Climbing Elbrus is not only a physical test but a deep emotional experience, an immersion in the remarkable landscapes of the Caucasus. And of course, when planning a journey on that scale, every traveller faces one important question: “What does it cost to climb Elbrus?”

We have already published what is probably the fullest account of what Elbrus costs, and not only in money, in an article named exactly that: “The price of Elbrus“.

The cost of climbing Elbrus: the main factors

What it costs to climb Elbrus depends on a great many things: the route you choose, the logistics, equipment hire, guiding, accommodation and food. Let us take each of these in turn, so that you can see what actually makes up the price of the expedition.

1. The route you choose and how it affects the price

Elbrus can be climbed from the south side or the north side, and the price depends on that choice too. The south route is the more popular one and has a cable car, which makes it less demanding technically. Accordingly, the price of an ascent by the south route can range from 80,000 to 150,000 roubles, depending on the level of service and on how many days you plan to spend on the route.

The north route is wilder and demands more of you in fitness and in self-reliance. The price for this route can be higher because there is no cable car and because logistical support has to be laid on, which makes it dearer: in the range of 100,000 to 180,000 roubles.

2. Guiding: how the price varies with experience

On an Elbrus climb, what the guides cost also makes a significant difference. An experienced guide reduces the risk and improves the decisions taken on the route, gives you confidence on the route and means every detail of it is explained in full. Guiding fees can start at 40,000 roubles per person in a group and reach 150,000 roubles for one-to-one guiding. The more experienced the guide and the smaller the group, the higher the cost.

3. Hiring equipment and clothing

The price of a successful and comfortable ascent of Elbrus, or of trekking in the Elbrus region also covers equipment hire if you do not have your own. The kit you need includes mountaineering boots, crampons, ice axes, trekking poles and warm clothing. Hire can cost from 10,000 to 20,000 roubles depending on the quality and the number of items.

4. Accommodation and food

Prices for accommodation while you prepare for the climb, and at the intermediate stages of the route, also vary. On Elbrus you can stay in tented camps, in huts or in hotels. Depending on the level of comfort, accommodation can range from 1,500 to 10,000 roubles a night.

Food on the route affects the overall budget as well. Operators usually include meals in the price, at about 1,000-2,500 roubles a day. That covers both meals in the huts and the food cooked in camp.

5. Extras and additional costs

Do not forget the extra costs, which can include taking out insurance (about
2,000-5,000 roubles), the transfer to the start of the route (the price of a transfer in the Elbrus region varies with the distance, from 2,000 to 10,000 roubles), and cable-car tickets, at roughly 1,000-2,500 roubles per ride.

6. Group tours or private climbs?

What Elbrus costs also depends heavily on the format of the climb. Group tours are generally more affordable, because the cost of the guides and the logistics is shared between several people. A group tour on Elbrus usually comes to between 80,000 and 130,000 roubles with all the main services included. Private climbs cost more, but they give you complete control over the schedule and the route, and the price can reach 200,000 roubles or more.

How to choose the right option: ways to save

If you want to bring the cost of an Elbrus climb down, there are several ways to save. First, choose your dates carefully. At the height of the season, in July and August, prices for Elbrus can be higher because demand is strong. Planning the climb for June or September can save you money.

It is also worth considering joining a group expedition. That not only brings the price of the climb down but also creates the pleasant atmosphere of a shared adventure. Do take the operator’s experience and the company’s reputation into account: prices vary, but safety is not worth risking to save money.

Why it pays to invest in a well-run climb

Many people ask whether the high price of an Elbrus climb is worth it. The answer depends on your own approach to safety, to comfort and to the experience as a whole. A properly organised climb with professional guides, good equipment and well-thought-out logistics greatly increases your chances of reaching the summit. The price of a climb like that may look high, but money spent on safety and comfort is always money well spent, particularly in the mountains.

What it costs to climb Elbrus depends on many things: the route, the guiding, equipment hire, the format of the climb and the level of comfort. Climbing this magnificent peak can cost anything from 80,000 to 200,000 roubles, and it is worth remembering that safety and comfort have a price. Budgeting properly and choosing your operator carefully are the key to a successful ascent.

If you dream of climbing Elbrus, do not be put off by the cost: the experience will stay with you for life, and the price is only an investment in your dreams.

Related: all Elbrus routes and programmes – the classic programme from the south.

Elbrus is the highest peak in Russia and in Europe, and it has a magnetism of its own that draws mountaineers from all over the world.
