They run along opposite sides of the massif and differ in altitude, in length, in the character of the walking and in what they demand of acclimatisation.

This page is here to help you choose a route; it does not replace the tour page itself. Exact dates, what is included, the length, the altitudes of the overnight stops and the requirements for participants all need to be checked on the relevant page: the Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake or Annapurna Base Camp.

The geography of the massif, the differences between its peaks and what makes the region distinctive are covered separately in the article “Annapurna in Nepal”. Here we keep to the practical comparison of the trekking programmes.

The Circuit or Annapurna Base Camp: a short comparison

Criterion

Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho

Annapurna Base Camp

The main idea

Cross several distinct natural zones, see the northern side of the massif and Tilicho Lake, and go over a high pass

Walk into Annapurna’s high mountain amphitheatre and sleep beside the southern base camp

The altitude challenge

Tilicho Lake, 4920 m, and the Thorong La pass, 5416 m

A gradual climb to the base camp at about 4100 m

Character of the route

A longer stretch at altitude, open valleys, stony slopes and one long day over the pass

Forest paths, many stone steps, a gorge and the climb up into the mountain cirque

Who it suits

Participants in good physical shape who are ready for several days above 4000 m

Active beginners who have done the training, and anyone who wants a shorter first Himalayan trek

What you choose it for

Variety of landscape and a high pass

Close views of the peaks and a single coherent route to one base camp

The comparison shows the general logic. It is not a promise of particular weather, of the state of the trail, or of reaching the highest point. Decisions on the route are made by the guide, allowing for how the group is doing and for the actual conditions.

The Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake

The circuit links the Marsyangdi valley with the Kali Gandaki valley. The walking climbs gradually through the settlements of the Manang district, branches off to Tilicho Lake and rejoins the main line before the Thorong La. As the trail gains height, damp forested valleys give way to a drier high-mountain landscape.

Tilicho Lake is a side trip in its own right. The approach crosses stony slopes where it particularly matters to keep the group together and follow the guide’s instructions. Whether the outing goes ahead depends on the weather and the state of the trail. The fact that the lake is in the programme does not oblige the group to press on in dangerous conditions. The altitude profile and the preparation are set out in detail in the article The Annapurna Circuit: Tilicho, Manang and the Thorong La.

The Thorong La, at 5416 m, is the highest point and the longest day. An early start reduces the risk of being on the pass too late, but it does nothing about the cold, the wind, the body’s reaction to altitude or the long descent down the far side. Acclimatisation in Manang and a sequence of overnight stops prepare the body for the pass, but they do not guarantee that everyone will react the same way.

People choose this option for the length of the journey and for the different parts of Nepal it crosses. It suits anyone ready not only for the views but for day after day of effort, plain lodge living, early starts and the need to keep something in reserve to the end of the long descents.

The trek to Annapurna Base Camp

The route to the base camp runs up the southern side of the massif into a gorge that narrows steadily and opens out into a natural high-mountain amphitheatre. The goal here is not a pass but a steady approach to Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre and the neighbouring peaks.

The Mountain Guide programme goes by way of Poon Hill, then Tadapani, Chhomrong and the settlements in the upper part of the route. From Machhapuchhre Base Camp the group climbs to Annapurna Base Camp. On the way back the route comes down to Jhinu. The full sequence, the length of each stage and what is included need to be read on the tour page.

The maximum altitude is lower than on the Circuit, but the route is no stroll. Stone staircases, damp stretches of forest, walking every day and long descents put real strain on knees and feet. Even at around 4100 m the symptoms of altitude sickness are possible, so participants must tell the guide about any change in how they feel. The route stage by stage and what is expected of participants are set out in Annapurna Base Camp: the route and how to prepare.

Base camp is often the easier first route in Nepal to picture: the objective is clear, the high section is shorter, and no technical climbing equipment is needed. It still calls for systematic training, boots that are properly broken in and the ability to walk several days in a row.

How to choose a route by experience and time

Choose the Annapurna Circuit if you want to see several natural and cultural zones, are ready for a longer stretch at altitude and regard a pass above 5000 m as the main objective.

Choose Annapurna Base Camp if close views of the massif matter more to you, along with a single clear objective and a gentler introduction to Himalayan altitude without crossing the Thorong La.

If you have no previous altitude experience, the final choice is better made after an honest look at your fitness, your experience of multi-day walking, the state of your knees and how you react to height. A Russian-speaking leader from the Mountain Guide team will help you weigh these factors up before you book.

Difficulty and preparation

Both routes are completed entirely on foot. Participants need no technical climbing experience, but they do need stamina, self-reliance in day-to-day matters and a willingness to walk in rain, in cold or on a slippery trail. Training should include long walks, ascent and descent, training with a loaded rucksack and several demanding days in a row.

Test your boots on long walks before the trip. Trekking poles are especially useful on stone steps and on sustained descents. Your outer layers have to keep out rain and wind, and your warm kit has to match the high part of the programme you have chosen. The specific list is always checked against the tour page and with the guide.

Useful background reading before the trip: preparing for a trek in Nepal, preventing altitude sickness and choosing trekking boots.

Acclimatisation and safety

The altitude profile matters more than speed. Covering a stage faster than the programme allows buys no extra margin of safety. On the Circuit the decisive days are those around Manang and Tilicho and the gradual approach to the Thorong La. On the base camp route the altitude is lower, but a quick gain and each body’s own reaction still need watching.

Headache, nausea, unusual weakness, loss of coordination and a general decline must not be hidden for the sake of the objective. The guide judges how the symptoms are developing and, where necessary, changes the pace, shortens a stage or decides to go down. No point on the route matters more than getting back safely.

Season and actual conditions

The Annapurna region is walked during the main Himalayan trekking seasons, but the dates have to be chosen for the specific programme. The state of the pass, of the approach to Tilicho, of the forest paths and of the lodges all change. Before the trip Mountain Guide confirms again the route and logistics information available for the chosen dates.

Mountain weather guarantees no panoramas. Cloud, rain or snow can change both the views and the pace. A good programme leaves participants not with the promise of a perfect photograph but with a clear acclimatisation logic and a plan for conditions that turn.

How to book the right trek

Start by comparing the two full programmes, then tell Mountain Guide about your previous walks, the highest altitude you have reached, your usual pace and any limitations you have. After that you can choose the level of support and the dates, rather than bending the route around tickets you happen to have bought.

The Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake

The trek to Annapurna Base Camp

Other treks to the eight-thousanders of Nepal

Get advice on choosing a route

Related reading

In Annapurna Base Camp, say «no» to altitude sickness)

A personal account of the Annapurna Circuit

The Annapurna Circuit: an overview of the way through the different zones of the Himalaya

Trekking in the Annapurna region is not one route but several quite different journeys through the Nepali Himalaya.
