of the camps, what services were included, the size of the team, the guide-to-client ratio, whether porters were used, when the permit was obtained, or the nature of the difficulties mentioned. None of that can be reconstructed from memory, from photographs or from the present-day programme.<\/p>\n

How to read archive posts before your first big expedition<\/h3>\n

Start by separating a personal report from a set of instructions. A personal report helps you see the length of the journey as part of a team’s life: people walk the route, then go home or carry on travelling across the continent. Instructions have to give verifiable answers about today’s logistics, preparation, insurance and included services.<\/p>\n

Then compare several kinds of material. The destination hub shows the product range, the programme page fixes the terms of one specific tour, topic articles answer individual search questions in detail, and the archive preserves the history of Mountain Guide. Together they give the full picture without confusing one purpose with another.<\/p>\n

What to tell us before you book<\/h3>\n

Your manager needs to know more than your most recent summit: the dates of your high-altitude experience, your highest sleeping altitude, how you felt, how long your days out were, the weight you carried and how confident you are in crampons. That information helps in choosing between the full and the shortened programme, and shows in good time whether you need an additional preparatory mountain before Aconcagua.<\/p>\n

Another team’s success in the archive is not an argument for acceptance onto a trip. The decision is based on your current experience and on the requirements of the programme you have chosen.<\/p>\n

Why Mountain Guide keeps its old reports<\/h3>\n

A history of expeditions is evidence that a destination exists as more than a modern sales page. At the same time, old posts need careful editing: the original account has to be preserved, its date made clear, and the reader pointed towards up-to-date information.<\/p>\n

For that reason this URL is not merged with the articles on weather, cost or routes. The query “Aconcagua 2012” refers to one specific archive entry, not to a general guide to climbing the mountain.<\/p>\n

Where to start planning after reading the archive<\/h3>\n

Open the full list of programmes, choose a duration that matches your actual high-altitude experience, and read the itinerary day by day. Then check preparation, insurance, equipment, season and the list of included services separately. Where an old post and a current product page disagree, the current programme takes precedence.<\/p>\n

That way the archive does its job: it shows the history of the destination and the real voice of an expedition member, without standing in for the contractual and operational terms of a new trip.<\/p>\n

If your own guide or club is leading the route, the ground services can be booked separately.
