The price you pay is not only extra days but a more demanding altitude profile, a long pass day and much greater dependence on snow and weather.

The programme via Gokyo and Cho La first follows the classic Khumbu valley to Base Camp and Kala Patthar, then heads through Dzongla to the pass and descends to the lakes. That order gives you acclimatisation before the pass, but it does not make the pass easy.

Who the Gokyo route is for

It appeals to people who want to see more than one valley and are ready for a full circuit. If your aim is simply to reach Everest Base Camp for the first time with the most straightforward logistics, the classic route is simpler. If your holiday is short, the abbreviated programme saves days on the way back, but it does not replace acclimatisation.

Gokyo is worth more than photographs of turquoise lakes. Gokyo Ri offers a different angle on Everest and its neighbouring eight-thousanders, and the path along the Ngozumpa glacier shows a less familiar side of the Khumbu. Cloud can close the panorama down, though, and no particular view can be guaranteed.

Why Cho La changes the difficulty of the whole trip

At 5420 m, Cho La is not a technical summit, but it is a high pass with snow, ice, rock and an early start. Conditions on it change through the season. A guide may require additional traction devices or alter the plan if moving becomes unsafe.

The commonest mistake is to think of the pass as a short obstacle between two beautiful valleys. In practice you need to keep enough in reserve for the whole crossing and the descent. Fitness here is measured not by how fast you go in the first few hours but by your ability to move steadily and attentively all the way to the lodge.

Acclimatisation and keeping an eye on how you feel

The route stays above 4000 m for several days and reaches 5645 m on Kala Patthar. Being fit is no protection against acute mountain sickness. If symptoms appear you must not gain more height without the guide’s decision, and getting worse at the same altitude may mean going down.

It helps to know in advance how your body reacts at 4000 m and above. If you have no such experience, talk to Mountain Guide about the classic version. The basic rules are set out in our article on altitude sickness and acclimatisation.

What is expected of you

Experience of several consecutive days on the trail

Confident movement over rock and possible snow

Readiness for a long day with an early start on the pass

The discipline to keep a slow pace and report symptoms

Time in hand in case the Lukla flights change

Technical climbing experience is not usually required, but footwear and any extra equipment for Cho La are confirmed before departure. You should never drop a recommended item from your kit on your own initiative.

Lodges and recovery

The group sleeps in lodges, but conditions in Gorak Shep, Dzongla and other high stops are basic. A hot shower, heating in the room, charging and internet are not guaranteed and may be charged for separately. What matters far more than the class of room is dry clothing, a warm sleeping bag and being able to recover after each stage.

Domestic flights to Lukla depend on the weather. The exact departure airport, baggage allowances and ground transfers are confirmed before departure. Plan your international ticket with a margin.

How to compare the four options

The classic programme concentrates on Base Camp and Kala Patthar. The VIP version changes the level of service but not the altitude. The short version cuts down the return logistics. Gokyo adds a pass and a second valley, and therefore demands the strongest trekking fitness of the four.

A full comparison is published in our article on which Everest trek to choose.

Where to go next

The trekking programme via Gokyo and Cho La

The Gokyo lakes and the Cho La pass

A comparison of all the Everest programmes

Frequently asked questions about Gokyo and Cho La

Can the route be walked without Cho La?

Changing the circuit is possible only at the guide’s discretion and where the logistics allow. A way round cannot be promised in advance as an equivalent substitute for the confirmed programme.

Are crampons needed?

That depends on the snow and ice. The guide confirms footwear and any additional equipment before departure; you should not leave it out on your own judgement.

Is Gokyo easier than the classic trek?

No. The route is longer and adds a high pass, so it normally calls for stronger trekking fitness.

The trek
