On the mountain sections of current Mountain Guide programmes you cannot count on mains electricity, Wi-Fi or regular mobile coverage. You charge your phone, watch, camera and power bank before the route starts and then protect them from cold and damp. A headlamp with spare batteries stays a separate piece of safety equipment rather than one more device competing for the shared power bank.<\/p>\n<p>The best solution starts not with buying the largest battery on the market but with cutting the number of devices and working out what you really consume. Decide what you need for communication and safety, what you use for photography and what can stay at the hotel. Then test the whole chain at home: device, cable, adapter, power bank and battery-saving mode.<\/p>\n<h2>The short answer: how to organise charging on Kilimanjaro<\/h2>\n<p>Before you go up on the mountain, charge every device fully, switch off apps you do not need and automatic updates, and save maps and documents offline. In the day pack, electronics are protected from rain and knocks. On cold stages, keep your phone and spare batteries closer to your body, but do not let condensation form. Personal electronics help you keep documents, take photographs, make notes and get in touch where there is a signal. They must not become a condition of your safety that collapses the moment one device goes flat.<\/p>\n<h2>What the Mountain Guide programmes actually confirm<\/h2>\n<p>On the mountain sections you cannot treat sockets, mains electricity, Wi-Fi or a stable mobile network as available. The signal depends on the camp, the operator, the weather and the state of the infrastructure. Even if your phone found a network on one section, that creates no promise of coverage at the next campsite or on summit day.<\/p>\n<p>The mandatory Mountain Guide list specifies a headlamp with spare batteries, a power bank and charging cables. You also charge your camera equipment before the route starts and keep it away from cold and damp. A solar panel, a generator or paid charging in camp are not listed as an included service, so you cannot build a plan around them being there.<\/p>\n<p>The programmes differ in length and in where you sleep. Marangu is run with accommodation in huts, while Lemosho, Machame and Rongai use tented camps. A hut does not mean a guaranteed socket. Choose your power plan by the number of days on the mountain, not by your usual assumptions about a type of building.<\/p>\n<p>Current programmes and their durations are on the page of <a href=\"https:\/\/mountainguides.pro\/kilimanjaro\/\">Kilimanjaro ascents<\/a>. Once you have chosen a route, count the full period from the last reliable charge in the hotel until you are back at a confirmed source of power.<\/p>\n<h2>Start by drawing up an energy budget<\/h2>\n<p>Everyone has their own set-up: one person shoots on a phone, another brings a camera and a watch, a third records a long track every day. That is why a universal number of milliamp-hours cannot give an honest answer. At the end of the day, note the percentage left. Several such trials tell you more than the manufacturer&#8217;s advertised figure, because they take in the age of the battery, your settings and your own habits.<\/p>\n<p>To the consumption you measure, add a reserve for cold, for reshooting, for delays and for unforeseen use. But that reserve must not turn into endlessly growing weight. If the sums demand several heavy power banks, the first things to reconsider are your shooting, the frequency of syncing and the number of devices.<\/p>\n<h2>How to choose a power bank without deceiving yourself<\/h2>\n<p>Capacity on the case is usually given in milliamp-hours, while aviation limits are set in watt-hours. For a lithium-ion battery, watt-hours are the capacity in amp-hours multiplied by the nominal voltage of the cell. On a certified power bank the Wh figure is normally printed alongside the other specifications. If the marking is rubbed off or missing, carrying it may raise questions.<\/p>\n<p>You cannot divide the capacity of a power bank in mAh by the capacity of your phone and treat the answer as a guaranteed number of charges. Internal voltage, conversion, the cable, the temperature and the phone working while it charges all create losses. Establish the real number of cycles by testing at home with the same cable and the same device.<\/p>\n<p>A big case is no guarantee of reliability. What you need is sound connectors, a clear indicator, short-circuit protection and no swelling or damage. A cheap battery with unknown markings is a hazard both on an aircraft and in a tent. Before the trip, check a full charge, a discharge, the speed and whether it can work with your chosen device at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>Several small units give you a reserve if one fails, but they increase the number of items and fall under limits on quantity. One large unit is easier to keep track of, but losing it costs you the whole supply. Make the decision after checking the airline&#8217;s current rules and your own energy budget.<\/p>\n<h2>Rules for flying with power banks and spare batteries<\/h2>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iata.org\/contentassets\/6fea26dd84d24b26a7a1fd5788561d6e\/passengers_travelling_with_lithium_batteries.pdf\">2026 IATA guidance for passengers travelling with lithium batteries<\/a>, power banks may be carried in hand luggage only, each one has to be protected against short circuit, and a passenger is limited to a maximum of two lithium-ion power banks of no more than 100 Wh each. That is an international industry benchmark, but an individual carrier or state may impose stricter conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Before every flight, check the rules of every airline on your ticket, including codeshare and domestic segments. Restrictions may cover using and charging a power bank in the cabin, where it has to be stowed, whether the marking is visible, and devices with a non-removable battery. One carrier&#8217;s permission does not automatically extend to another.<\/p>\n<p>Protect the contacts of spare batteries with individual bags, caps or tape as the carrier requires. Damaged, swollen, leaking or recalled batteries do not go on the trip at all. A power bank should not go into the porter&#8217;s duffel until the air travel is over, if it has to stay with the passenger.<\/p>\n<p>These rules were checked on 3 August 2026 and can change. Mountain Guide is not a substitute for an airline&#8217;s dangerous goods desk. If the capacity, the type or the marking leaves any doubt, obtain written confirmation from the carrier before the trip.<\/p>\n<h2>What cold does to a phone and to batteries<\/h2>\n<p>High on Kilimanjaro, cold reduces the performance available from lithium-ion batteries. A device may show a rapid discharge, shut down, or temporarily refuse to charge. Apple states directly that using an iPhone in a very cold environment can temporarily shorten battery life, and that performance returns once the phone is back at normal temperature. Look up the equivalent limits in the manual for your own device.<\/p>\n<p>Keep your phone and spare batteries in an inside pocket, closer to the body, but protected from sweat. At a halt, do not leave them on a rock, on a tent floor or in an outside pocket. Never warm a frozen device rapidly next to a flame. Let it come back to working temperature gradually in a dry place first.<\/p>\n<p>Condensation forms when cold equipment is brought into a warmer, damper environment. A sealed bag lets the device warm up gradually while the moisture settles on the outside of the packaging. Never plug a charger into a wet port. Check its condition before you connect it to a power bank.<\/p>\n<p>Keeping things warm does not mean permanently storing them inside your sleeping bag unprotected. A hard case can damage the fabric, and damp breath and condensation harm the connectors. For the night, choose a dry inside pocket or a protected pouch next to you.<\/p>\n<h2>Phone settings that save power<\/h2>\n<p>Before you set out, download offline maps, tickets, insurance details, contacts, copies of documents and any material you need. Then switch off automatic app updates, cloud photo syncing and background downloads. Set the screen to a moderate brightness and a short lock time. If you do not need to be reachable, use flight mode.<\/p>\n<p>Constantly searching for a weak network drains power even when no connection is made. You can check for a signal at an agreed time and then go back to battery-saving mode. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and a watch are switched off according to what they actually do, not mechanically. Bluetooth, for example, may be needed by a medical device, and GPS for your own track recording, so the decision is an individual one.<\/p>\n<p>Look through and select your photographs after the route. Long scrolling through the gallery, video editing and posting on social media all use the screen, the processor and the radio. Kilimanjaro should not turn into a daily editing studio. A few meaningful frames and a short piece of video preserve the story better than hundreds of near-identical takes that left the phone flat.<\/p>\n<p>Your phone should have a reliable passcode, and your important contacts and documents should have a backup you can reach without it. A paper card with emergency details is useful in case the phone goes flat or is damaged. Electronics support your organisation; they do not replace it.<\/p>\n<h2>Camera, watch and headlamp<\/h2>\n<p>A camera needs a plan of its own. Label your spare batteries, keep charged and discharged ones apart, and protect the contacts. Long video, stabilisation, reviewing shots and wireless transfer all use more power than selective still photography. Before the trip, decide which scenes you genuinely want and practise changing a battery with gloves on.<\/p>\n<p>A watch can record your track, your heart rate and your altitude, but not all of those functions matter equally. A permanently lit screen, frequent satellite recording and automatic syncing all cut the running time. Choose the mode from the manual and test it on a long training walk. The data from a watch does not replace an assessment of how you feel or the guide&#8217;s decision.<\/p>\n<p>A headlamp is critical for the summit push and for moving around at night. The Mountain Guide list explicitly specifies a supply of spare batteries. It must not depend on the power bank alone, on a single cable or on the built-in light on a phone. Keep the spares dry, protect the contacts and make sure the batteries are compatible with your particular model.<\/p>\n<p>Before you set out, check the brightness, the button lock and the charge remaining. Too much light drains the battery quickly and bothers the people around you. Establish your working brightness on a night training walk and keep the maximum setting for brief moments when you really need it.<\/p>\n<h2>Cables, connectors and keeping water out<\/h2>\n<p>One wrong cable makes a large reserve of power useless. For each device, check the connector, the power it needs and whether it will charge from the power bank you have chosen. Label your cables and take a sensible spare for anything critical. Test adapters at home as part of the whole chain.<\/p>\n<p>Electronics are kept in sealed bags or pouches and not mixed in with wet clothing. It is worth putting a dry cloth inside for wiping things down. Close the bag before the rain, not after the first drops. A camera on a strap or a phone in an outside pocket needs a quick plan for protecting it.<\/p>\n<p>Charge on a stable, dry surface. The cable is not stretched across a walkway, and the power bank is not left under heavy items or covered up in a way that would hide it overheating. Any device, connector or battery that smells, gets very hot, is damaged or is swollen goes out of use immediately.<\/p>\n<p>A solar panel cannot be treated as a universal answer. Its output depends on its area, the cloud, the angle, how long you stop and its compatibility with your battery. It is not stated as an included service on the current programmes. If you want to carry your own panel, its weight, its mounting and its acceptability for air travel are all assessed separately, after a real-world test.<\/p>\n<h2>Three scenarios: minimal, photographic and working<\/h2>\n<p>The minimal scenario suits someone who needs a phone, a watch and a headlamp. The phone spends most of its time in flight mode and is used for a few photographs, some notes and the occasional attempt to get in touch. The watch records a track in a battery-saving mode, and the headlamp has its own supply of batteries. For a set-up like this the key is not surplus capacity but a sound power bank, plus one main and one spare cable for anything critical.<\/p>\n<p>The photographic scenario adds a camera, spare batteries and heavier use of the phone. Here the savings come not from giving up on pictures but from an editorial plan: decide the key scenes in advance, limit long video, do not review every take and do not transfer large files in camp. Number the batteries and mark off the used ones in the evening. Keep the camera accessible, otherwise you will end up shooting only on the phone and draining its emergency reserve at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>The working scenario, in which someone intends to make calls every day, send files or hold meetings, cannot be considered dependable. Mountain Guide programmes do not promise regular coverage or Wi-Fi. Even a large reserve of power does not create a network. Urgent work is better finished before the mountain; tell colleagues the period when you will be out of reach, and leave an emergency contact with the office. You choose your own purpose, test it and accept the weight of the system knowingly. If the roles are mixed, base the calculation on the more demanding one, but safety equipment still gets first priority.<\/p>\n<h2>A trial run before the trip<\/h2>\n<p>Two or three weeks before your flight, do a self-sufficient rehearsal lasting several days. Every device runs in its chosen mode, no socket is used, and consumption is written down each evening. The test reveals a weak cable, a superfluous device and the real number of charges better than any online calculator.<\/p>\n<p>During the rehearsal, repeat the evening routine as well. Devices are laid out on a dry, stable surface, charged batteries are kept apart from discharged ones, and the power bank is not left plugged in and unattended all night. In the morning, note the power remaining and check whether any was lost to a forgotten screen, a sync or a poor cable. That is how you find the organisational losses as well as the technical ones.<\/p>\n<p>Model the cold separately: without putting the devices anywhere dangerous, plan where each will sit on your body, at a halt and overnight. Test pockets, dry bags and short tethers with gloves on.
