It leads through Lukla, the Dudh Koshi valley, Namche Bazaar, Sherpa villages and high-altitude lodges to Base Camp at 5364 m. In the classic Mountain Guide itinerary the climb to Kala Patthar, 5645 m, is a goal in its own right: this is the point that gives the fullest view of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Pumori and the Khumbu glacier.

Under normal conditions the route calls for no climbing skills, crampons, ice axe or harness. The difficulties lie elsewhere: altitude, a walking stage every day, cold, rocky trails, long descents and accumulated fatigue. A well-prepared beginner can complete it, provided the itinerary does not cut the acclimatisation short and provided the trekker trains in advance and is honest about their health.

What the Everest trek actually is

The trek follows the southern, Nepalese side of Everest. After arriving in Kathmandu the group travels to Lukla and starts walking. The trail first drops down to Phakding, then climbs to Namche Bazaar, the main settlement of the Khumbu and the first important acclimatisation point. Higher up, the forest gradually gives way to open high-mountain terrain, and the overnight stops rise in turn to Pangboche, Pheriche, Lobuche and Gorak Shep.

Everest Base Camp is not a viewpoint with an open panorama of the summit. The terrain and the Nuptse wall partly hide Everest, which is why the classic itinerary includes an early-morning walk up Kala Patthar. This is the highest point of the route and a physically demanding stage in its own right, coming after the visit to the camp.

It is important to distinguish between the trek and an ascent of Everest. The trek ends in the Base Camp area and does not go onto the Khumbu icefall. Members of a summit expedition use technical equipment, high camps and an entirely different level of preparation.

The classic route day by day

The current classic Mountain Guide itinerary runs to 14 days. The sequence of overnight stops matters more than the formal distance covered: it is what limits the rate of ascent and gives the body time to adapt.

Stage

Altitude

Purpose

Kathmandu

As per the itinerary

Group meeting, equipment check and preparation for the mountain section

Lukla to Phakding

2860 to 2610 m

A first short stage and a gentle start to the route

Phakding to Namche Bazaar

3440 m

The first substantial ascent

Namche Bazaar

3440 m

An extra acclimatisation day

Pangboche to Pheriche

3928 to 4240 m

A gradual move out of the forest zone into the high mountains

Lobuche

4940 m

Preparation for the walk to Base Camp

Gorak Shep to Base Camp

5164 to 5364 m

Reaching the main goal of the trek and returning to sleep

Kala Patthar

5645 m

The highest point and the viewpoint of the route

Descent via Dingboche and Namche

Losing height

Returning to Lukla while gradually recovering

The itinerary brings you back through villages you already know. On the way down you are better adapted to the altitude, but fatigue builds up and the load on your knees stays considerable. The return leg is no formality.

Why the day in Namche Bazaar matters

After Phakding the route climbs quickly to 3440 m. The extra day in Namche Bazaar limits any further gain in altitude and lets the guide see how everyone is responding. An acclimatisation day does not mean doing nothing at all: the leader decides on the walk and the effort involved according to the state of the group.

Even on a well-judged schedule you may get a headache, lose your appetite, sleep poorly or feel unusually tired. Do not hide feeling unwell from the guide or try to make up for it by going faster. If the symptoms get worse, the safe decision may be to stop gaining height or to descend. The subject is covered in more detail in the Mountain Guide article on preventing altitude sickness.

How hard the route is, and whether it suits a beginner

The classic trek can be your first journey in the Himalaya, but it should not be your first serious physical effort. You need to prepare in advance for walking day after day, for long ascents and descents, for staircase-like sections, rocky ground and several days spent above 4000 m.

No mountaineering experience is needed. Hiking experience is desirable, because it helps you judge your pace, your clothing, how much you drink and how you recover. If you have none, it is worth doing several long walks in a row with a day pack before the trip. Choosing a first route is covered in more detail in the article “Your first trek in Nepal”.

The trek is not for anyone who expects willpower to make up for a lack of preparation. Altitude takes no notice of sporting ambition, and a fast pace does not speed up acclimatisation.

Lodges, food and baggage

On the walking section you sleep in mountain lodges. These are small guesthouses, not hotels of a uniform standard. The higher the village, the simpler the rooms, the washing facilities, the heating, the device charging and the phone signal. Which lodges are used depends on availability on your group’s dates.

On the basic package of the classic itinerary, meals during the trek are paid for by each trekker from the lodge menu. Breakfasts in Kathmandu are included. A special menu at every high-altitude stop cannot be guaranteed, so tell us about dietary restrictions before booking.

A personal porter is not part of the basic price. Even with a porter booked, you carry a day pack with water, insulation, protection from rain and sun, a first-aid kit, your documents and everything you need before the next overnight stop. The practical side of daily life on the trail is covered on the page about lodges, food and communications in Nepal.

The flight to Lukla and spare days for weather

Mountain aviation is one of the variables of this route. The departure airport, the road transfer and the schedule are all confirmed before the trip. Flights operate only in suitable conditions, so mist, cloud or wind can change the departure time.

On the classic itinerary, domestic flights and the transfers between Kathmandu and the departure airport are not part of the basic price. Their current cost and the baggage limits are confirmed separately. Buy your international ticket for after the trek with a buffer agreed with Mountain Guide.

Which Everest itinerary to choose

The Mountain Guide website offers four formats. They differ not only in price but in effort, route and the services included.

The classic 14-day trek: Base Camp, Kala Patthar and steady acclimatisation

The 15-day route via Gokyo: Base Camp, Kala Patthar, the Cho La pass, the Gokyo lakes and Gokyo Ri

The short 10-day itinerary: a fast format with a helicopter leg after Base Camp, which assumes you are already acclimatised

The 14-day VIP itinerary: the classic route with a wider range of services included

A detailed comparison of all the options is published in the article “Trekking to Everest: which itinerary to choose”. If your aim is to see more of the Khumbu and to walk a circuit, read our separate account of the trek via the Gokyo lakes and the Cho La pass.

What the price covers

The services included depend on the itinerary you choose. The classic version provides a Russian-speaking Mountain Guide leader for groups of four or more, a Nepalese guide, airport transfers on arrival and departure in Kathmandu, two nights in a 4-star hotel with breakfast, lodge accommodation, a group first-aid kit and a satellite navigation device, a duffel bag and the permits for the confirmed route.

Paid for separately are the international flight, domestic flights and transfers to the departure airport for Lukla, the visa, insurance, meals during the trek, a personal porter, single occupancy, tips, and any costs arising from delays or from a forced change to the itinerary. Before paying, read the description of the exact package you have chosen rather than assuming that the terms of one itinerary apply to another.

Insurance and safety

The classic route requires medical insurance covering high-altitude trekking to at least 5645 m, search and rescue, and emergency helicopter evacuation. Holding a policy does not guarantee that a helicopter will fly immediately: evacuation depends on the weather, visibility, aircraft availability and the decisions of the rescue services.

The guide decides whether the route continues. Reaching Base Camp and Kala Patthar is not guaranteed if the weather, the state of the trail or someone’s condition makes going on unsafe.

How to prepare for the trip

Choose an itinerary to match your real experience at altitude, not just the length of your holiday

Build the endurance, and the legs, for several days of walking in a row

Check your trekking boots, waterproofs, insulation and sleeping bag before you fly

Take out insurance with the right altitude and the right activity named

Book international tickets with a buffer for delays to mountain flights

Tell us about medical conditions, dietary restrictions and any medication you take before booking

For seasons, paperwork, equipment and everyday conditions, the best sources are the current Mountain Guide pages: seasons in Nepal, documents and visas and preparing for a trek.

The essentials before you book

The trek to Everest Base Camp is not a technical ascent, but it is a full high-altitude route with a maximum point of 5645 m. The classic itinerary suits a well-prepared beginner, provided the acclimatisation is left intact and you are ready to give up the goal if the guide decides so. Choose between the classic route, Gokyo, the short itinerary and the VIP version according to your experience at altitude, the services included and the effort you can take on, not according to a photograph or the smallest number of days.

Trekking to Everest Base Camp: a 14-day route, acclimatisation, altitudes, lodges, difficulty,
