It consists of climbing to both summits on one side of the mountain and descending on the opposite side. This is one of the most famous routes, which allows you to test your abilities before attempting higher peaks.

The “cross” of Elbrus can be climbed from north to south (more difficult) or from south to north. It is also possible to climb to the east summit of Elbrus and descend from there by three different routes – the Motorcycle Col (a Land Rover that was taken up there in 1997 is still there), along the rock of Elbrus Saddle (the western slope of the east summit of Elbrus) or on the south side (the easiest route).

We can recommend climbing the Elbrus “cross” as a training program for climbing Lenin Peak, Korjenevskoj Peak, Khan-Tengry, Island Peak, Mera Peak, Aconcagua and Ojos del Salado. It is possible to plan an overnight stay in tents on the Elbrus saddle.

9-day schedule of a guided climb of the South Elbrus Cross

To give you peace of mind, the packages we offer usually include all the expenses you may incur.

Day 1. Arrival at MRV Airport. In a single long day at altitude the group climbs the West summit, 5642 m, and the East summit, 5621 m, and then descends by the northern route.

Programme price — $2 160.

It differs from the ordinary south to north traverse in that both summits are climbed. It differs from the Two Summits of Elbrus programme in that after the summits the group does not return to the southern slope but continues north.

Acclimatisation begins on the southern side of Elbrus. Participants hike on the slope of Cheget to about 3000 m and to the observatory at 3100 m, move up to the high-mountain shelter at 3888 m and make acclimatisation hikes to about 4200 m and 4700 m. That sequence prepares them for a long stretch of work above 5000 m and for the more self-supported northern descent.

After the West and East summits the group spends the night in a shelter on the northern slope, then descends to Emmanuel Glade and transfers to Mineralnye Vody. The programme runs without tents: accommodation is in hotels and mountain shelters on both sides of Elbrus.

The route requires good physical preparation and the ability to hold a working pace through a long day at altitude. Previous high-altitude experience is desirable. After the first summit you have to keep enough strength to continue, to climb the second summit and to make the long descent to the north.

Groups are accompanied by Mountain Guide guides. The lead guide works with participants throughout the programme, and assistant guides join for summit day. The ratio is strict: no more than three participants to one guide. The sequence of the route is the West summit, the East summit and then the descent to the north; that order keeps the descent clear of the large crevasse zones of the northern slope. Whether the route can continue, and the final line taken, are decided by the lead guide according to the weather, the state of the slopes, the pace and how participants feel.

Important

Participants carry the food for the high-altitude section themselves. This is a standard feature of how ascents of Elbrus from the south are organised. The food travels up by cable car with the group and is moved onwards by snowcat; it only has to be carried by hand over short sections of no more than 20 m.

Completing both summits and continuing the descent to the north depend on the weather, the state of the route, the time available and the readiness of the group.

Reaching at least one of the two summits counts as a successful result of the programme.

Repeat group attempts within the days provided by the programme carry no extra charge. If part of the group reaches the summit, the ascent counts as completed and additional attempts for the remaining participants are paid separately.

The programme is designed for physically prepared participants; previous high-altitude experience is desirable.

[320,330,355

post-14917","product","type-product","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","product_cat-climbing","product_cat-climb-elbrus","product_cat-only-mount","first","instock","downloadable","shipping-taxable","purchasable","product-type-simple

<!--
