Simply running a fast ten kilometres is not enough. The body has to cope with long moderate effort, cold, an early start and recovery at altitude.

When to start

Someone who does not train regularly should allow several months. The load builds gradually; trying to make up for lost time in the last fortnight raises the risk of injury and does not build endurance.

The aerobic base

The foundation is walking on varied ground, running, cycling or skiing at a pace you can hold for a long time. Add one long outing a week. As you adapt, use a pack, but do not start straight in at expedition weight.

Strength and stability

squats and lunges with controlled technique;

step-ups on to a box and stair climbing;

work for the hamstrings and calves;

core work and carrying a moderate weight;

balance on one leg.

Strength work supplements the walking rather than replacing it. Leave recovery days.

Technical skills

Before the trip it is worth learning to fit and adjust crampons, to move on them uphill and down, to perform a self-arrest, to use a harness and to understand the calls used on a rope. Choose a practice slope where an uncontrolled slide is not possible, and work under an instructor.

Boots and equipment

Break your boots in beforehand and test them with crampons. Do one long training day in the socks, insoles and pack that will go on the route. A new set-up that feels fine for ten minutes in the shop can rub after a few hours.

The last two weeks

Cut the volume, keep the sessions easy and protect your sleep. Do not stage a proving marathon before the flight. Check your documents, your insurance, your kit list and the state of any medication you take regularly.

Altitude

Training beforehand does not replace acclimatisation. Good fitness lets you move more economically, but altitude sickness is possible in a trained person. Do not plan medication without a doctor, and tell your guide about symptoms.

Checking yourself

whether you can walk for several hours without your pace collapsing;

whether you recover by the next day;

whether you move confidently in boots and crampons;

whether you understand the calls used on a rope;

whether you are ready to turn round without an argument.

For the requirements of the particular route, see the programme for Kazbek from the south. A general training plan can be adapted from the section on preparing for high-altitude climbs.

An example of a weekly rhythm

This is not a personal medical plan but a principle for spreading the load. Two or three days go to easy aerobic work, one to strength training, one to a longer outing and the rest to recovery and mobility. Hard days are not stacked back to back as a matter of routine. Every few weeks the volume comes down for a while.

If persistent pain appears, the session stops and a specialist assesses the cause. Preparing for a summit does not justify ignoring an injury.

Training the ascent and the descent

Running in town does not fully prepare you for rock and snow. Use stairs, hills and safe paths. On the way down, control your stride and the position of your knee, because it is the eccentric loading that most often causes heavy fatigue. Test poles beforehand, adjusting the length for going up and for coming down.

The pack

Check the actual weight of personal kit given in the programme. Start with a light pack and add weight gradually. There is no need to train with excessive weight “just in case”: it raises the impact loading and does not teach economical movement.

The skills day

The practice takes place on a safe snow or ice slope. Each participant should be able to fit crampons with gloves on, walk on all the points, turn round, use an ice axe and hold their spacing on a rope. Watching a video once is not enough.

Being ready in your head

Cold, darkness and a slow pace can irritate even a strong athlete. Practise long monotonous effort without racing. Accept in advance that the guide’s decision to turn round is not debated on the slope and does not turn the trip into a failure.

Recovery and food

Sleep and regular meals are part of the preparation. Do not try out a new diet before the trip. During training, test the snacks that are easy to eat in the cold and that do not upset your stomach.

The check a month out

Four weeks before, nobody tries to raise their fitness sharply. What gets tested is the long outing, the technique, the footwear and how you recover the next day. If the base is not there, moving the date is more sensible than making up for it with a short programme or with medication.

Medicine. If you have a chronic condition, show your doctor the altitude plan and how long the effort lasts. Do not hide regular medication from the organiser if missing a dose or its side effects could affect the group. Medical clearance does not replace training, and training does not replace a consultation.

A test trip. A few weeks out, do two consecutive walking days with a moderate amount of ascent. The aim is not a record but a check on recovery, footwear, food and the pack. If your technique falls apart on the second day, or pain appears, the plan is adjusted before the trip.

The mark of a good plan. After most sessions you can still work and sleep normally, and your numbers improve gradually. Constant exhaustion, insomnia and declining performance are not heroism but a sign that there is too little recovery. A well-prepared participant arrives healthy rather than worn out.

Preparing for Kazbek has three parts: the endurance for several days of walking, the strength to go up and down with a pack, and the technical skills for the glacier.
