A reading in Terskol does not describe conditions at a high hut, and a forecast for a cable-car station is not the same as a forecast for the summit at 5642 m. So what you need in order to prepare is not one average figure but a forecast broken down by altitude, and enough clothing in reserve for the weather to turn.

Why the temperature changes with altitude

Air usually cools as you climb, but the actual difference is never constant. It is affected by passing fronts, by inversions, by the sun and by the terrain. On the south route you go from the conditions of an inhabited valley to the glacier zone in a single day. Even in summer, sub-zero temperatures, snow and strong wind are all possible high up.

What it feels like in the wind

For your hands, your face and how cold you get overall, air temperature is not the only thing that matters. Wind speeds up heat loss, so a nominal −10 °C in still air and the same figure in strong gusts call for very different reserves of protection. “Felt temperature” helps you judge the risk of getting cold, but it does not replace figures for wind speed and precipitation.

Temperature by season

Summer

June, July and August are the main season for the classic ascents. It can be warm in the valley while it stays below freezing overnight and in the morning at the huts and above. Once the sun is up the surface warms quickly, the snow softens and the state of particular sections changes.

Spring and autumn

In May and in the autumn months you usually need more insulation in reserve. The days are shorter, and fresh snow combined with wind can make the going harder. The name of the season on the calendar tells you nothing about whether a particular route is open.

Winter

A winter ascent is a separate undertaking, with consistently low temperatures, a short day and a high price for mistakes. A summer clothing list and ordinary trekking experience are not enough for it.

Which forecast points to compare

Terskol, or wherever the group is staying;

the level of the cable-car station and of the high hut;

the altitude of the expected turnaround or of the summit;

wind speed and gusts;

precipitation, cloud and the chance of thunderstorms;

how the forecast is changing, rather than one screenshot taken a week before.

How to dress

A layered system works: the base layer moves moisture away, the insulating layer holds warmth, and the outer layer keeps out wind and precipitation. For the summit you take extra insulation for the stops, warm mitts, spare gloves, face protection and eye protection. The particular set depends on the season and the programme; check it against the operator’s list and against the article on how to dress for Elbrus.

How to decide whether to go

The forecast is one element of the decision. The guide weighs it against the visibility, the state of the snow and ice, the pace of the group and the actual weather. If conditions have gone beyond safe limits, the day out is postponed or called off. You should not be going by the temperature in an app alone.

To plan the season, read the detailed article on the weather on Elbrus and on choosing when to climb. The programmes currently running are in the Elbrus climbing section.

To plan your trip: set the conditions at altitude against the current programme for climbing Elbrus from the south; the final clothing list is checked against the season and the actual forecast.

The temperature on Elbrus depends not only on the month but on the altitude, the time of day, the cloud and the wind.
