But a family trip has to take account of the children’s ages, the adults’ interests, the school calendar and very different tolerances for effort. A certificate that leaves the format open is safer than a tour on a fixed date.

Who the gift belongs to

Decide at the outset: is the certificate made out to one adult, to two participants, or for a total amount? Check whether children can be added, whether the face value can be split and whether it can be passed to another member of the family.

A family with children

Do not choose a high-altitude climb as a universal family adventure. Walks, safaris and trips with short stages and time to rest all work. Age limits and accommodation are checked against the particular programme.

If interests differ

One person may want mountains, another comfort. Look for a route with several activities, or give an open face value. Doing something together does not require the same effort from everyone every day.

Budget

Work out the full cost for the size of the family: accommodation, flights, insurance, meals, transfers and supplements. If the face value covers only a small part of an expensive tour, say so honestly.

Dates

School holidays and annual leave push demand up. Do not fix a date without agreeing it, and do not buy non-refundable tickets. Check the validity period and the rules for moving a certificate.

Documents and health

Passports, visas and medical decisions remain the participants’ responsibility. The person giving the gift does not pass on children’s or adults’ data without consent. If the programme involves altitude, the family discusses it with a doctor and the organiser themselves.

How to hand it over

Add a map or a letter with several options, but leave them free to choose a quiet holiday. An electronic certificate is convenient at a distance, a printed one for a family celebration; confirm delivery times in advance.

The terms are published on the page of gift certificates. To choose, use the Mountain Guide catalogue.

A gift from relatives. Appoint one buyer and keep the payment confirmation. Do not collect the family’s passport details in a shared chat. A minimum of information is enough for the gift itself; the participants pass on the rest themselves.

Accommodation. A family room, extra beds and a child’s meals are all confirmed before booking. The phrase “twin accommodation” does not describe a family of three or four. Supplements should be clear in advance.

If plans change. A child’s illness, the school calendar and visa delays are all real. The rules on rescheduling matter more than the wrapping. Keep the terms and do not promise a refund that is not in the contract.

A large family. The number of seats in a transfer and the types of room available are limited. For several children, make the enquiry before choosing a date. The price on one participant’s card is not the total for the family.

Older relatives. Do not decide what effort is acceptable on the basis of age. Offer a comfortable option and a consultation, and leave the medical decision to the person and their doctor. A family should not lean on someone with the idea of a shared trip.

An alternative to a trip. If a shared holiday is impossible, the certificate can be used later or for separate trips, but only if the terms allow it. Check that in writing before buying.

Checking a family gift before you buy

Start by settling who is travelling: how many adults and children, the children’s ages on the date of the tour, whether separate accommodation may be needed and how long the trip can be. That information affects transport, rooms, meals and the choice of route. A certificate with a handsome round figure on it does not remove the need for a quotation covering the whole family.

Then check the calendar. School holidays, passport validity and the adults’ leave all have to overlap with the real dates of the programme. If the dates are not known yet, it is safer to give a face value and the right to choose than a non-refundable booking. The rules on rescheduling and refunds are read before payment.

Finally, discuss the effort with the people receiving the gift. A format that suits one member of the family may not suit another. Being able to choose a quieter programme, split the party or postpone the trip is what makes a gift a family one in substance, rather than only in the words on the envelope.

Gift certificates

A gift certificate for a journey

A designer gift certificate for a journey

For a family that has everything, time together is a more useful gift than another shared object.
