The Manaslu Circuit is a remote lodge trek through the Budhi Gandaki valley and over the Larke La. It is not an approach to a base camp and it is not an ascent of an eight-thousander.<\/strong> People choose it for a long journey through a whole series of natural zones, for villages with a Tibetan cultural influence, and for markedly fewer trekkers than you meet on the classic Everest and Annapurna trails.<\/p>\n

The Manaslu Circuit trekking programme<\/a> climbs alongside the Budhi Gandaki, through forested gorges, to Samagaon and Samdo. The high part of the route ends with an early crossing of the Larke La, followed by a long descent to Bimtang. It is the order in which you sleep at each altitude, rather than the highest figure in the description, that determines how well you acclimatise.<\/p>\n

How the circuit differs from Manaslu Base Camp<\/h2>\n

The circuit trek goes round the massif and links two valleys. Base Camp can be the objective of a separate side trip from Samagaon, but it is not a compulsory end point of the published programme. Climbing Manaslu is an entirely different undertaking, with a glacier, high camps, fixed ropes and expedition-level selection.<\/p>\n

That distinction matters when you book: the word “Manaslu” does not make the three formats interchangeable. The trek asks for no technical mountaineering experience, but it does ask for endurance, sure footing on uneven trail and a willingness to spend several days living in simple mountain lodges.<\/p>\n

The big day: the Larke La<\/h2>\n

At 5160 m, the Larke La is the physical and meteorological high point of the circuit. You set off early, and after the climb there is a long descent still to come. Snow, ice, wind and poor visibility can slow the group down or make the crossing unsafe. The decision about when to start, what pace to hold and when to turn back belongs to the guide, and is made on the conditions of the day.<\/p>\n

The fact that there is a trail and there are lodges does not mean you can walk the pass day without preparing for it. Regular aerobic training helps, as do long walks with height gain and experience of several walking days back to back. Break your boots in beforehand, and get your knees ready for the long descent as well as the climb.<\/p>\n

Acclimatisation and how you feel<\/h2>\n

The extra night at Samagaon is not a sightseeing pause. A side trip that returns you to the same sleeping altitude lets you gauge how your body is responding before Samdo, Larke Phedi and the pass. Rushing this part to fit a shorter holiday is not an option.<\/p>\n

Headache, nausea, unusual weakness, dizziness and loss of coordination all need to be reported to the guide immediately. Going on gaining height while symptoms are getting worse is dangerous. Living conditions and remoteness<\/h2>\n

The route uses lodges, but they are not all of the same standard. The higher the village, the less choice there is of rooms, food and services. A hot shower, charging and a phone signal may be unavailable or charged for separately. You need a head torch, a power bank, waterproofing for your kit and enough clothing for several days without your usual shower.<\/p>\n

Remoteness is both the attraction of Manaslu and its constraint. There is less commercial infrastructure here, but a delay on the road or a change in the weather is correspondingly harder to absorb. Do not book an international flight for immediately after you are due out of the mountains.<\/p>\n
