How long it takes today depends on where you start, on road logistics and on any side trips, which is why the distance quoted in an old guidebook does not describe every programme.

How the route works

The way climbs gradually along the Marsyangdi valley, passes through the Manang area and then leads to the high nights before the Thorong La. Beyond the pass the group descends to Muktinath. Some programmes add Tilicho Lake or continue further; others use vehicles on the sections where a road has appeared.

The Thorong La pass

Pass day usually starts early. The main difficulty is altitude, cold, wind and a long climb, not technical scrambling. Snow can slow the group down and close the route. The decision to set off is taken on the basis of the state of the group and the conditions on the day.

Acclimatising in Manang

The day in the Manang area is used not as a passive halt but for adapting and for a check walk. The principle of climbing higher and sleeping lower helps you judge how you feel. Being fit does not make it safe to remove the acclimatisation day.

When to go

The main windows usually fall in spring and autumn. In spring it is the temperature and the flowering that change; in autumn people more often count on settled visibility. Snow on the pass, rain and transport delays are possible in any season, though. Winter and monsoon versions need a plan of their own.

Lodges and food

There are lodges along the popular line, but the standard of rooms, heating, showers, charging and the phone signal changes with altitude. The higher you sleep, the less choice there is. You cannot count on city internet or the same menu every day.

Preparation

long walks several days in a row;

training that includes height gain;

trekking boots that are properly broken in;

clothing in layers and a warm set for the pass;

insurance for the altitude the route actually reaches;

time in hand for weather and transport.

Permits

Registration requirements and the rules on being accompanied in Nepal can change. Check them before your trip with the organiser and with the Nepal Tourism Board; an old blog post is not a valid permit.

How to choose a programme

Compare the number of walking days and acclimatisation days, the altitude of each night, whether Tilicho is included, how you return and how the guide works. The route with the lake and the classic circuit answer different aims. Current Nepal programmes are gathered in the section on travel in Nepal.

The official source

Nepal Tourism Board — current information on travel and on the rules; the particular permits are confirmed for the dates of the tour.

What the road has changed

The historic trek started lower down and took longer. As the road network has grown it has become possible to drive further in and to leave more quickly after the pass. That is convenient, but cutting out the lower days sometimes makes the height gain faster. When you compare programmes, look not only at the total length but at the altitude of each night and at where the walking begins.

The road also affects the experience: part of the old trail now runs beside traffic, and the alternative walking sections can be longer. A good programme explains where a vehicle is used and why, rather than passing off any version as “the full classic circuit”.

Tilicho: an addition, not a compulsory part

The walk out to Tilicho Lake adds days, altitude and dependence on the state of the trail. It can improve acclimatisation on a sensible schedule, but it is no automatic guarantee. After snowfall, or where the ground is dangerous, the extra section is cancelled. You should know whether the lake is included in the price or offered depending on conditions.

Altitude symptoms

Headache, nausea, loss of appetite and unusual weakness all need attention. Loss of co-ordination, confusion or breathlessness at rest are signs of a serious deterioration that call for immediate descent and medical help. A tablet must not be used to mask symptoms for the sake of the pass.

What to carry in your day sack

Even when your main baggage is carried for you, you still keep water, insulation, a waterproof shell, gloves, sunglasses, a torch, a first-aid kit, documents and something to eat. A porter may walk at a different pace, so you must not hand over anything you need before the next night’s stop.

Money and extra costs

On the route, charging, showers, phone use, drinks and some changes of transport may be paid for separately. You need cash with something in reserve, but exact sums go out of date quickly. Ask the organiser for a current briefing note rather than relying on prices from an old trip report.

Who the route does not suit

The circuit is not the best choice for someone who has never walked several days in a row, is not ready for simple lodges, or has medical limitations they have not discussed with a doctor. A lower Nepali trek, or a programme with less altitude and the option of finishing early, may be the alternative.

Phone signal and electricity. The higher the route goes, the less predictable the mobile network, wifi and charging become. Tell the people at home that silence does not necessarily mean something has happened, and agree check-in dates with them. Keep your battery warm and your important documents available offline.

Hygiene and water. The organiser should describe how drinking water is obtained. Do not rely on taste or on how clear it looks. In cold lodges damp things dry slowly, so spare socks and sensible packing matter more than extra town clothes. Wash your hands, or use a suitable product, before you eat.

After the pass. A sharp descent reduces the strain of altitude, but it does not remove tiredness or the risk of injury. Do not plan an overnight drive straight after a long day. If the route ends early because of weather or health, that does not make the trip a failure: the part you walked safely remains a real experience.

The current route: the dates, the length and what is included are published in the main programme for the Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake trek.

The trek around Annapurna is a high-altitude route in Nepal that links valleys with different climates and crosses the Thorong La pass.
