Equipment for Orizaba has to work throughout the nine-day programme: from the first ascents at 3900 and 4680 m to the overnight at 4000 m, Iztacc\u00edhuatl at 5230 m and the snow and ice sections of Orizaba at 5636 m. The main mistake is to buy a formally complete set and put it together for the first time at base camp.<\/p>\n

Boots<\/h2>\n

The final ascent calls for broken-in mountaineering boots that are compatible with the crampons you have chosen. Compatibility is checked physically, not by the name of a category in an online shop. The crampon must not come off when the boot twists, and the binding must not loosen after a few minutes of walking.<\/p>\n

Separate trekking boots may be used on the lower ascents. The particular choice is determined by the current list and by the state of the routes.<\/p>\n

Crampons and ice axe<\/h2>\n

A participant has to be able to put crampons on in the cold, check the binding and walk in them without catching a trouser leg or the other foot. The ice axe is chosen for its purpose and used as the guide instructs. Having the item on your rucksack is not a skill.<\/p>\n

Before the trip it is worth practising on suitable ground with an instructor: moving up, down and across, turning, where the ice axe is held and what to do if you lose your balance.<\/p>\n

Helmet and harness<\/h2>\n

The helmet has to adjust over a hat and must not block your view. The harness is fitted over the layers it will be used with. The set of karabiners and other components is agreed with the organiser: it cannot be put together from somebody else’s list for a different mountain.<\/p>\n

Clothing in layers<\/h2>\n

One very warm layer is no substitute for a system. You need a base layer, insulation, and protection from wind and precipitation, and you have to be able to change them as you go. It can be warmer on the lower volcanoes and colder and windier on Orizaba. Your clothing has to let you avoid overheating on the way up and add warmth quickly at a stop.<\/p>\n

Gloves are checked separately. Thin ones make it easy to work with buckles and karabiners; warm outer ones protect you on a cold section. Both have to fit into the same sleeve system.<\/p>\n

Eye protection and sun protection<\/h2>\n

Ultraviolet exposure increases at altitude and on snow. You need mountain sunglasses, a spare pair, and protection for the skin and the lips. Test the glasses together with your hat, hood and helmet, so that they neither fog up nor press.<\/p>\n

Head torch, water and rucksack<\/h2>\n

A head torch has to switch on reliably in gloves and to have spare power. The rucksack takes water, insulation, a personal first-aid kit, food, the technical set and whatever the guide specifies. Too small a rucksack forces you to strap critical items outside; one that is too large tempts you to take more than you need.<\/p>\n

The vacuum flask and the water containers are checked for leaks. Electronics and documents are protected from moisture and dust, and the power bank is kept warm.<\/p>\n

Sleeping bag and overnights<\/h2>\n

Whether a sleeping bag is needed, and what it has to do, depends on the confirmed form of accommodation. The card states accommodation without tents, yet tents are included in the group equipment. That is why a sleeping bag cannot be chosen from a single icon on the website: you need a written description of the overnight at 4200 m.<\/p>\n

The check<\/h2>\n

A few weeks before departure, assemble the complete set and do a long training session. Put on the layers, the helmet, the harness and the rucksack, walk with poles, test the torch and check that you can reach your water. Compare the result with the published programme<\/a>, not with a list for Elbrus, Aconcagua or some other expedition.<\/p>\n

The final list is issued for particular dates and for the state of the route. It takes precedence over this article.<\/p>\n

Personal and group equipment<\/h2>\n

The published price includes pots, gas, a stove, tents and a first-aid kit. That is the group set, not the participant’s complete kit. Personal boots, clothing, crampons, ice axe, helmet, harness, rucksack and other items are not included unless the documents for the particular departure say otherwise.<\/p>\n

A group first-aid kit does not remove the need for your own medicines and for medical information agreed in advance. The organiser should not have to guess what a participant takes regularly.<\/p>\n

Hiring or owning the set<\/h2>\n

Hiring can be sensible for expensive technical equipment, but only if the model, the size, the compatibility and the collection point are confirmed in advance. The items whose fit is critical \u2014 boots, gloves, harness \u2014 cannot be left to a chance choice on the last evening.<\/p>\n

If hire is available, ask for a separate list with prices and with the liability for damage. A service does not count as included merely because a local partner offers it.<\/p>\n

How to pack the set<\/h2>\n

In your hand luggage it is worth keeping documents, medicines, glasses, electronics and anything without which the programme could not begin. The airline’s rules on ice axes, poles, crampons, gas and other items are checked in advance. Gas usually cannot be carried in passenger baggage, but the final decision rests with the rules of the particular carrier and airport.<\/p>\n

Inside the rucksack, things are distributed so that insulation, gloves, water and the torch can be reached without unpacking everything. Dry bags make protection from precipitation and dust simpler.<\/p>\n

The check a week before the flight<\/h2>\n
