This is normally where the organised Mountain Guide transfer to the Elbrus region begins. Nalchik is geographically closer to Terskol, but the choice of flights and the convenience of connections have to be checked for your particular date. So the question is better framed not only as &#8220;which airport is closest to Elbrus&#8221; but also as &#8220;which airport does the programme collect the group from&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This article answers the logistical question only: where to fly to, how to get to Terskol and Azau, how much time to leave for baggage, and what to do if your flight is delayed. If the programme starts with a meet-up in Mineralnye Vody, flying to Nalchik turns a small saving on the road into a task of its own: you then have to arrange your own onward journey and reach the accommodation by the agreed time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vladikavkaz, Stavropol and other airports<\/strong> can be considered as fallbacks when the route network is awkward or flights are cancelled. It lies higher up the valley and is not a synonym for Terskol, even if the two names are sometimes used interchangeably in conversation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cheget<\/strong> is a separate area next to Terskol. It may be where you stay or where a walk begins, but it is not a cable car station on Elbrus itself.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The northern side of Elbrus<\/strong> means different logistics. The transfer goes neither to Terskol nor to Azau, but to the point set out in the northern route programme.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One line in your booking request prevents the mistake: the name of the programme, the start date, the flight number and where you are staying. &#8220;To Elbrus&#8221; is not enough for a driver, because an unnecessary extra leg between points is particularly unwelcome after a flight with a lot of mountain baggage.<\/p>\n<h2>How long the drive from Mineralnye Vody to the Elbrus region takes<\/h2>\n<p>The drive takes several hours. The exact time cannot be guaranteed in advance: it depends on the final hotel, the group&#8217;s stops, roadworks, the weather and traffic. When planning, work not from the minimum time your satnav gives but from the whole journey, from touchdown to checking in.<\/p>\n<p>After landing you have to wait for your baggage, leave the terminal, find the representative or driver and load rucksacks and cases into the vehicle. Group transport may be collecting people off several flights, so it leaves at a set time. There may be a comfort stop on the way. A private ascent, a helicopter format, an independent arrival, a ski package or a combined route starting in another country may have different terms. Once you have booked, send the manager the participant&#8217;s first name and surname, the flight number, the departure city, the date and time of arrival and a contact phone number, and tell them about any large or unusual baggage. If the ticket has several segments, what matters for the pick-up is the last flight, the one that lands at Mineralnye Vody.<\/p>\n<p>A screenshot of the itinerary receipt is useful, but it does not replace a short text message: on an image it is easy to miss the local time, the date after an overnight connection or a change of airport. Baggage of that kind is sometimes accepted at a separate desk and delivered away from the main carousel. Its drawback is that the cost is not split across the whole group.<\/p>\n<p>An ordinary town taxi is not always suitable for a long mountain drive. Before booking, confirm the final address, the size of the boot, whether outsize equipment can be carried and the final price. For someone on a climbing programme, though, the car often sits idle for most of the trip. Before hiring, check the restrictions in the agreement, parking at your accommodation, the return terms and whether the driver is genuinely up to several hours at the wheel after a flight.<\/p>\n<p>Public transport is possible as a combination of intercity buses, minibuses and changes, but timetables shift and rarely line up with the start of a group programme. That route makes more sense for independent travel with time in hand and light baggage than for arriving at a fixed briefing.<\/p>\n<h2>Can you come by train or in your own car<\/h2>\n<p>The train can be an alternative to flying if rail connections to the Caucasus Mineral Waters towns or to Nalchik suit you better. Do not book a return flight on the strength of a satnav time estimate alone. The descent, gathering the group, the weather and the road can all push your arrival at the airport later.<\/p>\n<p>For a climb, the reserve day matters especially. Cut it for the sake of an earlier ticket and you are effectively shortening the window for a summit attempt.
