Unlike mountaineering, trekking does not usually involve ascents of summits, though in a number of cases that is possible. A number of tours (Europe, sometimes Nepal, Patagonia, Tanzania, Uganda and so on) let you travel in comfort from lodge to lodge, sometimes even eating from a menu, while others take place in completely wild conditions, where you have to pitch tents, cook (either yourself or with someone whose job that is) and sometimes even find the route. Most treks in the world do not require you to carry a heavy rucksack – in many places there are porters or pack animals.

There are several kinds of trekking:

Hiking – the most widespread kind of trekking, in which travellers walk a set route through forest or alpine-meadow country without especially difficult terrain.

Mountain trekking – walking trips in the mountains, where travellers have to cross passes. other forms of mountain terrain, and considerable changes of altitude in a day.

Winter trekking – trekking in winter conditions, when travellers walk over snowfields and glaciers.

Expedition trekking – trekking over long distances, which can last several weeks and calls for serious preparation and equipment.

Every mountain trek has its own character, depending on the climate, the terrain, the length and the degree of self-sufficiency, and it calls for the preparation and equipment to match, so before starting any trek you should study the route carefully and prepare for the journey.

Trekking to Everest Base Camp is not the easiest physical challenge, but even so it suits any healthy person able to walk for several hours at a stretch.
