Summer on Elbrus is the climbing season, the trekking season and the chance to see the Elbrus region without winter skis, all at once. These formats call for very different preparation. The cable car and the well-developed infrastructure on the southern side make some places easier to reach, but they do not cancel out the altitude, the glaciers or the speed at which the weather turns.<\/p>\n

Climbing in summer<\/h2>\n

The classic route from the south uses the cable car and the high-mountain huts, then adds acclimatisation walks and a night start. The northern and western sides, and the traverses, differ in logistics and in how self-sufficient you have to be. Even in summer the summit remains a snow and ice objective requiring specialist equipment.<\/p>\n

The programmes are gathered in the Elbrus climbing<\/a> section. For a first attempt, judge a programme by the sequence of its acclimatisation, not by the smallest number of days.<\/p>\n

Trekking without the summit<\/h2>\n

The valleys and gorges let you build a trip of their own: walks to waterfalls, viewpoints and natural features, with a return to your hotel each evening. Which route you take depends on the state of the path, the weather and your experience. Never set off onto a glacier or a snow-covered section as though it were an ordinary walk.<\/p>\n

Where to stay<\/h2>\n

Terskol works well as a base, with shops and a choice of directions to head out in. Cheget and Azau tend to be chosen for particular activities. Before booking, check the address, the route to the meeting point, whether you can dry clothes, whether breakfast is included and whether late check-in is possible. The cheapest room rate does not always add up to the cheapest holiday.<\/p>\n

Summer weather and clothing<\/strong><\/p>\n

It can be warm in the valley and cold, windy and snowy higher up. You need layers, rain protection, sunglasses, a hat and well broken-in boots. Look at the forecast for the altitude you are heading to and refresh it before you set out. A clear morning is no guarantee of a full day without rain.<\/p>\n
