Insurance terms often place separate limits on mountaineering, on altitude, on travel across a glacier, on ski touring, on skiing off piste and on search and rescue.

The name of the product is no substitute for reading the terms. Before paying, match the wording of the policy against the specific programme: the route, the maximum altitude, the way you will be moving and the evacuation that might be needed.

The classic climb from the south and a ski tour, for instance, take place in the same area but need to be described differently in the insurance documents.

The activity covered

What you are going to do has to be explicitly permitted by the policy. For the classic climb, general cover for “active leisure” is not enough if the terms exclude mountaineering or the use of technical equipment.

For a ski tour, check ski mountaineering and travel away from prepared pistes as well. A policy that suits a summer climb does not necessarily suit a ski programme.

Maximum altitude

The western summit of Elbrus stands at 5642 m. The limit in the policy has to cover that altitude, not only the area around the hotel or the cable car. Wording that says “up to 5000 m” is not enough for a summit attempt.

Check the terms and the certificate rather than the marketing page. If the altitude limit is given as a range, or requires a separate option, that has to appear in the documents you are issued.

Where the cover applies

An ordinary programme needs cover for Russia and the Elbrus region. For a combined Kazbek and Elbrus trip the policy has to be valid in Georgia as well as in Russia, including the days spent travelling overland.

Check also whether there are exclusions for remote districts, border zones or events connected with official restrictions. Territory described as “worldwide” sometimes carries further qualifications in the terms.

Search and rescue

Medical treatment after an evacuation and the search and rescue itself are separate costs. You need to find cover in the policy specifically for the search, for the rescuers’ work and for transport out of the mountain zone.

Establish:

Who is able to call out a search and rescue operation

Whether it has to be agreed in advance with the assistance provider

Whether search and rescue carries a separate limit

Whether evacuation by land and by air are both covered

Whether the insurer pays the providers directly or reimburses you afterwards

Evacuation and medical care

The policy should describe getting a casualty off the route, first aid, hospital treatment and onward transport. Medical repatriation is a separate matter, and applies if a participant cannot return on a scheduled flight.

A clause in the policy about helicopter evacuation is no guarantee that one will take place. Whether it can happen depends on the weather, the location, the aircraft and the decision of the services. Insurance governs who pays for an operation that is possible; it does not make the flight technically possible.

Exclusions

Even a policy with the right name may still not pay out if its terms have been broken. Common limitations involve alcohol, undeclared chronic conditions, unauthorised changes to the route, the absence of a required permit, or a failure to follow safety instructions.

Do not conceal a diagnosis, and do not assume a guide can confirm to an insurer conditions that did not exist. If a clause is unclear, ask the insurance company for an answer in writing before the trip.

How the assistance service works

The insurance company and the assistance service may be different organisations. A participant needs the policy number, a telephone line staffed round the clock, a clear procedure for making contact, and access to copies of the documents without an internet connection.

Keep the policy and its terms on your phone

Put a paper copy in a waterproof bag

Give the policy number to someone at home

Save the assistance contact somewhere other than your email

Establish which documents a claim will require

Where to look at a specialist option

The Mountain Guide site has a separate page about insurance for mountaineers. Programme pages also show the partner Save Pro Life (SPL), which explains how to choose insurance for mountain climbs.

A partner link does not relieve a participant of the duty to check their own policy. Terms and limits change, and the option that suits you depends on your nationality, the route and the activity.

The checklist

Mountaineering or ski mountaineering is explicitly permitted

An altitude of 5642 m is inside the cover

Every country on the route is named

Search, rescue and evacuation have not been replaced by treatment alone

The procedure for reaching the assistance service is clear

The key exclusions have been read before payment

If the programme allows for reserve days or a second attempt, check that the policy’s period of cover runs past the last day of the programme with a margin to spare. How attempts work is set out in the article “Summit attempts on Elbrus”.

In short

Good insurance for Elbrus is defined not by a logo or by the word “sport” but by how far its terms match the actual route. Check the activity, the altitude, the territory, search and rescue, evacuation and the exclusions, and get anything unclear confirmed in writing.

Confirm the details of the programme you have chosen before taking out a policy.
