The Everest, Annapurna, Manaslu, Makalu and Kanchenjunga regions differ in their logistics, their altitude profiles, the standard of their lodges and what they ask of the walker. It is better to choose a programme by your experience and the time you have than by a photograph of the main summit.

Everest: infrastructure you can understand, and real altitude

The classic way to base camp begins after the flight to Lukla and runs through Namche Bazaar. It works as a first serious Himalayan trek if you are well prepared, but it remains a high-altitude route lasting many days. The version by way of Gokyo adds a second valley and the high Cho La pass, so it calls for more in reserve.

The basic version is published on the page for the trek to Everest Base Camp. The shortened programme and the VIP format change the logistics or the service, not the physical laws of altitude.

Annapurna: a circular route and a changing landscape

The Annapurna Circuit is valued for the way it moves between valleys, villages and natural zones. Its main altitude hurdle is the Thorong La pass. Versions with Tilicho Lake add a section of their own and should not be treated as a free extension of the ordinary circuit. What you need to compare is the altitude of each night and the days you have in hand, not just the total length.

Manaslu: remoteness and simpler living

The Manaslu Circuit goes around the massif by way of the Budhi Gandaki valley and the Larke La pass. There are fewer visitors here, but the infrastructure is thinner and you depend more on overland logistics. This route suits someone with experience of several walking days in a row and a calm attitude to simple lodges.

Makalu and Kanchenjunga: routes for the experienced trekker

The Barun valley and the Kanchenjunga areas call for more self-sufficiency. The nights may be simpler, the drives longer and the chance of replacing a service quickly smaller. People choose these programmes for the remoteness and the scale of the area, not as a cheap substitute for Everest.

How to compare programmes

The length of the walking section and the number of consecutive walking days.

The altitude of every night, not only the highest point.

Whether there are acclimatisation days and spare days.

Lodges or tented camps, meals and baggage carriage.

Internal flights, road transfers and the margin before your international flight.

The experience this particular ground actually requires.

The official rules on permits and on being accompanied should be checked before the trip, because the requirements can change. A general list of the destinations currently offered is gathered on the page for treks and climbs in Nepal.

Preparation

Spend several months building aerobic stamina, walk on rough ground with a day sack and test your footwear on long descents. Your insurance has to match the altitude and the activity involved; the final cover is confirmed by the insurer. Altitude symptoms must not be hidden for the sake of the group’s schedule.

The best trek in Nepal is neither the most famous nor the longest, but the one that matches your experience, your time and your readiness for the particular way of living it involves.

A lodge trek or camping

On the popular routes the group usually sleeps in lodges, but the standard of the room, the heating, the shower, the charging and the phone signal all change with altitude. In remote areas some of the nights may be spent in tents or in very basic huts. Before you pay, do not ask whether it will be comfortable; ask exactly where the group sleeps and which services are guaranteed.

A porter reduces the weight you carry, but does not carry your personal day kit. You keep your water, insulation, waterproof, documents and any medicines you need with you. Baggage weight limits are checked separately for internal flights and for carrying services.

Season and spare time

Spring and autumn are regarded as the main periods for many Nepali treks, but no particular weather is guaranteed. Cloud, rain and the state of the passes can change the plan. You need spare time not only on the trail: flights to Lukla and other internal flights depend on conditions.

Do not book an international flight tight against your planned return from the mountains. Compare programmes by the real margin they leave, not by the smallest number of days off work. The more complicated the internal logistics, the more an attempt to save one day will cost you.

A quick test of your choice. If a programme looks suitable only because it has fewer days in it, count the walking stages and the altitudes of the nights again. Cutting out transport or the return leg does not always reduce the physical effort.

Before you pay, get the final programme, the list of services included and the list of personal equipment. Phrases like “lodge trek” and “suitable for beginners” should be spelled out in concrete conditions.

Trekking in Nepal is not a single route to “the Himalaya in general”.
