For most travellers the most rewarding option is to walk the Nepalese side of the Khumbu valley: the route leads through Sherpa settlements to base camp, and the viewpoints along the way open up Everest and the neighbouring eight-thousanders. It is worth separating two different goals: standing at base camp, and actually seeing the summit. From the southern camp the top of Everest is far less striking than it is from certain viewpoints.

Where Everest is best seen

The classic viewpoint on the high trek is Kala Patthar. It gives a panorama of the Everest massif, the Khumbu glacier, Lhotse, Nuptse and Pumori. The climb takes place at considerable altitude, so it is scheduled only after gradual acclimatisation and in suitable weather.

You can catch sight of the summit earlier as well. Around Namche Bazaar and on the stages that follow there are places where Everest appears in the gaps between the surrounding peaks. Exactly how much you see depends on cloud cover, the time of day and the state of the trail. No route can guarantee a clear panorama at a pre-arranged hour.

The trek to base camp

The trek to Everest Base Camp begins once you reach the Khumbu region and takes considerably more than a day. The trail passes through Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche and the high settlements beyond. The itinerary has to build in days for adapting to altitude: gaining height quickly raises the risk of altitude sickness and does not make the trip any more efficient.

Base camp itself is a point on the route beside the glacier, not a viewing platform with a postcard view of the summit. In spring, during the expedition season, it looks quite different from how it looks in autumn or winter. The trekking route does not include going into the Khumbu icefall, and it gives no right to enter expedition working areas without permission.

Can you see Everest without the long trek

Nepal does offer shorter sightseeing trips and flight-based formats, but these depend far more on the weather and leave less time to take the mountains in. A scenic flight is no substitute for the trek, and helicopter logistics at altitude have their limits and should never be used as a way around acclimatisation. Conditions, permits and whether a flight can actually go ahead need to be confirmed for the specific date.

The Tibetan side offers a different angle and road access to the northern base camp, though entry and permit rules can change. The Nepalese route is usually easier to fit into an independent international trip, but here too you need valid national park permits and local registration documents.

When to go

The main trekking windows in the Khumbu normally fall in spring and autumn. Spring brings warmer weather and the start of the expedition season; in autumn, after the monsoon, travellers more often count on settled visibility. That is a seasonal pattern, not a forecast. Rain, snow, wind and flight delays are possible on any trip.

What preparation is needed

the stamina for several consecutive days of walking;

broken-in trekking boots and clothing for sharp swings in temperature;

a flexible time buffer for weather and transport;

insurance that covers trekking at the actual altitude of the route, and evacuation;

a willingness to give up a viewpoint if symptoms of altitude sickness appear.

Before the trip it is worth reading up on choosing trekking boots and mountain insurance. Medication is no substitute for a steady ascent profile and proper medical advice.

Which to choose

If your goal is precisely to see Everest and to live through a full-scale Himalayan journey, choose the complete trek with acclimatisation and a climb to a panoramic viewpoint. If time is short, discuss a shorter sightseeing format while understanding its weather limitations. A comparison of the current options is gathered in the article “Trekking to Everest: which programme to choose”.

An attempt on the summit is a different product in terms of both requirements and duration: see the separate Everest climbing programme.

Official sources

Nepal Tourism Board: the Everest region

UNESCO: Sagarmatha National Park

Worth reading next

A private helicopter tour to Everest

You do not have to join a summit expedition to see Everest.
