You are responsible for the acclimatisation, the forecast, the navigation, the equipment, the communications and the decision to turn round. If even one of those has to be learned on summit day itself, it is safer to take a guide or join a course.

What experience you need

confident movement in crampons on snow and hard ice;

self-arrest with an ice axe;

navigation in poor visibility;

judging the pace and the turnaround time;

recognising the symptoms of altitude sickness;

arranging communications and calling for help;

previous winter or high-altitude days out.

The south side is not made safe by its infrastructure

The classic south route is the easiest one logistically. But above the huts there is still glacier, cold, wind and lost visibility. Tracks can disappear after a snowfall, and a digital track does not show you the current state of the crevasses. A commercial group walking alongside you is under no obligation to look after an independent climber.

Acclimatisation

The cable car lifts you quickly; the body adapts more slowly. Plan several days with a gradual gain in height, training days out and recovery. Being in good physical shape helps you keep walking, but it is no guarantee of protection against acute altitude sickness.

Navigation and weather

Download offline maps and a track, take an independent power source, and decide on your checkpoints in advance. Compare the forecast at different altitudes, the wind speed and the cloud. If you lose visibility or fall behind schedule, the turnaround has to come before the situation becomes an emergency.

Registration and communications

Before you set off, register your route through the Russian Emergencies Ministry form, give someone close to you the plan and a control time, and save 112 and the contacts for the local rescue service. Registration does not mean anyone is watching over you, and it is no guarantee of a fast evacuation.

Insurance

Check whether the policy covers independent mountaineering, the altitude of 5642 m, search and rescue work, and evacuation. The word “sport” in a policy advertisement is not enough: what matters is the terms and the exclusions of the particular contract.

When you need a guide

Take a guide if you have no experience on glaciers, if you are using crampons for the first time, if you cannot navigate inside cloud, or if you are not ready to give up the summit on your own judgement. The formats currently running are gathered in the Elbrus climbing section. Look separately at the differences between the routes: an independent trip on the south side and a self-supported one on the north call for very different logistics.

Which route an independent group should choose

The south is chosen more often because of the infrastructure, but even here you have to work out the line of ascent and descent in advance. The north needs a more self-supported camp and a transport plan. The west side and the non-standard traverses are not suitable for a first independent attempt simply because they look shorter on the map. Every side has objective dangers of its own, and points beyond which retreating gets harder.

Before you travel, study not only the track but the alternatives: where you can safely lose height, which stations or huts are actually open, what to do if the cable car is closed, and who knows your plan. A downloaded route by an unknown author is no proof that it is current.

A minimum emergency plan

Write down who is in the group, any medical conditions and the emergency contacts. Nominate someone who stays below and raises the alarm once the control time has passed. Every person needs insulation, light and the ability to get down without handing the group’s only torch or phone to the leader.

Communications are built with a reserve: a charged phone, a power bank kept warm and agreed times to check in. A satellite device is only useful if the team knows how to use it and understands how a call for help works. A location fix does not replace a description of the casualty’s condition and of the weather.

Equipment, with no accidental compromises

Check the boots with the crampons, that the anti-balling plates work, the length of the ice axe, the head torch, the spare gloves and the face protection. The repair kit should match the equipment you actually have. Hired kit is collected with time in hand for an exchange, not on the evening before the start.

The turnaround time

It is set before you leave, and it is only ever adjusted to make the decision earlier. On the summit you are only halfway through the route: most incidents develop on the descent, on top of fatigue. Reasons to turn round can be a slow pace, lost visibility, cold, equipment failure or the condition of one person. A vote by the group does not cancel an objective risk.

A self-check before you buy the ticket

If you cannot confidently explain to a partner how to stop a slide, find the way inside cloud, warm someone up, call for help and organise a descent, then the independent format is premature. Do a practical course or a route with a guide first, and then come back to the idea with an emergency plan of your own.

Who is in the group. Going alone raises the consequences of any mistake. In an independent group the navigation, the first-aid kit, the repairs, the communications and the leadership are allocated in advance. If only one person knows the route or can handle the equipment, that is not a team with a reserve. Everyone should be able to help the leader, not just follow them.

The snowcat and the cable car. Whether they run depends on the weather and the timetable. An independent plan must not collapse when a lift is cancelled or the cable car closes. Check the last uplift, how to pay and what the alternative descent is, but do not treat the infrastructure as an emergency service.

After you get back. Close your registration, tell your contact that you are down, and go through where you departed from the plan. Write down the actual times and any problems with clothing and navigation. That kind of review tells you more about your readiness for the next route than the summit itself does.

For comparison with the independent format: look at how the nine-day programme for climbing Elbrus from the south works: the acclimatisation, the guiding and the
