For Elbrus and Nepal, reliable locks, a comfortable grip and the ability to change length quickly matter more than any particular brand.

Length

On level ground the elbow is usually close to a right angle. Going up, the poles are shortened; on a long descent they are lengthened. That is a starting point: the terrain, your height and the way you move all call for small adjustments.

Two sections or three

Three-section models pack smaller, while two-section models can be simpler and stiffer. Check the minimum folded length and the carrier’s restrictions. A folding design has to fit into hold baggage; poles are not normally counted on as hand luggage without checking the rules.

Locks

An external lever lock is easy to watch and to tighten. An internal twist lock is more compact, but its condition is harder to see. Whichever system you use, it has to lock with gloves on and must not collapse under load.

Grip and wrist strap

Cork, foam and rubber all feel different in a wet or cold hand. Set the wrist strap so that the support comes through the wrist while the pole can still be released quickly. On potentially dangerous terrain the guide may ask you not to use the straps.

Tips and baskets

A carbide tip works on soil and rock, while a rubber cap protects flooring and baggage. Snow baskets reduce how far the pole sinks in, but they do not turn it into an ice axe and are not used for self-arrest.

Aluminium or carbon

Aluminium is usually heavier, but it takes isolated knocks better and may simply bend. Carbon is lighter and damps vibration, yet damage sometimes leads to a sudden break. For an expedition a reliable, familiar pair is worth more than the lowest possible weight.

Checks before the route

clean the sections and the locks;

set the length;

test the straps with gloves on;

take the right baskets;

practise going up and coming down;

do not hang the poles on the outside of the pack unsecured.

On the technical part of Elbrus the poles may give way to the ice axe. Check how they are used against the Elbrus programme or the route you have chosen in Nepal.

Step technique. Plant the pole beside your body rather than throwing it far ahead. On the descent both poles should not go too far below you at the same time: that overloads the shoulders and creates a false point of support. Practise the movement on a safe path.

Flying. Sharp tips and the overall length usually mean the poles go into hold baggage. Collapse the sections, protect the ends and secure the poles inside the bag. Check the rules of your particular airline before departure.

Repairs. Take a key or a screwdriver if the lock needs adjusting, plus a small amount of material for a temporary fix. A cracked carbon section cannot be taped back to full working load; a damaged pole is replaced.

Elbrus. On acclimatisation days the poles save energy, but on the snow and ice of the summit one hand is often working with the ice axe. Do not lash both poles to the rucksack in a way that lets them snag on the rope or on other people.

Nepal. On long descents the poles are particularly useful, but steps and narrow bridges call for stowing them or placing them more precisely. Do not get in the way of porters or animals, and give way on the side the local team indicates.

Buying. Check that spare tips and sections are available, what the warranty covers and what the pair actually weighs. An ultralight model is no bargain if the lock holds poorly or the grip rubs.

Checking the poles before the trip

Assemble both poles at home, set the working length and load them several times on a staircase and on a descent. The sections should not rotate or slowly collapse. Compare the markings on the right and the left pole, and check the straps, tips and baskets. Any play is better dealt with before you travel.

The setting depends on the terrain: going up, the poles are usually made shorter; going down, longer; and on a traverse the two lengths may differ. That is a guide, not a rigid formula. The wrist should stay in a natural position and the elbow should work without the shoulder rising constantly. Use the strap so that in a fall you can free your hand quickly.

Poles are no substitute for balance, suitable footwear and sound movement technique. On ice they are also no substitute for an ice axe and the skill to use it. If the route involves specialist equipment, ask the operator in advance when the poles are used and when they are stowed on the rucksack.

<!--
