/>

Climbing Kazbek and Elbrus — a combined ten-day programme that takes in two of the best-known summits of the Caucasus in a single trip. Participants first climb Kazbek from the Georgian side to 5033 m, then travel to Russia and climb the western summit of Elbrus, 5642 m, by the classic southern route.

Kazbek and Elbrus combine conveniently into one programme. The acclimatisation on Kazbek is done mainly on foot, without cable cars, and includes long stages and nights at altitude. Because of that, by the time the Elbrus stage begins participants already have good high-altitude acclimatisation and can complete the second half of the programme without extra preparation days.

Even so, an ascent of Kazbek does not guarantee an easy climb on Elbrus. Both summits demand good fitness, the right equipment and a readiness for sustained work at altitude. Whether the group sets off and whether each climb continues depends on the weather, the state of the route and how the participants are feeling.

Kazbek is climbed from the Georgian side by the classic route through the meteorological station. The main accommodation is in a guest house or hotel in Kazbegi and in the mountain hut. When the meteorological station is busy, some of the nights may be spent in tents beside it.

After Kazbek the group moves to the southern slope of Elbrus. Here the cable cars and the high mountain hut are used, which makes it quick to set up the second stage and to concentrate on the western summit of Elbrus.

A Mountain Guide team leader accompanies the group throughout the programme, and on the Kazbek and Elbrus summit days mountain guides work at a strict ratio of 1 guide to 3 participants.

A private departure for your own group can be arranged on convenient dates subject to guide availability, with the pace and the length of the acclimatisation adapted, the accommodation changed and the number of guides matched to the composition of the group. The Elbrus stage can be extended to two summits, to a traverse or to the Cross of Elbrus route.

Important

Participants carry the food for the high-altitude section themselves. This is a standard feature of how ascents of Elbrus from the south are organised. The food travels up by cable car with the group and is moved on by snowcat; it has to be carried by hand only over short sections of no more than 20 m.

The programme runs on the territory of Georgia and of Russia, so participants must check in advance the entry, exit and border-crossing requirements that apply to their citizenship

Kazbek is climbed from the Georgian side by the route through the meteorological station

Tents beside the meteorological station are used only as a fallback when there is no room in the hut

On the Kazbek and Elbrus summit days a ratio of 1 guide to 3 participants is observed

Any departure from the hut on summit day counts as a summit attempt

The final decision to set off, to continue or to turn around is taken by the lead guide, in the light of the weather, the state of the route and how the participants are feeling

[322,320,332,330,333

post-15054","product","type-product","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","product_cat-322","product_cat-climbing","product_cat-332","product_cat-climb-elbrus","product_cat-kazbek","first","instock","shipping-taxable","purchasable","product-type-simple

<!--
