For a first ascent most people choose the summer season, when the logistics are more dependable and the regular group programmes are running.<\/strong> That does not mean guaranteed weather: snow, strong wind and sub-zero temperatures are possible in any month.<\/p>\n Summer dates offer a wider choice of groups and are more predictable in terms of infrastructure. Snow conditions change as the season progresses, so the same calendar date in different years is no promise of the same route.<\/p>\n The shoulder seasons attract fewer people, but the weather window can be narrower, and whether the cable cars and the huts are operating has to be checked separately. This choice is best made after discussing a specific programme.<\/p>\n A winter ascent is a challenge in its own right, with harsher cold, more wind, short daylight hours and higher demands on experience. It cannot be judged as an ordinary summer programme done in warmer clothing.<\/p>\n Look at your own level of preparation, your reserve days, the group format and confirmed infrastructure. A forecast helps you make a decision before setting out, but it does not choose the season for you and it does not guarantee the summit.<\/p>\n Even within the main season, conditions change from one week to the next: fresh snow, ice and wind all affect your pace and what your equipment has to cope with.
