The classic ascent of Elbrus calls for an ordinary mountaineering ice axe, not a tool built for vertical ice climbing. It is used on snow and ice terrain and forms part of the mandatory kit for the nine-day programme on the south side<\/a>. Simply owning an ice axe does not make you safer if you cannot hold it, carry it and use it on the guide’s instruction.<\/p>\n

A classic axe and a technical tool are not the same thing<\/h2>\n

Manufacturers draw a line between models made for glacier travel and classic mountaineering, models for technical alpinism, and models for ice climbing. They differ in the shape of the shaft, the geometry of the pick, their strength and how comfortably they work on a particular kind of terrain. On a standard route there is no reason to reach automatically for the most aggressive and most expensive tool.<\/p>\n

The type you need is set by the demands of the programme. Confirm the model before you buy, especially if you already own an axe from another trip or one meant for ski touring. A compact tool can be convenient on skis yet far too short for a different way of moving.<\/p>\n

How the length is chosen<\/h2>\n

Length depends on your height, your body proportions, the steepness of the terrain and what the model is designed to do. A one-size formula based on a single height figure takes none of that into account. An axe that is too long is awkward and can snag; one that is too short forces you to alter your body position and works less well as support on gentler ground.<\/p>\n

The best approach is to give the organiser your height, the exact programme and the model you are considering. With rental gear the length is fitted on the spot. Once it is fitted, check how the axe works alongside your backpack, your gloves and your harness.<\/p>\n

Leash, cord and harness<\/h2>\n

The current kit list for the nine-day programme on the south side specifies a classic ice axe with accessory cord 5-6 mm in diameter and 2-3 metres long to connect it to the harness. That is the requirement of one specific programme, not an instruction for rigging it yourself.<\/p>\n

The guide checks the method of attachment, the knots and the length. A badly rigged cord can get in the way as you walk, catch on your crampons, or fail to behave the way you expect. Do not let a video you happened to find replace the proper check, and do not make changes at the last moment.<\/p>\n

The skills you practise before summit day<\/h2>\n

In the training session you learn to carry the axe safely, to change hands when the direction changes, to hold your spacing and to react when you lose your balance. The practice takes place on a suitable training slope under an instructor’s supervision. No written description can replace that session.<\/p>\n

It matters that you train in the boots, crampons, gloves and clothing you will be wearing on summit day. A thick mitt changes your grip, and a new backpack restricts shoulder movement. Every incompatibility is better found before the night-time start.<\/p>\n
