Hotels, flights and transfers are chosen around your dates, your budget and who is coming.

Get a costing for a Zanzibar extension

Zanzibar rounds off a Kilimanjaro trip well, when after the cold, the dust and the long days on foot you want a change of pace. But the island is not automatically part of the price of the mountain programme. It has to be arranged as a separate block, with confirmed internal flights, transfers, accommodation and cancellation terms.

When is the best time to go to Zanzibar

The island can be visited all year round, but the seasons are noticeable. The longer rains usually fall in March to May, and the shorter wet period in October to December. Downpours are possible even in the dry season, and clear spells in the wet one. The temperature by the ocean and the weather on the summit of Kilimanjaro are not directly connected.

If you choose May dates you have to accept both wet paths on the mountain and a higher chance of rain on the island. That does not make the trip impossible, but it affects your expectations, your choice of hotel and what you pack.

How many days to leave after the climb

The minimum length depends on the flights and on whether you want only a rest or excursions as well. One short stay is easily swallowed up by the transfers. For a longer stay it matters to check the international ticket, the validity of the visa and the insurance cover. The exact number of nights is settled in the costing rather than fixed the same way for everyone.

How to choose an area and a hotel

The beaches, the tides, the infrastructure and the distances to the airport and to Stone Town all differ around the island. Someone coming off the mountain may care more about a quiet beach and pleasant grounds than about a lively nightlife. A family needs different criteria from a group of friends or a single traveller.

Your budget and the standard of accommodation you want

A quiet area or a busy one

How you feel about the tides

Whether the hotel provides meals, and what restaurants are nearby

Whether you want excursions and walks of your own

The times of the internal and the international flights

The terms for cancelling or changing the booking

Logistics after Kilimanjaro

First the finishing date of your chosen Kilimanjaro route is fixed. Then a confirmed connection to the island section is put together. We do not promise a particular flight or transfer until the timetable, the availability and the baggage conditions have been checked.

The international departure can be planned from the mainland or from Zanzibar, depending on the ticket. A connection you book yourself has to leave enough margin for the transfer. Separate tickets carry a risk of their own: the airline on the second leg may not be responsible for a delay on the first.

Visas and documents

The official Tanzanian e-visa covers both the mainland and Zanzibar. Whether you need a visa depends on your nationality, and the requirements can change. Your passport, return ticket, insurance and health documents should be checked against official sources before you fly.

Yellow fever and malaria

Whether a yellow fever certificate is required depends above all on the country you arrive from and on a long transit through a country at risk, not on the simple fact of holidaying on Zanzibar. A route through Kenya, Uganda or another country has to be checked separately.

Discuss malaria with a doctor before the trip. Our article on malaria helps you prepare your questions, but it does not replace individual medical advice.

What to put in a separate island bag

Light clothing, and a covering set to protect against sun and insects

Swimming things and comfortable shoes

A hat and sun protection

Insect repellent

Your own first-aid kit

A waterproof case for documents and electronics

A change of clothes in your hand luggage in case a bag is delayed

Clothing appropriate away from the beach and the hotel grounds

A safari before Zanzibar

If there is enough time, you can put a safari in Tanzania between the mountain and the ocean. The trip is then built from three self-contained parts. Each needs its own dates, its own services, its own cancellation terms and its own plan for a delay.

What we confirm in the costing

The dates of the island section

The category and the specific property

The meal plan

Every transfer included

The internal flight, where one is included

The baggage terms of the confirmed ticket

The cancellation and amendment terms

The final price, only once availability has been checked

Add Zanzibar to the climb

Send us the dates, who is coming, the number of nights you want and the standard of hotel. We will put the island section together with no invented flights and no unchecked services.

Get a costing

Why Zanzibar finishes Kilimanjaro well

After several days at altitude the body needs sleep, warmth and gentle movement. Zanzibar gives you a sharp and welcome change of scale: ocean instead of volcanic scree, a hotel instead of camp routine, and several days without an alarm clock instead of a summit night.

The island should not begin with too tight a connection. Coming down from the mountain, the drive, the internal flight and checking in all take time, and a delay on any one of them can cost you the first night you have paid for. We plan the route as a whole, through to the international departure.

How many days to allow for the island

Three nights give you a short pause but leave almost nothing in hand for the weather or for excursions. Five to seven nights let you recover, see Stone Town and have full days by the sea. A longer stay suits anyone who wants diving, several parts of the island or an unhurried family format.

The number of days depends on the international ticket. Sometimes an extra night on the island is cheaper and more pleasant than an awkward connection through the mainland.

How to choose an area of Zanzibar

The north of the island is known for its more developed infrastructure and for beaches where the tides are often less noticeable. The east coast is more open and quieter, but at low tide the water can go a long way out. The south-east is interesting for its wind and its water sports, while Stone Town is there above all for the history and the atmosphere of the town.

There is no single “best beach” for everyone. A family cares about a gentle entry to the water and the catering, a couple about privacy, a photographer about the light and the character of the shore, a diver about where the centre is and when it goes out. The hotel is chosen after those questions, not from one photograph of a swimming pool.

Tides, and what a beach holiday is really like

The tides change the look of the coast twice a day. On the east coast there can be a wide stretch of water in the morning and open shallows in the afternoon. That is beautiful and interesting to walk on, but inconvenient for anyone who wants to swim at any hour.

Before choosing an area it is worth working out what matters more: swimming whenever you like, quiet, water sports, or the view at low tide. The timetable shifts every day, so a promise that “there are no tides” is not a truthful one.

When to go to Zanzibar

The island is visited all year round. The drier periods are usually easier for the beach and for excursions, but tropical rain is possible in any month. In April and May there is more rain, some small hotels close for maintenance, and the sea and the roads can affect the programme.

The May holidays are in demand all the same. If the dates are fixed, choose a hotel with good facilities and be ready to swap a beach day for Stone Town, a spa or a drive around the island.

Zanzibar after a January or New Year Kilimanjaro

The New Year combination is especially popular: the summit first, then the ocean. It has to be booked earlier than usual, because international flights, internal flights and the popular hotels all get more expensive at the same time.

Margin after the mountain matters in the costing. If you came down on schedule, the extra night becomes a rest. If the programme slipped, it protects the rest of the route.

Stone Town

It helps to treat the historic centre not as an add-on to the beach but as a part of the journey in its own right. The narrow streets, the carved doors, the markets and the waterfront show the island’s layered history, tied to Africa, Arabia, India and the Indian Ocean.

One night is usually enough for a first look, but staying in Stone Town for a whole beach holiday only makes sense if the town matters more to you. The narrow streets call for comfortable shoes, and clothing should respect local cultural norms.

The sea, diving and excursions

Boat trips, snorkelling and diving all depend on the wind, the swell and the visibility. The marine operator confirms whether a trip goes out. No particular animal and no perfect water clarity can be guaranteed.

After altitude, how you feel and any medical limitations both matter. Diving immediately after a hard climb and before a flight needs planning of its own with a certified centre, and the safety intervals have to be respected.

A safari before the island

If your leave allows, you can put a safari in Tanzania between the mountain and Zanzibar. The journey then unfolds as three different chapters: the climb, the savannah and the ocean.

A safari adds more travelling, which makes a recovery day particularly useful. Do not try to squeeze the Serengeti and the island into two free days: the route loses its point and becomes hostage to every delay.

Zanzibar with children

For a family we check how deep the water is at the entry, the tides, whether there are family rooms, the catering, the transfers and the medical facilities. A long boat trip can be worse than a quiet day at the hotel, especially straight after the active part of the journey.

If a child took part in the climb, there is no need to keep up a competitive schedule on the island. The point is recovery, not the maximum number of excursions.

What to pack separately for the island

It is convenient to pack a small bag in advance with light clothing, swimming things and sandals, so that you do not have to unpack the whole mountain duffel. You will need SPF 50 cream, a hat, insect repellent, light covering clothing, a reusable bottle and a waterproof case for your phone.

Mountain equipment can stay in the main luggage, but documents, medicines and electronics always stay in your hand luggage. Check the rules for carrying trekking poles and other equipment with the internal airline.

Health and documents

Entry requirements depend on your nationality, your route and the countries you transit. The yellow fever certificate requirement is checked separately. Insurance has to be valid to the last day on the island.

Zanzibar is in a malaria risk area. Prophylaxis is chosen with a doctor. The main principles are gathered in our article on malaria when travelling.

Hotel, bungalow or small lodge

A large resort is convenient for its facilities, its several restaurants and its pool, but it can be a long way from local life. A small hotel closer to the beach gives you more quiet, though it may have no generator, no doctor and no round-the-clock kitchen. A bungalow on the front looks romantic, but the soundproofing and the air conditioning need checking.

After a climb, a good mattress, hot water, air conditioning and somewhere to eat in peace all matter especially. The category of room cannot be judged by stars alone: the costing records the specific property, the room type, the catering and the cancellation terms.

Eating after the mountain

Half board suits people who want to relax at the hotel and not go looking for a restaurant every evening. Breakfast only gives you the freedom to explore the island, though in a remote area the choice nearby may be limited. All-inclusive makes sense for a quiet beach holiday, but there is no point paying for it if most of your days are taken up with excursions.

Allergies and strict diets are notified before booking. One suitable dish on a menu is not a full catering plan for a week. Drinking water is either bottled or provided by the hotel.

Connectivity, electricity and remote work

The internet on the island is improving, but the speed depends on the area, the hotel and the weather. If you need to hold video calls after the climb, that is a criterion in its own right when choosing, not a standard feature of a room. A local SIM card and a power bank are both useful.

Short power cuts are possible. For medical equipment and for critical work, check the generator, the sockets and a backup means of communication in advance.

When to confirm the hotel and the flight

Over New Year, at Christmas, in July and August and during the school holidays, the best options for location and price go first. Confirm the mountain programme and a realistic arrival day on the island first, and only then take a non-refundable rate.

If the dates of the climb might still move, choose amendable accommodation or build in a night on the mainland. Saving money on an inflexible rate does not justify risking the whole island package.

What we do not promise

We cannot guarantee an absence of rain, a perfect ocean, a particular tide level or an encounter with dolphins. What we confirm is what can be managed: the hotel, the room, the catering, the transfer, the ticket and an agreed excursion.

Photographs show an area and a property, but they do not replace the name of the room category. Anything that matters to your decision to buy has to be included in the written confirmation.

What affects the costing of the stay

The season and any holiday dates

The area of the island

The category of hotel and the meal plan

The number of participants and their ages

Internal flights and baggage

Private or shared transfers

Stone Town, excursions and activities at sea

The cancellation and amendment terms

We confirm only the specific hotel, the room category, the catering, the transfers and the flights. The weather, the tides and the visibility in the sea are not a guaranteed service.

How to organise
