The cable car and the huts on the south side run to their own timetables, there is a wide choice of dates, and the days are longer than in winter. But high up there is still frost, wind, glacier and the risk of altitude sickness. Elbrus in summer is easier to organise than in winter, but it does not turn into ordinary trekking.

June, July or August

June

Early in the summer there is usually more of the winter snow left on the route. How the snowpack behaves depends on the particular year: fresh snow can slow a group down, and the daytime sun softens the surface. The flow of climbers builds up gradually.

July

The middle month of the season offers the widest choice of dates. Queues and a heavy flow of groups are possible on the popular sections. An early start and good discipline matter especially: one person running late affects the whole summit plan.

August

The season continues, but after warm spells patches of hard ice and crevasses show up more strongly on some routes. This is not a rule that holds for every day; the guide judges the actual conditions.

What the weather is like in summer

It can be warm in Terskol while temperatures at the huts and on the summit are below freezing with a strong wind. A thunderstorm or heavy cloud can arrive quickly. Check the forecast for several altitudes, and do not carry the valley temperature over to summit day. There is more in the article on the weather on Elbrus.

Do you need to acclimatise

Yes. The cable car takes you high very quickly, but the body adapts more slowly than the transport moves. A sensible programme alternates gaining height, training days out and recovery. Being in good athletic shape helps you keep walking, but it does not rule out altitude sickness.

What to take

mountain boots that are compatible with crampons;

crampons, an ice axe, a helmet and a harness, as listed by the programme;

layered clothing and a windproof, waterproof shell set;

warm mitts and spare gloves;

goggles or glasses, and sun protection for your skin;

a head torch with spare batteries;

personal medication agreed with your doctor.

Do not buy everything off some random general list. The boot model, the insulation and the technical set depend on which side of the mountain you are on and on where you will be sleeping.

How to prepare physically

Spend several months building aerobic endurance: long walks with height gain, running or cycling at a conversational pace, and work for the legs and core. The load should build up gradually. Before you travel it is worth doing one long training session in the boots and clothing you plan to use on the mountain. There is a training plan on the Elbrus training page.

How to choose a summer programme

Compare more than the number of days and the price. Check the acclimatisation, the group size, the number of guides on summit day, the accommodation, the instruction, the snowcat, the reserve day and the turnaround rules. For a first attempt people most often choose the classic ascent from the south. All the current options are gathered under “Climbing Elbrus”.

Summer is the main season for climbing Elbrus.
